The holiday season is here, excitement is high, and cabin fever is setting in. Don’t worry—time outdoors can save us. If everyone is bouncing off the walls at your house, pack up the raincoats, hats, and warm boots, and get them outside to burn off some energy. We’ve rounded up some of the best hikes and family-friendly strolls that are excellent year-round, so even in winter you can get out and enjoy. Our tip? Don’t forget the thermos of hot cocoa.

1. Scouters Mountain Nature Park

A comfortable and easy winter hike near Portland, this one is tucked away in southeast Portland (Happy Valley). Scouters Mountain is a great escape for a bit of fresh air anytime of year. You’ll play peek-a-boo with Mt. Hood in the distance as you slip in and out of the forest on this extinct lava dome. Some of the trees are over 100 years old. The loop trail is about a mile long, making it easy for all ages.

2. Wildwood Recreation Site

Just off Highway 26 on the way up to Mt. Hood you can find the perfect little area to explore winter at Wildwood Recreation Site. Over six miles of trails wind around the picturesque Salmon River—check out the Cascade Streamwatch Trail, a paved 3/4-mile loop that takes you to a fish viewing area below stream level. Will you see any fish on a snowy winter day? Time to find out!

3. Latourell Falls Loop

Just a half hour outside of Portland is one of the best waterfall hikes for kids in the Gorge—Latourell Falls. The hike is a 2.4-mile loop with minimal elevation changes. Winter means a slipperier, muddier trail, but the payoff is a stunning 224-foot high waterfall plunging into a rocky pool. The hike goes on to Upper Latourell Falls, which has two-tiers. Without leaves on the trees, you'll get a better view of the falls in winter. Bridges, splashy falls, and plenty of viewpoints make this a fun and popular winter hike near Portland.

4. Tualatin Hills National Wildlife Refuge

Attention, wildlife lovers! If you are looking for a dream Portland winter hike with kids, this refuge just outside of the city is one of the country's best examples of urban national wildlife refuge. It's also a great destination for a bit of fresh air and a chance to see some birds and wildlife. The 2-mile out-and-back Year Round Trail is open throughout winter (as the name implies). The colder season makes a great time to visit, as the area is on the Pacific Flyway and sees plenty of migratory action for waterfowl, shorebirds, and more. What will you discover as you wind through the habitat to peer out of the Wetland Observation Deck?

5. Cooper Mountain Nature Park

A beautifully managed nature park on the edge of Beaverton, Cooper Mountain offers 3.5 miles of trails that meander throughout habitats and vistas. The larger loop can be cut into smaller sections for shorter hikes, like the Cooper Mountain Loop or the shortest Little Prairie Loop. You'll catch views of the distant Chehalem Mountains and stroll through a prairie filled with majestic white oaks, which have dotted the meadows of Oregon for hundreds of years. In winter, lichen covers the trees, while red-tailed hawks and other raptors swoop through the air over the meadows. The leafless trees makes it easier to spot them, but they're still quick. Be sure to make some time for the nature play area with plenty of boulders and logs for jumping.

6. Hoyt Arboretum

A 190-acre wonderland of trees tucked away in Washington Park has been a favorite Portland winter hike for families forever. The 12 miles of trails are all named for notable sights you’ll see along the way, like the Maple Trail. In winter, be sure to check out the the majestic Douglas Firs all around, the Winter Garden for special blooms, and the Holly Trail for the bright red berries of its namesake. The Visitor Center is open daily and has a fun kids activity guide, or you can get a trail map online before heading over.

Good to Know: Access to this park is free, but there is a fee to park.

7. Tryon Creek State Natural Area

Tryon Creek is a beautiful natural area covering 650 acres with over eight miles of hiking trails. You’ll feel miles away from any civilization during this winter hike near Portland, even though it’s only about 15 minutes from downtown. Winter walks through Tryon mean a lush and wet trek through the large evergreens, but the well maintained trails make it a breeze. Kids will love counting bridges and watching the water stream under. The Visitor Center hosts educational activities and events often for this popular nature area.

