The ongoing efforts to revive the area have not stopped, and there’s still plenty to do

Hurricane Ian hit Fort Myers, FL, a year ago, and while the popular vacation destination took a devastating hit to beachfront homes and attractions, with determination and resilience, residents and business owners have worked hard to bring the idyllic spot back to its glory. We had a chance to visit the beach town this summer, and even with the ongoing work to re-open the main strip of property hardest hit by the storm, there were so many fun things to do in Fort Myers and in the surrounding areas that we were honestly surprised that we didn’t miss (too much) the long days in the sand and sun.

The beaches are open, as are restaurants farther off the main strip (like in Bonita Springs and surrounding areas) and family attractions like animal sanctuaries, fun parks, and science centers. The water has cleared up, and there’s nothing quite like the ocean in Southwest Florida. If you’re looking to support a hardworking community while enjoying a relaxing family adventure, Fort Myers is the place for you.

I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the area, and even with the ongoing efforts to revive the area, there are plenty of fun things to do in Fort Myers, FL, with kids.

Explore Bonita Springs

Wonder Gardens is in Bonita Springs and it's a fun thing to do in the Fort Myers area

This quintessential Florida town is just four miles from the beach, and the downtown area is filled with unique restaurants and shops. You can ride your bike along the main strip and enjoy attractions perfect for families.

A must is the Wonder Gardens, a botanical garden and refuge for over 300 rescued and rehabilitated birds and reptiles. It’s in the heart of Bonita Springs and is the perfect space for younger kids. Admire the Macaws and Peacocks, talk with a Cockatoo, and check out the conservatory that feels like it belongs in the garden of a Victorian mansion.

After your time there, walk over to Survey Cafe. One of our favorite meals was at this cozy French cafe. Housed in a former cottage that reminds you of Old Florida, we admired the patio shaded by oak trees and Spanish moss. A family-owned establishment, there’s a crepe option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and the Eggs Benedict was perfection. We wanted to come back for lunch to try the smoked salmon, the Ruben sandwich, and the veggie burger wrap, but we ran out of time. The next time we visit the area, Survey Cafe is at the top of the list.

Another fun dining spot is Waffle Monkey. If you plan on eating here on the weekend, be prepared to wait or get there early! The line at this modern breakfast eatery was out the door but worth the wait. As the name suggests, it’s all about the Belgian waffles here. However you want your waffle served, there’s probably an option. Think classic waffles served with syrup and powdered sugar, waffles topped with eggs and bacon, waffles loaded with banana, coconut, and honey, a waffled smothered in Nutella and peanut butter, and much more. The freshly roasted coffee will perk you up after one of these delicious concoctions.

Coconut Jack's is an iconic restaurant near Fort Myers

One restaurant we were thrilled to see open is the iconic Coconut Jack’s Waterfront Grill. Located a couple blocks from the beach, this legendary spot is known for its menu featuring local seafood. We started with the famous coconut shrimp and BBQ pulled pork nachos, which my son loved. The clam chowder was delicious, and although we didn’t try the grouper bites, we had serious food envy when we saw an order come out. The Mahi tacos are also a customer favorite; don’t forget to check out their fun cocktail options.

One of the best aspects of this spot is the experience. It is on the water, the wait staff is excellent, and the vibe is relaxed and fun. They also offer a free valet service, as the parking lot is cramped. Do not miss this spot while vacationing here.

Find Hands-On Entertainment

An afternoon at PopStroke is a fun things to do in Fort Myers

We loved hanging out at PopStroke for the afternoon. This open-concept restaurant has two 18-hole putting green courses designed by Tiger Woods. Fun for kids and adults alike, there’s not just the course but also a playground, an ice cream counter, ping pong, and corn hole. This location is one large patio with plenty of seating overlooking the golf area. The menu offers a variety of options from everything from fantastic hamburgers to baby back ribs, giant pretzels, quinoa salads, and a fun assortment of kids’ bites like mac and cheese, sliders, corn dogs, and, of course, the ever-popular chicken tenders.

A Southwest Florida staple for over 80 years, The Shell Factory should be at the top of your to-do list. Besides the world-famous gift shop that sells the largest selection of (you guessed it) seashells in the world, kids will love the fun park with zip lines, bumper boats, a climbing pole, mini golf, and much more.

