It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2022 and look forward to the coming year ahead. New Year’s Eve celebrations typically center around the famous transition from one year to the next: midnight. But, let’s face it, most kids can’t hang until the ball drops—nor can some exhausted parents! We’ve rounded up the best kid-friendly events to help celebrate the upcoming year and many end by noon! Whether you’re looking for a simple mid-day balloon drop or an elegant, over-the-top kid-only ball, we rounded up more than 30 epic ways to spend New Year’s Eve in the DMV.

Metrobar's First New Year's Eve Party
Let the littles have some New Year's fun while still getting them in to bed on time! There will be kid-friendly activities and games and plenty of sparkling "c" for everyone (that's champagne for the over 21 crowd and good ol' fashioned cider for the under crowd). This outdoor bar keeps everyone toasty with campfires, patio heaters and hot chocolate. The ball drops at 7 p.m. so you can tuck the kids in by 8!.

Watch Night Falls Church
This family-friendly event is totally free (including parking); there are even free shuttles that run every 20 minutes from East Falls Church Metro so that you and your littles can take part in this town's annual festivities without spending a dime. GrandFun Alley features rock climbing, bungee jumps an inflatable obstacle course (and more!) for action-packed fun. Live entertainment includes swing music from Big Band Northern Lights Orchestra and kid-friendly shows include a puppet performance and balloon artistry.

First Night Alexandria
Alexandria's annual event includes all-day entertainment featuring rising stars along seasoned performers. Hosted by the African American History and Culture Museum, this virtual concert features musical prodigy Matthew Whitaker performing live. There will be a discussion of the significance of Watch Night as well as a non-denominational blessing. Reservations are encouraged for this performance. It will also be available on demand through Jan. 31.

Midnight Noon 
Rock out to science-themed pop tunes at The Maryland Science Center's annual NYE event. This popular B'more tradition gives kids the opportunity to see the ball drop before bedtime while dancing to the pithy sounds of Marsha and the Positrons. There will be fun New Year’s festivities throughout the day plus the chance to explore three-levels of hands-on science exhibits.

1. Del Mar Snow n Glow

The Del Mar Fairgrounds has transformed into a winter wonderland making this a most-fun new years eve San Diego event! Enjoy the last day of 2022 by huddling with your loved ones in a private igloo, snow tubing down Snow Hill (with real snow!), or sipping hot chocolate while strolling through a million festive lights. A fantastic way to ring your new year in style and be home before bedtime! Event details.

2. Temecula's NYE Grape Drop

The infamous Grape Drop in Temecula is a treat for the whole brood. Catering to families, they celebrate twice with an East Coast (9 p.m.) and West Coast (midnight) countdown. The New Year’s Eve Grape Drop will include live music, food vendors, and kid’s activities. Free Fun Zone will be open from 6-10 pm. Event details.

3. Northern Lights at the California Center for the Arts

Cap off the holiday season by visiting Northern Lights at California Center for the Arts. Their 12-acre campus transforms into a spectacle of light, hope, and joy after sunset each evening. Guests are invited to wander along the walkways, taking in the holiday sights and sounds. The young and young-at-heart will enjoy tunnels of twinkling lights, giant LED Christmas trees and blow-up figurines of favorite holiday characters. Spend the last day of the year strolling around the Zoo & Safari Park at night under the sights & sounds of holiday cheer. Willie Mays Statue | San Francisco

Are you a baseball family? A trip to Oracle Park is sure to please as the park boasts a statue of one of the most well-known baseball players: Willie Mays. Mays spent most of his 22-season Major League Baseball career playing for the San Francisco Giants. Learn about his history starting with the Negro American League and visit the statue on your next trip to San Francisco. While you're at the statue, get the kids to count the palm trees in Willie Mays Plaza. Fun Fact: When they find 24, see if they can guess that the 24 palm trees represent Mays' jersey number.