8. Tamanawas Falls

If your crew is up for an adventure, pack the snow gear and head up Mt. Hood to Tamanawas Falls, about a 90 minute drive from Portland. In the winter you’ll want to be prepared for a very snowy road on the mountain, but these falls are popular enough that crews will still plow the parking lot. In dry weather it’s a relatively easy 3.5-mile round trip hike, with a stunning 150-foot waterfall. If it’s a snowy season the hike could be a lot more challenging, so plan accordingly. Even if you don’t make it all the way to the falls this time, the hike through a snowy old forest is scenery enough. Add a thermos of hot chocolate for a required treat.

Christmas Day is almost here. You’ve baked all the cookies and seen all the lights; now you’re looking for something to do with the kids after the holiday hurrahs are over. Luckily, there are plenty of Christmas things to do in Portland, even on that special day. From hiking and watching old movies to taking a river cruise or a day trip, we’ve got lots of activities that’ll keep your kids busy after the main event. Pull on your matching sweaters, fill a thermos of hot cocoa, and head out to explore.

1. Go See Christmas Lights

If you’ve already visited your neighborhood’s lights, take the family to Portland’s own Peacock Lane, filled with historic English-style cottages, which are all decked out in lights and decorations. A Portland tradition since the 1920s, there are two ways to see the houses: on foot and by car. If you’re staying in your car, visit at non-peak times, which are typically before 7 p.m. and after 10 p.m. Alternatively, head to the Portland International Raceway to be awed by the 250 illuminated holiday set pieces. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the “Largest Light Show West of the Mississippi.” So bring a thermos full of cocoa, adding some marshmallows for good measure, turn on the Christmas tunes and meander through a winter wonderland that is sure to leave a sparkle in your eye! This is open evenings throughout December including on Christmas Day, but be sure to order tickets ahead of time so you’re guaranteed a spot. Peacock Lane is, as always, free.

2. Marvel at Trees & a Gingerbread Display

Make it a downtown scavenger hunt: a tree, a gingerbread house, and more. At Pioneer Courthouse Square, you can visit the city’s holiday tree without the crowds on Christmas Day. The 75-foot Douglas-fir tree—provided each year by Stimson Lumber Company—will be lit up over 14,000 colorful lights. Bring some hot chocolate and treats for an extra magical experience.

Then, walk five blocks over to the Benson Hotel to spy their lobby gingerbread display, a tradition for over 50 years. This year's theme, Multnomah Falls, is surely one your kids will recognize. Made using 150 pounds of gingerbread, 50 pounds of marzipan, 20 pounds of chocolate, 10 pounds of Rice Krispies Treats, and more royal icing than you can image, it's truly a work for art. Our tip? After you've checked out this masterpiece, head to the Historic Stairwell and check out the hotel's mini museum featuring over 160 pictures of Portland's history.

3. Catch a Flick

You can’t beat the classic Christmas-at-a-movie-theater, so why even try. This year the big ticket shows are Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and the new Avatar: The Way of Water. All the area’s large theaters like Regal and Century are open, or head to McMenamins Baghdad or McMenamins Power Station to catch those flicks. For something slightly more festive, grab tickets at Vancouver’s sweet 1930s-era one-screen Kiggins Theater – they’re screening one showing each of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and The Bishop’s Wife, a Christmas rom-com with Cary Grant and Loretta Young from 1947.

Good to Know: The Moishe House will also be hosting a movie night complete with vegetarian Chinese food. RSVP if you want in on this event.

4. Head to the Coast

It’s a fact that the Oregon Coast is lovely in winter—maybe not in terms of weather, but in terms of less crowds, a rugged windswept beauty, and that cozy feeling of staying inside and playing games during a storm. Plus, winter storms tend to churn up more treasure for agate or seashell hunting. It’s also the season for clam digging and crabbing—clam diggers will want to watch for low tides when the beach is more exposed.

Check out Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers program for a fun treasure hunt. The city’s glassblowers drop surprise floats on the various beaches and if you find one, it’s yours to keep. This year, they’ll drop around 50 new floats from December 19 to 25. Good luck!

5. Explore the Great Outdoors

Whether it's a white Christmas or not, heading outside for some fresh air is a perfect way to get out the holiday wiggles. There are plenty of easy hikes around the city—at parks, arboretums, and in the Gorge. Without the leaves on the trees, you can even spot waterfalls and streams from further away. Be prepared with plenty of layers, water, hot drinks, and spare clothes.