They also have fun seasonal events, and the restaurant serves plenty of snacks for the family (adult beverages, too!). You’ll also find a newly renovated arcade room and a year-round Christmas shop, and the Nature Park is home to over 400 animals, a dinosaur park, and an outdoor playground.

One fun thing to do in Fort Myers with kids is spend a day at the IMAG History & Science Center. With 60 exhibits, you’ll need to take a family vote on what everyone wants to do. Check out the Living Lab, which includes a 3,600-gallon tank home to tropical fish and a replica of the USS Mohawk. The Sea-to-See Exhibit has twice-daily feedings and hourly demonstrations with sea urchins, sea stars, sea horses, and stingrays. For budding meteorologists, a visit to the Weather Lab, with exhibits like the IMAG TV studio, Science on a Sphere, and the Google Earth Wall will be irresistible.

In the Hands-On Hall, little ones will love the Imagination Playground filled with those fantastic big blue blocks that can be used to engineer creative structures, and thrill-seekers can explore the concepts of gravity and velocity in the Rollercoaster Builder area.

Another fun thing to do in Fort Myers, FL, is check out the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium. Explore the stars at one of two daily shows, visit the Raptor Aviary, or wander around on the trails that cover the 100-acre space.

Hang by the Pool (& Fireside)

Coconut Point Resort in Fort Myers

There are a few lodging features that create the perfect vacation equation whenever my kids and I take a trip. Pool? Check. Lawn games and fire pits? Check. On-site restaurants for every age and palate? Check. Comfy beds and friendly staff? Check and check!

When we arrived at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort, we were excited to see that every box was checked. Not only does the resort top our list of the best resorts in Florida with water parks, but the lawn spans from patio steps to the sand pit and climbing wall, and the massive fire pits welcome ten or more guests at a time. Choose from multiple dining options like Cool Beans, featuring a candy bar, to-go beverages, s’mores kits, and snacks, or Tarpon Springs, where guests dine on oysters, lobster, salmon, and other coastal favorites.

Events and activities vary, but there will often be live music and fun games for kids: limbo, relay races, 3-legged races, and even a craft or two.

Be Closer to the Beach

A year after the storm, many resorts closer to the beaches in Fort Myers are open. The legendary Pink Shell Beach resort is taking reservations and most amenities have re-opened. DiamondHead Beach Resort is also open with beach access, and Margaritaville Resort Fort Myers Beach is taking reservations starting in Jan. 2024.

The Fort Myers community is strong, and our trip put into perspective not only that this area of Southwest Florida will return bigger and better than ever, but even as they continue to build, a trip there will be one the whole family can enjoy.

Editor’s note: This trip was paid for by Visit Florida, but all opinions belong to the writer.

North county folks, the day has arrived—The Shake Shack, located in The Beacon La Costa, is now open for business. Rumors about the modern-day “roadside” burger stand, known for its 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers, chicken sandwiches, and flat-top Vienna beef dogs opening its fifth San Diego location in Carlsbad, surfaced last year. The La Costa location offers a walk-up window, which gives guests the ability to pre-order via the Shack app and pick up their food from the exterior of the shack. Whether you choose to take out or dine in, we recommend trying the Shroom Burger—the delicious option proves that a "veggie" burger can be the star of the show! The mushroom is breaded, fried, and full of cheese, and can easily be a family favorite.

JUST OPENED: Winner Winner Chicken

This spot at Hillsdale Mall just re-opened after originally opening just before COVID lockdowns began. Now they're ready to serve you and if you haven't been there, you definitely need to check it out! Winner offers signature Nashville-style hot fried chicken sandwiches, hot chicken tenders, gourmet inspired salads, and sides like mac and cheese, and broccoli Caesar salad. They also have Little Winner meals available for the kids with two tenders or grilled chicken, plus one side, one sauce and a kids drink.

Winner’s signature hot chicken sandwich features their specialty fried chicken: crispy, juicy and tender and offered in four spice levels (WARNING: order extra spicy, only if you dare!). The sandwich is topped with housemade tangy slaw and comeback sauce (liike Thousand Island with a kick), served on quite possibly the best bun we've ever tasted (it's made in house). Get the BBQ chicken eggrolls to share and the lemonade slushie for your beverage. If you're wanting a salad in lieu of a sandwich, go for Barry's Bootcamp with spicy chicken. It's large and in charge.

