Cherry-picking season is a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of deal. If you’re thinking of picking some fresh cherries for your favorite pie or jam recipe, you’ll have to head out from around mid-June to early July. There are a number of fantastic farms in the NYC area where you can pick your own cherries—and cherries are the perfect size for tiny hands to pick. Farms recommend coming earlier rather than later, as it’s picking while supplies last. (Your best bet is to check a farm’s social media feeds before heading out.) Cherries are typically gone by early July, but you can still pick your own berries at one of these farms near NYC, and pick your own flowers at these farms. Just can’t get enough of farm life? Some Tips Before You Pick

  • There are many varieties of cherries, but they fall into two main categories: sweet and tart. Ripening times may vary for each type of cherry, so make sure you're going at the right time for the type of cherry you want.
  • Most of these farms also sell fresh produce, various types of food, freshly baked goods, ciders, jams, and more
  • Remind little ones to be courteous: No shaking of branches, climbing trees, or tasting of fruit as you pick
  • Outside bags are generally not permitted. You have to use the provided picking containers
  • Dogs are never allowed into the orchards and fruit-growing areas (with the exception of service animals), though some farms allow animals outside planted areas, like in designated picnic spots.
  • All listed dates are predictions. Always check the sites website or facebook, or call ahead to double-check the U-Pick details for the day you're thinking of going.

Family-owned by a family that's been involved with agriculture since 1892, Lawrence Farms Orchards is a charming place to visit for cherry-picking and a picnic (if you plan to picnic, you'll need to buy your fruits first). As always, June-July is the time to pick sweet and sour cherries, but the farm also has a huge selection of other U-Pick fruits and veggies from June through October, including peaches, pears, raspberries, peppers, eggplant, and so many more. Make sure to take a gander at the farm's spectacular show chickens and adorable goats, and check out the hay bale maze and “Little Village” — a small-scale replica of an old-fashioned New England farm town.

Good to know: Admission is $5 per person (children under two are free), and there are season passes available if you plan on coming back to pick any of their other offerings. Non-cash methods of payment are accepted at an additional 4% fee from your final total.

Prospect Hill Orchards
From mid-June to July 4th, Prospect Hill Orchards' nine acres of sour red or sweet red and white cherries will be ripe for the picking. There are over 10 different varieties available, from the extremely sweet Heidelfingen to the bright red tart Montmorency. No appointments are needed. You can also buy some homemade goods to be delivered, including homemade jam, granola, and dried apples.

Good to know: Credit cards are accepted as long as they have a chip. You can catch a ride on a tractor from the parking lot up to the cherry hill.

Fishkill Farms
Fishkill Farms is one of the only U-Pick farms in NY where you can find organic cherries. In fact, all the farm's vegetables, berries and eggs are certified organic, as well as a third of the apple orchard (the rest is ecologically responsible). Rose Hill Farm
Since 2018, the farm has completely changed the way it operates, using a holistic approach that emphasizes the health of the land and ecosystem. The result is way more cherry varieties than you probably knew existed. Sweet cherries are plentiful and are awesome for fresh eating, freezing for later, or making smoothies out of. Rose Hill recommends using the sour types for baking, canning, fermenting, and infusing, instead. The grounds are open for picnicking and fire pits, and you'll often find live music, food pop-ups, events, classes, and more entertainment in this lively spot.

Good to know: You're allowed to bring your own food for a picnic in certain areas. If you decide to stop by The Taproom for food and drinks for the adults, outdoor seating is available but you're also welcome to bring your own camping chairs or picnic blankets and stay the afternoon.

Cherry Picking in New Jersey

Terhune Orchards
Terhune Orchards encourages visitors not to wait until "next weekend" to pick cherries, as the season is short and will be over before you know it! You'll likely be able to pick sweet cherries starting mid-June and tart ones beginning in late June. Plan to make a whole day out of it, because there's plenty to keep kids curious and occupied here. Kids (and adults) of all ages can visit the barnyard to see sheep, goats, ducks, geese, and chickens, while kids six and under can ride on pedal tractors. Head out for a walk on the farm trail discovery walk, which takes you on about a mile-long walk through an impressive variety of natural locations, including a pasture, orchard, large pond, meadow, and even a forest. Adults can also enjoy a drink at the winery on weekends 12-5 p.m., and catch some live music by the firepit.

Good to know: Terhune often holds classes (on topics like herbs and gardening) and live music. You can also sign up your children for "Read and Pick Tuesdays," a program that combines fruit picking with an educational and fun activity meant to teach kids about the farm. The cherries Read and Pick Tuesday is scheduled for June 14, and registration is $12 per child (one accompanying adult can come along for no additional charge).

When people think of kid-food, choices like mac and cheese and chicken fingers are often top-of-mind. Yes, those foods are delicious and often well-accepted by little foodies, and I feed them to my daughter on occasion as well.

Being a registered dietitian and mom, I try and find a balance between serving my five-year-old foods that she loves (brownies make the top of her list) and foods that I know she needs for health benefits (and she also loves). And while my list of “mom-approved” foods is long, there is one that is always prioritized: Seafood.