6. Enjoy a River Cruise

1. Flagstaff Hill, Boston Common

The go-to spot for all things winter, grab the sleds and bring the kids to Flagstaff Hill at the Boston Common for an easy, nearby spot. There's plenty of room to spread out on this large expanse, so even when the hill is busy, you won't feel crowded. Then when you're done, head to the Frog Pond to skate a few laps around the rink. Our tip, plan a late afternoon trip so you can enjoy the holiday lights once the sun sets.

2. Larz Anderson Park, Brookline

There's a reason this park is popular with families once the snow flies. Not only do you get a sweeping view of the city skyline on a clear day, but you'll also find small slopes for newbie sledders and bigger hills for bigger kids, too. 4. Titus Sparrow Park, South End

If a nearby park that's sled-ready for your tot is what you're after, look no further than Titus Sparrow Park. In the winter, little kids can bring their sleds to slide down, walk up and slide down again as many times as their little legs will carry them. Fair warning, a thermos of hot cocoa may be in order.

5. President's Lawn at Tufts University, Medford

Rumor has it that back in the day, students used trays from the dining hall to sled down this hill. But we suggest you bring your best tube or saucer sled to glide down the slopes on this tree-lined snowy spot. The gentle slope is the right mix of thrill without too much spill (we hope!) so that everyone can enjoy it. And the haul-up factor is mild enough that most kids can do it without much help.

6. George Wright Golf Course, Hyde Park

Catch some air on this awesome hill at this beautiful golf course owned by the city of Boston. You'll find that this golf course has lots of great space for cross country skiing as well. 7. Corey Hill Outlook Park, Brookline

Long and steep is the name of the game at this park in Brookline. Plan to bring bigger kids here (or daring tots who love thrills) on a snowy winter day. Watch out for trees at the bottom of the hill, and plan to stop at the nearby playground if the kiddos still have any energy left before hitting the road to head home.

8. Danehy Park, Cambridge

What was once a landfill is now a hot sledding spot for Boston area families. After a fresh snowfall, it's the in place to be for those looking for just-right hills your kids can handle. Be sure to check out the awesome universal playground when you're there.

9. The Sugar Bowl by Jamaica Pond

You'll love this unique hill that's perfect for younger kids. It's inverted so the goal is to get as much momentum to get up the other side and back down again. The slopes are gentle and you don't have to worry about kids getting near the street or plowing into a tree.

10. Seven Bump Hill, Fellsmere Park

Whether or not mountainboarding was invented here, this sledding hill in Malden is sure to captivate your kids. See if they can find the seven bumps the hill is named for as they bump down the gentle grade. There's plenty of room to throw snowballs and enjoy the fluffy white stuff when you need a break from sledding too.

11. Weld Hill, Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University

The Arnold Arboretum has two sledding hills to choose from and one is known as the steepest and longest in the area. This is also a great spot to go snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall.

This park is known for its super-fun slide but in the winter the double sledding hill is the star. There's plenty of space to spread out away from other families and the kids can really get going if they start at the top.

14. Nashoba Valley Ski Area

Less than an hour from the city you'll find the Nashoba Valley Ski Area and Tubing Park. When the lanes open for the season, this is the spot everyone heads to for tubing fun. They have up to 18 lanes open, depending on the snow pack, and tickets for a two-hour tubing slot sell out quickly. Reserve yours in advance the week before you want to get out of town.

15. Ski Ward Ski Area

The TubaSlide at the Ski Ward Ski Area is another option that's not too far from the city. Bring the kids to enjoy a one- or two-hour tubing window on the weekday or weekends. They've got over 200 tubes for you to use, and 12 lanes to get you from the top of the hill to the bottom in super-fast time.

Come out and skate where to pros skate—the Winterhawks Skating Center. You don’t need to be a professional ice hockey player to skate here; they share the ice. Admission is $20, but if you have little ones who are 5 years and younger, don’t worry about paying—they skate for free. Be sure to stop by their concession stand for some snacks in between loops around the rink, or grab a hot cocoa for an added touch of the holiday feel.