A Gorgeous Setting That's Idyllic During All Four Seasons

Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara

Thanks to southern California's ideal weather and year-round beach vibe, Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara is truly a destination you can visit any day of the year, throughout all four seasons. This Spanish colonial hideaway is nestled within 22-acres of lush jungle and boasts serene gardens and the largest planting of Kentia palm trees outside of Australia. The relaxed setting has a tropical feel akin to Hawaii––but you needn't fly anywhere when this phenomenal resort is so close to home.

Oceanfront Swimming at Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club

Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara

Guests of the Resort's Jungle Rooms and higher categories have access to the glamorous and wow-worthy Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club. Here you can dive in to one of the world's largest swimming pools, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. There's also a smaller pool for young kids and a large whirpool you can relax in while soaking up ocean views. Private Cabanas are also available that come complete with staff to attend to you.

Seamlessly enjoy both the pool and the beach via the Club's private, gated stairway to Butterfly Beach. Plan on heading up to the sundeck to watch the sun set over the ocean each evening.

Get your workout in at the fitness centre that offers an array of equipment and fitness classes as well as spa areas with stone-clad steam rooms and red-cedar saunas.

Dining options at the Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club include poolside dining at Coral Café and Bar and fresh-pressed organic juices and smoothies from Fins during the day. For dinner, head to Tydes to dine on local seafood and seasonal dishes with Mediterranean flair.

Direct Access to Butterfly Beach

Beth Shea

As mentioned above, it's a truly priceless experience to be just footsteps away from the pristine Butterfly Beach during your stay. Surf, swim, watch the sunset and stroll the beach at your leisure. There's no need to pile in the car or navigate to find the best stretch of sand, because it's right there at your feet.

Welcoming Amenities Especially for Kids

Beth Shea

Four Seasons The Biltmore Santa Barbara welcomes kids upon arrival by letting them choose from an adorable selection of Beanie Babies. Ty Warner, the creator of Beanie Babies owns the Resort, and this thoughtful touch makes kids feel comfortable and special right from the start. Kids will also love the "Fun in the Sun" toiletry kit waiting especially for them in their room. Made exclusively for the Resort, the kit contains dreamy-scented, soothing and natural bubble bath, conditioner and body wash.

You can also take advantage of the complimentary Kids for All Seasons program. Available for kids ages 5-12, the professionally run program keeps kiddos entertained and happy while you're on a date, at the Spa or enjoying some me-time. Hours: during the festive season, 7 days a week 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Off-season, Sat. only, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., peak season, 7 days a week, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Luxurious & Comfortable Rooms

Beth Shea

The guest rooms are impeccable, equal parts luxurious and cozy, and decorated with a combination of modern elegance and Spanish colonial style. We loved the spacious Jungle Room that includes a furnished outdoor terrace in a garden setting with soothing fountains. Some Jungle Rooms come with additional connecting rooms to accommodate families who need more space. Suites, bungalows and villas are also available, depending on the size of room you need and your budget.

Bike Rentals on Property

Beth Shea

For a nominal fee, you can rent bikes from the Spa right on property and take one (or more) of several scenic and memorable bike paths from the Resort. We recommend the 3 mile coastal bike path that runs from the Resort to the harbor and downtown's State Street. They offer an array of bikes and beach cruisers to suit your whole family, from kid-sized to adult-sized, and they include helmets, bottled water, bike locks and bike maps.

Also good to know: the Resort offers complimentary, continuous shuttle service on Fridays (4-9 p.m.) and Saturdays (1-9 p.m.) to and from downtown Santa Barbara, with drop off and pick up service from any location within a five-mile radius of the Resort. Go enjoy shopping on nearby State Street without having to worry about parking.

Delicious Dining with Ocean Views

Beth Shea

Dine on local and fresh, organic, Italian-inspired California-coastal cuisine and soak in opulent ocean and island views at the Resort's Bella Vista restaurant, where kids ages 5 and younger eat free. You may get extra lucky and spy seals or dolphins splashing about in the distance as you enjoy your meal.

