Thanks to an earlier-than-normal winter storm, finding snow near me is more than just a fantasy

It may not snow in San Diego, but when the weather gets chilly you don’t have to go far to find it. There’s so much fun for kids (both little and big) to have in the nearby mountains that goes beyond just skiing and snowboarding—see below for a few of our favorite go-to spots that will surely make your winter bucket list. Here you’ll find the best snow tube parks and sledding, magic carpets and gondolas to ride. So get your winter gear in order, grab some chains—now’s the time for an unforgettably fun day in the snow in Southern California.

1. Big Bear

Slide into fun at Grizzly Ridge Tube Park at the top of Snow Summit in Big Bear. The whole family young and old alike will love whizzing down the snowy hills on high-speed tubes. Ride the magic carpet up to the top before sliding down one of three 300-ft tubing lanes. Ride again and again during your 1.5-hour time slot.

2. Mammoth Mountain

Snowmobile adventures, tubing, and cross country skiing await you on Mammoth Mountain. Cruise through tree-lined meadows on a guided snowmobile excursion or catch a lift to the top for Woolly's Tube Park and snow tube your way back down. You can click into some Nordic skis or snowshoes to get a workout exploring Lakes Basin on a cross country adventure.

3. Mountain High

Your little snow angels will squeal with delight at Yeti's Snow Play. Here you'll find some of SoCal's best snowtubing, sledding, and snow play...as well as a friendly Yeti who's willing to pose for pics. The snow play area is open only for kids 36” tall and under, while those over 36” tall can go sledding, tubing, and ride the gondola up to the top! Kids between 32” and 36” can snow tube with a paid parent on a separate tube.

4. Mount Laguna

You’ll be able to cool down on top of this mountain about an hour due east of San Diego. When you head up, there are plenty of turn-off spots, but it does get crowded. Along with your boots and mittens, you’ll want to bring some snacks, a full tank of gas, and some snow chains.

5. Julian

You’ll have to wait for just the right time, but every year a good northern storm can drop snow in Julian. Watch the weather reports, then drive up right after it snows. Google "snow sled near me" and you'll find this is the best place to tackle small snow hills and then warm up with some hot apple pie in town. Remember, the snow melts quickly around Julian.

Good to Know: Please only park in designated lots and not on residents’ yards and sides of the road. Also please pack out what you bring in. Many times the town has to clean up after visitors. This is a problem every year, so please be considerate in this small town.

Grab some skates and show off your sweet moves (and festive winter wear). It’s time to go ice skating in Seattle

While odysseys to see the holiday light displays in Seattle and catch those favorite holiday shows may top your list of winter fun activities, we know many Seattle families look forward to the season of ice skating, too. It’s a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time, and it’s less messy and wet than playing in the snow (unless you fall on the ice, but even that’s not too bad). From pop-up seasonal rinks you can only find in winter to indoor facilities where you can skate year-round, here’s where Seattle goes to ice skate.

Seasonal Seattle ice skating rinks you need to check out

Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink

Get ready for the return of the Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink, now in its 25th season. This perennial event, presented by Symetra, is a signature element of Bellevue's Season of Cheer. The Downtown Ice Rink features the Seattle region’s largest seasonal ice skating experience–with more than 9,000 square feet of real ice. The best part? The rink is covered and open-air, allowing for safe, all-weather skating. Other highlights include a heated viewing area, on-site concessions and a series of special events throughout the holiday season, like Football Sundays and an Apple Cup Skate Night the day after Thanksgiving. Advance tickets are a must to reserve your ice skating session (especially on busy weekends and holidays) and ticket prices are included in the admission price.

Insider Tip: Free skating lessons offered this season on select dates, starting Nov. 22, are a big perk for families with first-time or novice skaters.

Dates: Nov. 18, 2022-Jan. 8, 2023

Seattle Children's Museum

Who needs to go ice skating when you can go sock skating with your Littles at the Seattle Children's Museum? Part of the city's downtown Winterfest celebration, Seattle Children's Museum will host a special Winterfest-themed exhibit all winter long. Not only can the kids skate on a real synthetic ice rink (don't forget your socks!), they can also build snow people, grab a drink or pastry from the nearby carts, and then enjoy them all by the play fire pits. Sounds like an idyllic winter afternoon to us. This exciting winter experience is included with admission.

Dates: Nov. 25-Feb., 2023

305 Harrison St.
Seattle

Occidental Square Pop-Up Ice Rink

For one weekend only, families can enjoy this pop-up ice skating rink in downtown Seattle. Free for everyone, the ice rink will be filled with skaters of all ages and abilities. If you've got your own skates, bring them along. If not, they'll have skates on hand to borrow. Just remember to bundle up—this rink is totally outside.

