Do you ever wonder how to be a good neighbor? It can be as simple as waving hi, chatting up the family next door, or helping someone out when they need a hand. Remember, it’s never too late to strengthen your bond with the people who live next door, across the street, or at the end of the block. Here are 12 simple ways you and the kids can connect with your neighbors today and every day.

1. Ask them their name. This seems like a no-brainer, but so often we don’t know even know our neighbor’s names!

2. Exchange phone numbers. A simple gesture that says you’re looking out for them.

3. Bake something. The holidays often bring this kind of tradition, but why not invoke it on a random Wednesday? Few people will be disappointed in freshly baked bread, cookies, or other goodies. And everybody loves coffee cake.

4. Plant it. A cutting from your favorite houseplant or a pre-potted begonia: even a small bouquet of flowers is a sweet and inexpensive way to say, “Hey!”

5. Arrange an interview. Use this get-to-know-your-neighbors guide to help your kids interview your neighbors.

6. Make it a double. Next time you’re at the store, grab an extra bar of soap, dishwashing liquid or another cleaning product and gift it to your neighbor. It doesn’t need to be expensive, and keep in mind many people have chemical and scent sensitivities.

7. Make a hello card. Have the kids paint or draw a simple card that just says “Hello, neighbor!”

8. Carry the load. Help unload the trunk of the car or pick up a package from the bottom of the stairs and place it in front of their door.

9. Invite them to dinner. Make dinner at your house or meet them at your favorite place. There are so many options for your comfort level.

10. Do a work exchange. Mow their lawn, shovel their driveway, pull weeds or something similar. Even if you live in an apartment building you can help tidy up communal spaces or carry their recycling down to the street.

11. Organize a pot-luck. If you don’t have the space to do this in your own place, use a nearby park or community center. Make simple invites that you hand-deliver and set a time limit.

12. Start a club. If you share a passion or hobby with your neighbor, do this hobby together or start a group in your community. This could be a book club, knitting club, woodworking club and so on. The options are endless!

Nerf Sells a Dart Vacuum & Parents Can Finally Rejoice

2020 saw many a plant parent born and raised, and the obsession doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon. What many of us learned is that it’s not just about the right lighting or the right water, it’s about finding a plant that is as resilient as it is beautiful. Enter the Money Tree, aka Pachira aquatica. Rated as one of the most popular houseplants, ever and selling out from popular sites like Bloomscape and The Sill, you’ll soon be able to get this little beauty at your local ALDI.

In spite of its complex, braided trunk and lush looking leaves, this plant is as easy to care for as a faux plant. It can handle all kind of light conditions, including low light, and can take infrequent watering. While it has ideal conditions (watering when soil looks dry, keeping the air humid) it can take quite a bit of…ahem…neglect.

The tree gets its common name because it is thought to bring good luck and prosperity to the household, popular especially in Taiwanese and Chinese homes where the braids trap fortune.

It will come in at 5 inches tall and cost just $7.99. Gift yourself one on your next ALDI store run, beginning January 13.

With Halloween fast approaching, families with young children are wondering how they can enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season in this year of the coronavirus. But just because 2020 has been full of tricks doesn’t mean families should go without their Halloween treats! According to my colleagues at Kiddie Academy, this is the year to reinvent your favorite holiday traditions or create brand new ones. Our education team offers some thought-starters for making the most of this most-unusual Halloween.

Since trick-or-treating involves numerous points of contact and social distancing will be a major challenge, it may be wise to think creatively and restrict trick-or-treating activities to members of your own family bubble. Most communities are in the process of making those assessments, if they haven’t already done so. The result is that we’re likely to see trick-or-treating rules differ from community to community this year, so you’ll want to make sure you know what to expect in your neighborhood.

If trick or treating can proceed in your community, here are a few ways to maximizing the fun:

  • Consider incorporating a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved face mask into your child’s costume. This way, if traditional trick or treating does take place, your child can show off their mask as part of their ensemble!
  • Set out candy packed in individual treat bags at the end of your driveway for the trick or treaters to grab and for you and your children to admire the costumes in a socially distant way.
  • Invite relatives within your “circle” to set up socially distant stations in an open area like a field or large backyard. This usually includes family members dressing up and decorating a table to a Halloween theme, much like a trunk-or-treat.