Whether you're in the mood for the Santa Barbara Harbour Seafood Platter, the fresh house-made pasta dishes or the Portobello Piccata, there's a dish to delight everyone and to accommodate any dietary needs on Bella Vista's menu.

Young diners will surely find their perfect meal on the extensive kids' menu (for ages 5-12) which includes items ranging from waffles, pancakes and breakfast burritos to start the day to all day offerings like a kid-spin on a steak salad, fried chicken sandwich, veggie burger or skinless salmon. Eye-popping dessert options for kids include a decorate your own cupcake platter with assorted toppings and an ooey-gooey brownie sundae

We appreciated all of the delicious vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options that were available on both the kids' menu and regular menus.

Bella Vista is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Food Prepared Especially for Kids & A Heavenly Buffet

Beth Shea

Treat the fam to the Biltmore Champagne Sunday Brunch and you'll all think you're in heaven. This buffet-style brunch includes bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys as well as endless decadent dessert works of art and savory options at sushi stations, omelette and soup bars and so much more. At $85/person, it's worth every penny. There's even a table dedicated to kid diners that's full of fare like chicken tenders, fruit skewers, PB&J sandwiches, grilled cheese and Jello.

Don't miss the Little Chef Experience! Offered daily, kids ages 5-12 can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Resort Kitchen, enjoy a meet-and-greet with the chefs, cupcake decorating, and they'll get a chef hat and apron! $40/per child––perfect for young foodies.

Pickleball & Tennis Courts

Beth Shea

Get sporty with your crew and reserve a complimentary pickleball or tennis court via the Resort's concierge. If your kiddo's can't quite swing it for tennis yet, pickleball is a super fun option on a smaller court with larger paddles that make it easier to get the ball over the net.

Additional Resort activities to keep you all entertained include croquet and a putting green.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Beth Shea

Consider The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's temporary exhibit, Garden Casitas: Playhouses Designed with Nature in Mind (running now through Feb. 29, 2020) a must-see! Kids will love exploring six playhouses created by local designers that are constructed using plant-based materials. Shown above is the Big-eared Woodrat House. Each house has an informational plaque by it with fun facts such as: "big-eared woodrats (Neotoma macrotis) are nocturnal and forage for leaves, plants, and seeds during the night. If they come across anything shiny or cool-looking, they will carry it back to their nests for display." Kids will delight in all of the playhouses they can climb through and explore. It's an unbeatable way to spend an afternoon.

Even if you don't make it in time to catch this exhibit, a visit to this Botanic Garden is a peaceful family outing that's not to be missed. Here you can roam through towering Redwoods, follow the Canyon Trail across Mission Creek, enjoy an array of family-friendly programming and so much more!

Insider Info: The Breathtaker Alpine Coaster runs during all seasons, and you can ride on repeat during the days and evenings. It's the perfect kidtainment (and let's be honest—adults love it, too) during Thursday Farm-to-Table evenings while parent's enjoy live music and local fare at leisure.

Snowmass Base Village

S. Massey

2019 is the first summer season of the $600 million Snowmass Base Village project. The Base Village Plaza—where you’ll find an ice rink during the winter and an open lawn for playing games, taking a community yoga class, or learning to slackline during warmer months—is home to the new Limelight Hotel, The Collective Snowmass (the Base Village’s new community center which—when completed in 2020—will have restaurants, a pub, and an epic new kids’ game room), and The Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center (a multi-level childcare facility that in the summer is home to Camp Aspen Snowmass, where kids ages 12 & under can try age-appropriate adventures, such as downhill biking, rock climbing, fishing, rafting, rocket building, mountainboarding, arts and crafts, hiking, overnight campouts, and ropes courses).

Insider Info: The Limelight Hotel's five-story indoor climbing wall is the tallest of its kind in Colorado, and it's open to the public. And for heaven's sake, whatever you do, don't miss the opportunity to grab a crepe from The Crepe Shack by Mawa's Kitchen, just off the village plaza.