The Presidio marks a key time in the history of the participation of Black people in the armed forces. In 2010, this park was named in honor of Ralph Dewitt House, a park champion who devoted himself to public service. House was a driving force and leader in ensuring open space in the Bayview community. He founded the Bayview Hill Neighborhood Association and was its president from 1985 through 2004. Beethoven Symphonies Abstracted
To accompany the National Symphony Orchestra’s Beethoven & American Masters concert series, author and illustrator Mo Willems presents Beethoven Symphonies Abstracted, an exhibition of nine large-scale, painted abstractions inspired by the music and genius of Beethoven. The nine works will be on display from January 8–March 20 in the Hall of Nations during the Center’s public operating hours. Advocate Speech Contest
Take a moment to listen (or read) MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech here. After soaking in the power of this great orator’s words, consider issues that move you to write your own speech in hopes of moving others. In celebration of  MLK Day, Takoma Park Library is challenging all kids 5-19 to create a speech where you highlight an issue or cause that is important to you. Activity details. 

Collaborative Poster Project 
This self-directed project shows the power of coming together! Head to Shepherd Park Library to get a small “puzzle piece” of a portrait to color at home. Decorate your section of this collaborative poster as you see fit and return your segment to the library by the end of Jan. These pieces will be glued together to create one giant portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. Your small piece is needed for the greater work! Activity details. 

Letters to Community Helpers
Pen a letter of appreciate to your favorite local hero. Share your heartfelt thanks with your favorite teacher, a local emergency worker or your neighborhood bus driver. These letters are being collected by Northeast Library in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to service. Drop your letter off at the designated mailbox by Jan. 16 to share words of kindness with community helpers. These letters (artwork is also welcome!) will be on display before being delivered. “I Have a Dream” Poetry Contest
In honor of MLK Day, Petworth Library is hosting a poetry and essay contest where kids can wax poetic about their vision for a better world. Kids 5-19 are invited to participate in this contest, simply drop your entry off by Jan. 20 (or email it to the library). Activity details.

Portland’s Singing Christmas Tree

This show features a beautifully crafted Nativity scene and is made possible through a masterful cast of singers, dancers, and local actors. You will be entranced by the live orchestra and humored by the dancing Santas in this festive feature, so be sure to carve out a space in one of these upcoming evenings to make memories with friends and family.

On Election Day you may need to take a break from the news. Mo WIllems and musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) may have just the thing to get your creativity flowing. Find some paper and markers and get ready for Democracy Doodle 2020. 

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ first-ever Education Artist-in-Residence, Emmy Award–winning writer and New York Times best-selling author and illustrator Willems, and musicians from the NSO invite you to express yourself in a different way this Election Night with Democracy Doodle 2020. 

Click on the Kennedy Center website at 7 p.m. ET for a series of doodle exercises led by WIllems accompanied by performances by members of the NSO.  

Democracy and doodles are both forms of self-expression worthy of celebration.

Bestselling Author Dan Brown Debuts Children’s Book & It Comes with a Soundtrack

One of your favorite authors is now branching out into picture books. Wild Symphony, a picture book by Dan Brown, author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code, was announced by Rodale Kids, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books. The book which is available now is accompanied by Brown’s first official music release.

The full Wild Symphony album was released simultaneously with the book and is available via all major digital platforms. The children’s classical music album is designed to enhance the read-aloud into a multisensory experience for children and adults.

The book features Maestro Mouse and his trusty baton visiting other animals and promises to inspire conversation around topics like compassion, patience, respect, and confidence, as well as mindfulness, taking life slowly, and community. And it wouldn’t be a Dan Brown book without clues and puzzles hidden throughout. 

The book can be read as a traditional read-along book or you can listen to the original music as you read, via a free interactive smartphone app, which uses augmented reality to instantly play the appropriate song for each page when the camera of a mobile device is held over it.

A preview of the music and behind-the-scenes footage is available now at the Wild Symphony website. At publication, the accompanying music app will be available for free download via the website and the QR code located in the book.

“I love storytelling, and my novels always attempt to weave together varied themes,” Brown explains. “With Wild Symphony, I was excited to build on this idea and create a truly layered experience by using three different languages simultaneously—art, music, and words. In the same way that an opera captivates its audience by presenting beautiful sets, dramatic music, and lyrical drama,  strives to be an immersive feast for eyes, ears, and mind, all at the same time.”