There will be holiday lights to make it festive, music to get you in the spirit, and fire pits around the area to warm your fingers when it's time for a break. Concessions will also be available. We love that families can rent the rink for a winter birthday party, too. You'll need to book in advance for this one, and skate rentals are included in the price.

Skate at these Seattle ice skating rinks all year long

Kraken Community Iceplex

Seattle's newest kid on the block, the Kraken Community Iceplex, is a winner with families. Not only can you and the kids find ice skating lessons for everyone (you too, parents) and birthday bash packages here, but the daily public skate sessions are a great way to engage in your new favorite pastime. Saving a spot is easy to do (and highly recommended for popular days like weekends and school holidays). Then it's as simple as showing up a bit early to rent skates before hitting the ice. When you're done, head to the 32 Bar & Grill to warm up with poutine or maybe a fresh salad. The kids menu is dead on for reliable faves. And families can always grab a cup of the good stuff or hot cocoa for the kids at the Starbucks, if you're pressed for time.

Insider Tip: If you can't be at the game, try the second best seat in the house—the Iceplex—to watch the Kraken play on game night.

Sno-King Ice Arenas

Sno-King Ice Arenas now has three locations and all are open for public skating year-round. Public skating times at each rink vary from day to day and week to week. Be sure to check the online schedule and reserve your spot (a must) to make your family skating plans. The price doesn't include skate rental, but everything you need to glide into the winter season is available to rent there, including skate rentals, walkers and seals. In addition to public skate, you can sign your kids up for ice hockey, figure skating lessons, or throw a birthday bash for a small group of friends. Sno-King offers holiday hockey camps at all three locations for kids who want to rule the ice.

Holiday Ice Skating: Add a little holiday pep in your public ice skating session when you attend Sno King's Sno-Skate Lane. Offered at all three locations, from December 17 through January 1, 2023, it's a chance for kids to see Santa, play games, take a few photos, and more. Registration is required.

Lynnwood Ice Center

More serious skaters should head a little further up I-5 to the Lynnwood Ice Center. Skating lessons begin at age 4 and skate rentals are available for tiny toddler size 6 feet all the way up to men's size 14. The rink does tend to be a bit on the cold side–it is an ice rink after all. Those parents who will be sitting on the concrete stands will want to bring a blanket to stay warm. Weekday sessions usually aren’t all that busy, but tickets are still required in advance, as the front desk is unable to take payments.

Kent Valley Ice Centre

This is a nice option for families in the South Sound. With more than 66,000 square-feet of ice and fun features like an epic sound system and black light skate nights, you can skate your way to family fun any time of year. This rink rents skates for $5 in sizes as small as a toddler 6, plus kids ages 3 and younger skate for free. Helmets are also available for a $2 rental fee and walkers are just $5 for little learners. For those with thin blood, the cafe serves up all your favorite hot foods and beverages and is a welcome respite from the cold concrete seats at the rink. Need a break from the ice? The putt putt course out front and batting cages around the side are also fun and not terribly crowded.

Good to Know: Remember to reserve your public skate spot in advance.

Sprinker Recreation Center

Although it's a bit of a drive, Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma is going all out for the winter season with Ice Light public skate sessions. This experience opens Dec. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. While you're skating 'round the rink, marvel at the more than 35,000 twinkling lights and animated displays your kids will love. A singing Christmas tree show is part of the fun, and the snow flurries falling from the "sky" add a bit of magic to this indoor experience. Have your kids drop off a letter to old St. Nick at his special mailbox when you're done. Our favorite part is the special ice bumper cars. It's a real-life hockey puck experience that you can only find here.

The best spots for families to find fall colors in Seattle are closer than you think

Can you feel the crisp, cool breeze coming in the air? Fall is right around the corner. And that means some of our favorite family activities are starting to up the family calendar: rooting for the Seahawks, sipping apple cider, visiting pumpkin patches, and making our way through corn mazes when we’re done. We’re also on the cusp of a foliage fireworks explosion in Seattle with reds, oranges, and golds that only come out for a few weeks each year. The fall foliage views are spectacular, and the family fun lasts all season long. The gorgeous fall colors in Seattle are not to be missed. Now’s the time to plan to see fall colors in Seattle with the kids and book a fall mini-session while you’re at it.

1. Kubota Garden

The hidden jewel of Rainier Beach, Kubota Garden, is the loveliest way for families in south Seattle to enjoy the fall colors. Japanese maples are the marquee star of this autumn show, and Kubota Garden has over 140 varieties. Kids will love the hidden waterfall and fish pond, and you’ll appreciate the easy (free) parking and relaxed vibe. Kubota Garden is free to all, from sunrise to sunset, every day of the year. Whether you spend 30 minutes or three hours, you can't go wrong at this urban oasis. Buy timed tickets to visit the Seattle Japanese Garden at the south end of the Arboretum ($4-$8/person; free, ages 5 & under). Well worth the effort, the Japanese Garden is smaller, more intimate, and even more colorful than the garden next door.