Lost Forest

Debuting last summer, the Lost Forest is accessible from Base Village Plaza by taking the Elk Camp Gondola, and includes a new Breathtaker Alpine Coaster, a Canopy Run Zipline Tour, a Treeline Trial Challenge Course and a Rugged Ascent Climbing Wall. Spend a morning, a day, or several days getting lost (and found) in the Lost Forest.

Insider Info: The Canopy Run Zipline includes eight ziplines and three sky bridges at heights of 90 feet in the forest canopy. The course is progressive, starting out easy and culminating in a 1,300-foot double-zipline that you can soar down with a pal.

Snowmass Biking

S. Massey

Snowmass offers over 90 miles of some of Colorado’s best biking trails, including lift-served downhill and cross country trails, a Bike Park (sign them up for a clinic before turning the kiddos loose on the jumps, bumps, and slopes of this challenging park), the Snowmass Loop—28 miles of single track combining over 10 different trails, and over 40 miles of paved trail that runs along the nearby Roaring Fork River.

Insider Info: For an easy to moderate (mainly) downhill ride, bike from Snowmass to Woody Creek Tavern, a local gathering place where you can grab a burger or guac and relax among locals—and oftentimes, celebrities.

Snowmass Hiking

Snowmass Tourism

With only a ride up the Elk Camp Gondola and Elk Camp chairlift, families can find stunning views and plenty of trails for every level of hiker. Or, families can go on a free guided hike by Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), where they can learn about the nearby ice age discovery in Ziegler’s Reservoir, or about the wildflowers that bloom in meadows and forests.

Insider Info: Some of the most photographed peaks in North America—the Maroon Bells—are just a hop, skip, and jump away from Snowmass. And while warm weather means they're accessible via a bus tour, you can also hike the Summit Trail (trailhead located just beyond the Elk Camp Restaurant) to the top of Elk Camp, where you'll enjoy an unique perspective of the Maroon Bells.

Snowmass Fishing

Never flyfished? No problem. Colorado waterways around Snowmass are so abundant with fish, you'll be hard-pressed not to reel one in. Increase your chances (and enjoyment) by learning from a local guide, who will not only take you to the best fishing holes, but who can also keep your lines untangled and flies tied so that you can focus on your cast in the area's Gold Medal fly fishing waters.

Insider Info: Aspen Flyfishing can arrange float trips or bank trips for families, providing full- and half-day experiences with local, knowledgeable guides. They even offer a shorter version of their half-day wade trip for kids ages 10-14, and can take the younger ones to a stocked pond for an easier catch.

Snowmass Whitewater Rafting

Heidi Gollub

Whether you’re looking for Class I or Class IV rapids, you’ll find them within a stone’s throw of Snowmass. Rafting can easily be arranged through Blazing Adventures, which is conveniently located in Snowmass, for expeditions to Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers.

Insider Info: Not sure you want to spend your time on the river in a boat? Try kayaking or Stand Up Paddle Boarding, instead, which can also be arranged through Blazing Adventures in Snowmass. Just remember, these are snow-melted rivers, and they are seriously cold!

Snowmass Rodeo

S. Massey

Just a bike ride, walk, or a 5 minute drive from Snowmass Base Village is the Snowmass Rodeo, which happens every Wednesday evening in the summer. In addition to the bull riding, roping, and barrel racing you’ll see during the official rodeo, your kiddos can try their hand at the mechanical bull, bounce in the inflatable, meet the horses (and their cowboys and cowgirls), and practice roping their own steel steers. Dinner and drinks are available for purchase, and there’s a campfire sing-a-long following most rodeos in the summer.

When to Go

Snowmass Tourism

With some of the world’s best and most hassle-free skiing in the winter (did we mention that 95% of all lodging is ski-in/ ski-out or slopeside in Snowmass?), and warmer weather sunshine that outpaces the number of sunny days in California and Florida, there’s really no bad time to take the family to Snowmass. However, you can anchor a trip around one of Snowmass’ incredible festivals—from Yoga on the Mountain in July to Jazz Aspen Snowmass in September—to experience even more of the unique vibe that makes Snowmass a must. Check out the entire list of Snowmass festivals and events, here.

Insider Info: Yoga on the Mountain Festival, which sits squarely in the middle of summer, is just the right event to experience total-family wellness. Kids will love the silent disco, where you dance the night away with multiple channels of music to choose from on a headset.