Portland International Raceway Christmas Lights - Winter Wonderland

If you're looking for drive-thru Christmas lights in Portland, head down to the Portland International Raceway for a one-of-a-kind holiday experience. Recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest as the “Largest Holiday Light Show West of the Mississippi,” the 30th annual Safeway Winter Wonderland is unlike any light show you’ve ever seen. Spectators become part of the show as they drive through the track, taking in more than 250 set pieces and animated displays along the course. Plus, all proceeds from the event will benefit Sunshine Division's year-round hunger relief efforts.

'Tis the season to check out one of Portland’s most popular light experiences: ZooLights at, you guessed it, the Oregon Zoo. This larger-than-life display has more than a million and a half lights, plus all your favorite animals, too! You can take it all in two ways: on a classic walk through the grounds or from the comfort of your car during their drive-through experience.

Good to Know: All tickets are timed-entry and must be purchased in advance online. They range from $21-$29, and drive-thru tickets are $65. Remember, Zoo members receive discounted admission.

Christmas Ships Parade

The Christmas ships are coming! A fleet of ships have sailed down the Willamette and Columbia Rivers every year for 67 years. Grab a perch with a view (restaurants along the route book up quick), pack your thermos and blankets, and watch the floating lights go by. This is a great parade, and the best part is, you can catch it almost every night in December for free. Be sure to check online for when they’ll be closest to you, as the route changes. It's the perfect winter evening activity for tiny boat enthusiasts (and their parents).

Christmas Festival of Lights

The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights features more than two million lights and is the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. Concerts are scheduled each evening and families can also enjoy outdoor caroling, puppet shows, and storytimes.

Christmas on the Campground

Drive by or stroll through the Apostolic Faith Church’s campground to enjoy thousands of lights with the kids this year. The lights are on from dusk to dawn at this free display, and music plays at two different times throughout the night. In addition to the life-size nativity scene, the coolest part of the display is hands down the ginormous Christmas tree at the heart of the display. It's the tallest in Southeast Portland, and it's one reason to bring the kids to see this festive display.

Lightopia - An Illuminated Journey

Add Lightopia in Hillsboro to your light tour this year. Families can take in all the beautiful sights as you drive along a half-mile winter landscape. This free display is open for visitors on Sundays through Thursdays, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends until 10 p.m. One thing to note, you'll need a reservation to drive through, so snag one while you can.

Take a stroll on Peacock Lane

One street you absolutely cannot skip is Peacock Lane—known as Portland’s Christmas Street. Located in S.E. Portland, each house on this little street has been taking Christmas cheer to the next level since 1932. From nativity scenes and rotating trees to re-enactments of your favorite holiday characters and movies, Peacock Lane continues to delight visitors from near and far. You can find this super sweet displays along S.E. Peacock Lane between SE Stark and Belmont Streets.

Insider Tip: Families can walk the display without car congestion on pedestrian-only nights. This year they're scheduled for December 15-17.

Bring the magic of the season into your household with the scent of fresh pine and hard work. There’s no better way to deck your halls than with a U-cut tree from one of the best Portland Christmas tree farms around (although if we’re honest, a trip to see the Christmas Ships runs a close second). Whether it’s your first time in the fields, or you and the kids are old pros, make plans soon—these trees don’t stick around for long. So, bundle up, pack a thermos of hot chocolate, and head out on a wintery adventure with the kids.

Editor’s note: A few of these Portland Christmas tree farms are experiencing tree shortages and are only open for a weekend or two. Be sure to plan ahead if you want a fresh-cut tree this year.

1. Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm

This spot opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and gives a selection of options for your holiday tree choosing. You can either pick out your favorite Christmas tree from their store, use one of their saws to cut your own down, or have a friendly member of the staff cut the tree for you. Have the kids feed the farm animals and then warm up inside the store with hot drinks and try one of their homemade pumpkin donuts. If you’re lucky, Santa might visit while you’re there.