Less than 30 miles from Seattle, Mukilteo is a charming nautical village with tremendous views and fun things to do. And fall colors galore! The Japanese Gulch hike offers a multitude of trails that lead to hidden coves and sandy beaches. The area was used for defense during World War II. But instead of turning the lovely area into an industrial park, the community of Mukilteo created the Japanese Gulch Wildlife Habitat in 2014, purchasing the land and preserving it for public use. Bring your kites; the kids will love to fly them high above the beach while you wait to feed the fam at Ivar's or Diamond Knot

11. Mount Rainier

The Lower 48s second tallest mountain calls out to Seattle every day from its mystical perch on the southern horizon. If it’s been a while since your last trip to Mount Rainier, fall is a fantastic time to go, and not just because of the fall foliage. The crowds are less plentiful, and the mountain is beautifully exposed after the long summer runoff. Vine maple and high elevation huckleberry bushes begin to turn in late September, and the larch burns brightly yellow well into October. Just remember that some of the visitors centers close for the season or reduce hours starting in mid-September.

Just as we watched our babies transform into opinionated toddlers and then imaginative school-goers, our rising tweens reveal ever more of their personalities and passions that aren’t so little anymore. A big part of instilling confidence along the way is showing our respect for their self-expression—their rooms being an important extension of that. Read on for fun and inspiring tween room decor ideas to help make their space truly their own.

Start with a Clean Slate

Wall space is one of the first terrains you may remember taking control of yourself, whether you collaged photos of friends or hung posters of your favorite bands (or 90210 stars). If your tweens have lived and played in their rooms since nursery-hood, it may well be time for a fresh coat of paint anyway (in a color or fun accent of their choosing). Then let them change up what most inspires them. If you have framed prints they want to update, sites like Etsy, Wayfair and Minted have a range of options and price points. A large bulletin board is easy to refresh, and storyboarding is also a great study tool for visual learners.

The experts at Highlights Learning say it’s a great idea to have a “school stuff” zone, so everything is in one place, making staying on top of schoolwork all the easier. If your tween doesn’t already have a study station, go for a desk that will last through this next stage of her education when she'll be working independently. If you’re short on space, set something up under a lofted bed, go DIY with a hideaway desk, or even retrofit a closet. (We have many more workstation ideas rounded up, too.) And don’t forget wall space when it comes to keeping workflow in check and in style, like a chalkboard calendar, functional pegboard or mounted storage.

Delegate Organization

Lorena Canals

Remember those early years of rounding up their toys, puzzles and miscellaneous “projects” every night before bed? Now that it’s their job to keep a tidy room, help your tween stay organized by stowing away anything on the loose in stylish storage bins, like these hand-crafted, 100% cotton, and naturally dyed baskets from Lorena Canals. We love that these are also machine washable and available in ash-rose, aubergine, black, and vintage blue.

Clean Out the Bookshelf

It’s that time again to weed shelves and make room for all the new titles they’ll be bringing home in middle school. While they may be reading a fair share on tablets or computers, it’s essential to have real deal books within reach to keep encouraging reading for fun. For age-specific reading inspiration, check out our list of some of the best graphic novels for tweens and teens

Update the Sleep Zone

Just as you once transitioned that crib to a toddler or twin bed, it may again be time to re-think sleep. If you have space to work with, consider upgrading to a full or queen that will him off to college (and serve as future guest accommodations, too). Or, perhaps you’re keeping twin beds on hand for the sleep-over circuit now in full swing. No matter the sleeping arrangement, the bedding theme itself could most likely use a refresh.

Let Their Personal Passion Shine

Courtesy of PBteen

By this age, many tweens are well on their way to honing a sport, hobby or passion. Their personal space can certainly reflect that, be it a guitar propped in a corner for an aspiring shredder, an oversized world map for a traveler in training, or a printing service for a budding photographer’s latest shots. These metal wall signs from Pottery Barn are perfect for sports fans.

Re-Organize the Closet

iStock

Just as their rooms do, closets should also grow and adapt as our kids do. Marty Basher, an interior design expert at Modular Closets, has some choice tips for tween parents when it comes to organizing closets. “Formal events, dances, concerts, and performances bring the need for more hanging space in the closet,” Basher says. “With their input you can create a space to hang jewelry and formal dresses or suits and uniforms and full-size sports equipment.” Basher also advises adding hooks, a full-length mirror, and shoe storage solutions. “Use under the bed storage for off-season shoes and boots and only have what they’ll need for the season in the closet. Make use of boxes and baskets for high storage of items they don’t use regularly but can reach now when they need them.”

Add a Dash of Green

Houseplants do so much to bring fresh air and energy to our interior spaces. So why not give your tween room a little something living to tend to that will give a little fresh O2 in return for a brain boost? You can even rent a plant for a few months to see how your tween does with the new responsibility.