My daughter gets seafood on her dinner plate two times a week—the amount that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends children consume. But my rationale doesn’t end at simply wanting to follow the guidance of the USDA. Over the years, more and more data has come out that highlights just how impactful two servings of seafood per week can be to little ones—enough to convince me that it is a must-have in my home. 

Eating Seafood Helps Support Strong Growing Bones

When kids are chowing down on seafood options like salmon, they are getting a boost of vitamin D, a nutrient that supports bone health and is not found in many other foods. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which can in turn support healthy bones and teeth.

Additionally, the lean protein that seafood provides helps support bone health as well as your child’s overall growing body.  Think of the salmon, tuna, or shrimp on your kiddo’s plate as bone-booster during the time in their life that they need it most. 

Eating Seafood Can Help Boost Brain Development 

When they say you are what you eat, that rule certainly applies to brain health. And when specifically looking at kids, eating seafood has been shown to directly impact their brainpower.

When choosing seafood options that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like farm-raised salmon, your child may end up literally having a bigger brain—which is a good thing! Also, data suggests that kids who eat fish at least once per week may do better in school. Fish consumption has also been linked to higher IQs (about 4.8 points higher than non-fish eaters) and improved reading skills. So, along with making sure your kid gets quality sleep and does their homework, including fatty fish in their diet can be an important part of their weekly routine to help support their academic progress. 

Seafood Supports a Healthy Immune System

In these times, supporting a healthy immune system is at the forefront of everyone’s minds—especially since kids are back in school and around all of the potential “ick”. While there are tons of miracle immunity supplements on the market, one overlooked booster is seafood.

Eating seafood options that contain healthy fats and vitamin D like shrimp and salmon have been shown to reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system in the body. 

Some varieties of seafood also provide protein, zinc, and vitamin A—all nutrients that play an important role in immune health. So, that salmon patty that you are feeding your family may be the ticket to keeping them healthy during cold and flu season! 

How to Get Kids to Eat Seafood

Although the benefits of eating seafood are robust, kids are unfortunately only about 5% of children eat the recommended 2 servings per week of seafood. Hopefully with a little knowledge and know-how, parents will start serving more seafood on their dinner table for a slew of reasons. 

Shopping the seafood counter (or frozen section) can feel a bit overwhelming, so here are some tricks to buying the safest, best-quality options. Choose seafood with integrity by looking for the BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices) certified seal. I also recommend serving sustainably raised varieties that are low in mercury and high in omega-3 fats, like farmed salmon from Chile. Opting for seafood that is low in mercury, such as salmon, pollock, flounder, cod, tilapia, and shrimp is particularly important for pregnant women and children. 

When feeding your kids seafood, it is important to think about the fact that people (especially children) eat with their eyes first. In other words, the food needs to look good. While plopping a raw oyster on your child’s plate may not be a hit, offering some grilled shrimp with a dipping sauce can be a fun and appealing meal for your little one to enjoy. And making a twist on some classic favorites, like a salmon burger instead of a beef option, can be a simple swap that loads your child up with important nutrients. Lastly, be sure to offer seafood starting at an early to help your child develop a life-long habit that can play a huge role in their overall health and brain development.

The answer? A healthy eating pattern, as well as other healthy lifestyle habits, can be the invisible armor in your family’s crusade against COVID-19 and other illnesses. While a specific food or nutrient cannot prevent or reduce your risk of COVID-19, a healthy diet of nutritious foods can give your body the extra protection that it needs.

What can you do to maintain your family’s shiny and sturdy immunity armor during this time? 

The secret is in nutritious, whole foods! Make it a habit to build your grocery lists and plan both your meals and snacks to include fruit, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. These foods have their own “superpowers” to support a healthy immune system that will be ready to work for you when you need it most. In fact, they have vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as zinc, which are especially plentiful in fruits and vegetables. 

Schools across the country have started to take more fun and creative approaches that encourage students to enjoy fruits and vegetables at lunchtime which can support their overall health and happiness. In addition to promoting a healthy immune system, a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables can also contribute to positive moods—who couldn’t use more positivity during this difficult time?

When you learn more about how eating healthy foods can make you feel better and protect your health, then you can better understand why eating them is so important. Try adding some of these mood and immunity-boosting foods to your meals:

  • Vitamin A, found in sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, and kale, boosts immunity but can also contribute to healthy skin and hair which can help many of us feel more confident.
  • Vitamin C, plentiful in citrus fruits, tomatoes, strawberries, melon, and tomatoes, can aid our memory, will keep us smart and also works overtime for good immune health.
  • Vitamin D, commonly found in fatty fish, eggs, and milk, is also prominent in mushrooms.  This vitamin plays a role in mood regulation keeping us calm and happy during anxious times.
  • Vitamin E, plentiful in nuts and seeds, as well as avocado, red sweet pepper, mango, and green leafy vegetables, keeps our immune system and brain humming which can keep us alert while we fight off illness.
  • Zinc is best absorbed from animal sources but can also be found in plant foods such as beans, celery, green peas, mushrooms, and spinach.  It aids in muscle building to keep us strong and also contributes to our immune health.