If trick or treating is unable to take place in your community, here are a few tips to reinvent the festivities:

  • Invite your children to set up their favorite games in stations around the house. The entire family plays each game and when a game is completed the children get candy. Don’t worry, the adults may have candy too!
  • Create a candy scavenger hunt around your home. Hide candy and create clues as to where the candy can be found. Encourage your children to dress up to solve the clues and find the candy.
  • Invent creepy candy concoctions in the kitchen. Provide a variety of candy for your children to combine to create new flavors and silly treats. Add ice-cream into the mix for a frozen fall delight.

Another idea to consider? The Great Pumpkin Candy Giveaway, an activity Kiddie Academy introduced last year. On a normal Halloween, it involves taking a portion of the candy your kids collect while trick-or-treating and donating to charitable organizations. This year, if there’s no door-to-door trick-or-treating in your area, you can donate the candy you might otherwise have given away. Here you have a great lesson in generosity, empathy, and kindness for your children. Plus, it keeps all that extra sugar out of their (and your!) mouths. See here for more information on the Great Pumpkin, which includes a list of organizations that accept candy.

For families dealing with rare and serious diseases, isolation, and not being able to learn or socialize alongside friends, is a year-round reality.

In spring 2020, COVID-19 flipped our world upside down. And now with back to school looking more like “back to the computer screen while mom and dad try to juggle remote working, too”, kids are missing out more than ever on their usual, IRL daily interactions with peers. Read on to learn how 10-year-old Naperville residents Olivia Donnelly and her mom Lisa make the best of their socially-distanced days and find connection when feeling separated from their once-upon-a-time, everyday lives.

Olivia was born with a rare and serious heart disease that called for multiple surgeries and two heart transplants. She spent months recuperating in the hospital and her family was forced to learn quickly how to socially distance to keep Olivia healthy, while also remaining connected with family, friends and community.

Start a socially-distanced book club. “Olivia has three close friends that we know and trust who did a book club together. The girls got together at each other’s houses in rotation over the summer. Each parent packed the girls with their own snack and beverage and we kept get-togethers at 1.5 hrs in length. They set up outside with appropriate distancing between one another. They were all ecstatic to see one another and we as parents were comfortable with the setting!”

Settle in for a Facetime movie night. “This has been big for us with any friend or family member that we cannot socialize with in person. Olivia even had a few Facetime movie nights with her friends where they all got in pjs and “watched” a movie together via Zoom; they were excited to giggle and interact as well as the bonus perk of extended bedtime.”

Make a mask fashion statement. Find masks that your children find attractive. “For our son (5yrs) that means finding masks that have Paw Patrol and Trucks/Cars on the material. Olivia likes fashionable masks that she can match with her outfits—she’s generally too cool for prints!

Make sure your mask fits comfortably. Make sure the mask fits well and doesn’t have any weird textures by asking yourself: would you want to wear the mask? How do the earloops feel? Is it too thick of material to wear outside during summer weather? You can find breathable materials that do not increase risks. The first time our 5-year-old wore his mask out, even though he understood the importance, we rewarded him with a little treat to ensure he felt good about the experience. He doesn’t fight wearing the mask now because he knows it’s his ticket to freedom outside of the house, no additional reward or treat necessary.”

Support a local restaurant with an alfresco, trunk-side picnic. “We miss eating out at restaurants, but we’ve tried to do takeout from our favorite places to show them support and keep that little family treat going. We’ve also headed to our local, favorite drive-thru a few times, and we parked and opened up the back of our car to eat al fresco, a.k.a. a ‘trunk picnic’.”

While Olivia’s heart condition has caused countless moments of uncertainty and fear, the Donnelly family has always relied on Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana as a place to stay and get better together in between doctors’ visits and critical surgeries.

Families staying at Ronald McDonald House are feeling the same uncertainty we’re all feeling, with the additional and unimaginable stress of caring for a sick child. Consider donating today, to help keep families like Olivia’s together, families whose challenging times were already difficult. Your gift will help ensure kids have their parents by their side through treatment and recovery, right where they belong.