If you don't want to travel too far to find your Christmas tree, Portland families, look no further than this family-owned farm in the city. 3. Furrow Farm

This is your one-stop spot for gorgeous trees with all the trimmings (think mistletoe, wreaths, and garlands)—plus a whole lot of festive holiday fun to boot. Choose from a variety of both pre-cut and u-cut firs up to 15 feet tall. This is a beautiful third-generation family farm that raises hazelnuts, cattle, and horses alongside their seasonal trees. Enjoy a free tractor ride on weekends, walk their beautiful trails, then spy the varied farm animals.

4. Lee Farms

Seven generations of family farmers here grow several varieties of trees near Portland, including Noble, Nordmann, Grand and Douglas firs. Choose from their already-cut selection of trees or wander the fields to pick out one to cut yourself. This spot will cut, shake, and bale the tree for you, so you don't have to do much, if you don't want to. They'll also flock your tree for an extra charge, if you're seeking a snowy look. And if you get hungry, they have a market and bakery open throughout the week.

Good to Know: They are closed on Thanksgiving.

5. Christmas Mountain Choose & Cut

Make sure you make a reservation to visit this fourth-generation family-owned tree farm near Portland, where you can find Noble, Douglas, Grand, and Nordmann firs to cut down yourself using tree farm's bow saws (leave yours at home). Staff is on hand to help you with cutting, if you need, and they also offer free tree shaking and baling, and will carry your tree back from the fields. Stick around for the festive atmosphere!

Insider Tip: Santa and Mrs. Claus visit on weekends when you'll also find wagon rides, a gift shop, and fresh wreaths made on site.

Good to Know: The U-cut season ends here on December 11, 2022.

6. Thornton’s Treeland

Tucked minutes away from downtown Vancouver, Thornton’s Treeland offers not only trees but a beautiful lifesize Nativity scene, hot chocolate and coffee in their rustic old barn. You’ll also find wreaths, crafts and even some treats for the kids in the barn, as well as a petting zoo. They also offer hayrides through the trees, where you can take your pick of firs like Douglas, Noble, Nordmann, Fraser and Grand (prices vary by variety).

7. JTB U-Cut Christmas Trees

At JTB Christmas Trees in Gresham your family can have a fun time walking through the fields and picking out your own tree. This beautiful farm has over four acres of Noble, Grand, and Douglas firs to choose from. There are no pre-cut trees, so come prepared to cut! They provide all of the tools you need to easily cut down and transport your tree, and they offer free shaking and baling to clean out the debris and make it easy to install in your home. Only cash or personal checks are accepted here.

8. Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm

The magical red barn at Helvetia is full of local gifts and decor like handmade wreaths and lavender products. Elsewhere, you can find an open fire pit with free marshmallows, and visits with Santa Claus; you can make a whole magical afternoon of it at this family farm. Noble and Turkish trees are available for u-cut, at heights of up to 10 feet, with free shaking and baling.

Good to Know: Plan ahead—because of this year's tree shortage they’re only offering one weekend of u-cut on November 25 to 27 and another weekend to pick out pre-cut trees only on December 3 and 4.

9. Sauvie Island Farms

After the berry-picking crowds of summer have dispersed, and the pumpkin season is over, it’s time for fir trees at this popular third-generation family farm. U-cut Douglas, Grand, and Noble fir trees are available, alongside fresh wreaths and cedar garlands. While this Portland tree farm doesn’t come with all the holiday activities, these prices can’t be beat (just $50 a tree), so you have some extra cash for more presents or goodies. Plus, they've got saws so you can cut your own tree, and they offer tree bailing too. But they won't be offering wreaths or garlands this year.

Good to Know: Due to low inventory, Sauvie Island Farms will only be open for U-cut Christmas trees on November 25 and 26, 2022. If they do not sell out on those days, they'll open that next Friday and Saturday too.

10. Pollard Ranch Christmas Tree Farm

This farm has about 35,000 fresh cut or U-cut trees at various stages of growth, including many in the 5-7 feet range. For something a little different (or maybe for the kids' room?), you can pick up a table-top tree that will grow larger for use in future years. You can also get your fresh wreaths, garlands, and tree stands here, too. Short on time? Pre-order your tree online before you stop by.

Good to Know: Pollard Ranch offers home delivery limited only to the Portland metropolitan area.