Eating well, in addition to practicing other healthy behaviors, is a prescription for good health. Adding exercise, good sleep habits, and stress reduction techniques to a healthy diet may be just what your family needs to stay healthy and happy.

Well, kids…it has been an interesting time to be alive. That is. for. dang. sure. When COVID-19 first made the news I wasn’t too worried. I thought it was only a few cases and far away! In China! I was glad that we weren’t still living in Shanghai, but I thought it was contained and not very worrisome. And then it started popping up in the United States. I grew worried.

I went last week to Miami where I met with my surgeon. She looked over the labs that I get every other month and noticed that my Vitamin A, E, D & Iron were low. This was frustrating because I thought that all of my levels were normal but she found some labs that were not included in my online database. Because I have short-bowel syndrome my body has a hard time absorbing nutrients from a diet a person with all of their small intestine would have. I probably only get about 1/2 the nutrients you get. My food digests in my system in about 12 hours whereas the normal person takes 24-72 hours. Don’t tell me how I know this, but it involves corn and I’ll just leave it at that.

So why do I tell you this? Due to my condition, my immune system is compromised. In the past two years, I have been hospitalized 19 times and have had about 15 surgeries/procedures. I have had pneumonia three times and various infections due to my body having a low level of resistance to viruses and bacteria.

At my appointment, I told the receptionist that I had a lingering cough. No fever and no body aches just a cough. They led me to a small tent outside of the entrance where they monitored me for 20 minutes taking my blood pressure and temperature frequently. I was surprised but it was also reassuring that they were doing what they could to prevent the spread of the virus.

I asked my Doctor how she felt about the virus and if I should be worried. She looked at me and nonchalantly said, “Well for you, this would kill you.” She’s a peach, let me tell you. She really gives you the warm and fuzzies.

In the news, you have read that the people that are most at-risk are people that are old and those who have underlying health conditions. This is me. I am that person. I am the one that would get this virus and I would not be able to fight it. I have been in that hospital, I have been on that ventilator. I have had a 106.7 fever and I have been so depleted I could not find a reason to live.  BUT through countless prayers, fasts and therapy sessions I have found that reason. My family. They are what is the most important and I want to be here on earth to see Samantha finally learn how to tie her shoes, I want to see Preston using complete sentences. I want to be there for my kids for every break-up, wedding and school dance they go to.

I am the reason that you are staying at home. I am the reason why you are homeschooling your children. I am the reason why you are now forced to work on a laptop while sitting on a bed. I am the reason that you have been forced to play Candy Land for the 986th time today. You are isolating yourself because you want to save me, and I adore you for it.  I have been able to see many beautiful things during this isolation period. A neighbor posted on the Facebook page that she would run errands for those who are compromised. Beautiful. A sunset that I enjoyed because I had to go outside to get fresh air. Beautiful. The nurses and doctors who show up to work not knowing if they will come into contact with the virus but to save people on a daily basis. Beautiful. A man in Spain was leading a rooftop jazzercise class that people could join in by looking out their windows and following along. Beautiful. People are sharing their talents by providing kids online resources for free. Beautiful. Celebrities are taping themselves reading children’s books and posting them online. Beautiful. In Paris, people open their windows and applaud medical professionals for keeping them safe. Beautiful. My neighborhood is having everyone draw sidewalk chalk masterpieces so that children can go on a scavenger hunt on their walk. Beautiful. This morning I sat and played LEGOS with my kids because we didn’t have anywhere to be. Beautiful.

If this isolation has taught me anything it has taught me to be still. To be present with my children. To prioritize and assess the needs of my family. I encourage us to spend this time to relax. The world is becoming increasingly distracted and busy. Be still. Have a diet coke. Take a nap. Watch too much Netflix. Play that board game you haven’t opened since getting it at Christmas. Bake the cake. Read the book. Do these things because you care and you want to help. And wash your hands while you’re at it!

So please, I beg you, stay home. Protect me. Protect Grandma Sally. Protect Shannon who is fighting cancer. Protect Danny who has type 2 diabetes. Protect Gina who has a heart defect. Do it for us. Old Navy can wait.

We’ve hit the ground running in 2020 and getting my family’s health into tip-top shape is at the top of my goals for this new year, new decade. I do my best to make healthy, well-balanced meals for my husband and three kids but honestly, it’s not always a success (and my middle child could really survive solely on white bread, ramen and cereal if he had the choice). The after-school hours are busy and sometimes I have to resort to quick meals or pizza (without a vegetable in sight).

For some reason, the habit of taking a daily vitamin isn’t something I’ve been able to incorporate into my family’s routine in the past. I’d go a few weeks with my kids taking a morning vitamin on a semi-regular basis and somehow that would peter out and the vitamin bottle would end up collecting dust in the back of our cabinet.
