How to Teach Little Kids about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

21 Places to Visit to Understand Race in America

26 African-American History Books to Read with Your Kids

We have a lot of holidays coming around the bend. First up, Valentine’s Day! But Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, not to mention birthdays—they’ll all be here before you know it. So many gift-giving holidays, so few ideas that go beyond the everyday ordinary. Wait, hold up! We found a Chicago-based start-up that will create a personalized, radio-quality song designed with your loved one in mind. Read on to hear how Songfinch will connect you with a songwriter who will record a special song featuring all the inside jokes, nicknames, stories and wishes you want captured within the notes, making for a memorable gift literally like no other.

Songfinch's Personal Story

Founded by a team of Chicago music and technology veterans Josh Kaplan, Rob Lindquist and John Williamson, Songfinch's goal is to capture moments and stories in song. “We, as people, create story-worthy moments every day, and more and more, these experiences are being valued above things that can be purchased,” shares Williamson, “There’s no medium that speaks more directly to the soul than music. By leveraging the power of music, we’re creating an entirely unique approach to the gifting space, and we’re really excited to help people connect with others in new ways.”

Choose Your Own (Song) Adventure

You'll complete what Songfinch calls a "story guide" providing details on the person, live event or experience you want to hear recreated in music mode. Your story guide can include anything you'd like, from the oddball characteristics that make your loved one oh-so-unique to the pee-in-your-pants memories that capture the special moments you've shared. You'll also set the particular mood or vibe the song should capture, be it peppy, romantic, jazzy. Then choose the type of vocalist preferred: maybe you're looking for a birthday rap with a blues-y overtone or a crooner-style wedding anniversary ballad.

We tested out this amazing new service and here’s how it works!

Personal Story from Our Writer, Amy Bizzarri

I chose to create a song to gift my music-loving daughter, Chiara, on her 7th birthday. I shared some insider details on her bright personality as well as all the things that make her happy: playing with her dog outside, traveling, playing the piano.

A Match Made in Musical Heaven

Songfinch will handpick the perfect music artist (from their team of 200+ vetted songwriters) to craft and professionally record a song. One week later, you’ll receive a downloadable/shareable web page known as a “Story Homepage” where you’ll find your love brought to life in song.

Amy's Review of the Experience

We were matched with artist Katie Stump, who recorded a beautiful ballad that truly captured my love for my daughter, Chiara. I have to admit that when I first listened, tears welled up in my eyes! I surprised my daughter by playing her song after school on our car radio. Her reaction: At first, her jaw dropped. She simply couldn't believe she was listening to a song made just for her! Soon she was singing along and making attempts to play the song on her piano. Months later, it remains a top requested song in our already musical household.

How Much for All These Feels?

The cost? Just $249 for a song that will be cherished by your family forever! (Note: Songfinch is offering a discount right now, $199/song.)

"One of the most unique aspects of Songfinch is that the product comes from your heart." explains co-founder Rob Lindquist. "It allows you to intimately share your memories and feelings. . . something that tends to be a challenge for people, especially in a one-to-one setting. Being able to have those types of personal details created into a beautiful piece of music, it seems to speak better than any other gift out there.”

Slater & Jessie Return to the Max in Mario Lopez’s New Instagram Video

It looks like The Lion King and Aladdin aren’t the only Disney faves getting a live-action reboot. Recent reports set The Little Mermaid at the center of Disney’s soon-to-be filmed remakes, and rumors are swirling that one role in the under-the-sea adaptation is already filled!

According to Vanity Fair, Melissa McCarthy may nab the role of Ursula. The actress isn’t the first celeb rumored to have a shot at the Disney villain role.

Superstars such as Lizzo, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler surfaced as early front-runners for the part. But now, if the McCarthy rumors are true, these would-be vocalist villains won’t get a shot at remaking the Disney classic.

While there are no other cast member announcements as of yet, Rob Marshall is set to direct the film. Hamilton creator/star Lin-Manuel Miranda will reportedly work with original score composer Alan Menken on a new slate of songs for the rebooted flick.

As of now, there’s no information from Disney on a production schedule or release date.

The Mic connects to your car stereo via Bluetooth and enables your voice to project from your car speakers so that you can cruise down the street to the beat of your own vocals. The Mic can also stream karaoke music from a variety of apps, like Spotify, Pandora or YouTube, so that you can have your back-up tunes blasting along with your vocals.

“From The Late Late Show segments to the stand-alone series, Carpool Karaoke is known and loved around the world,” said Veronica Hart, EVP, Global Franchise Management, CBS Consumer Products. “We’re thrilled to partner with Singing Machine to enable fans to personally experience the joy and fun of the show on their own – at home or while stuck in traffic with friends.”

The Mic, which retails for $49.99, will be available for purchase sometime this summer, just in time to put the top down and go for a musical drive.

In honor of Father’s Day, Red Tricycle chatted with two rock star dads, Chris Ballew and Drew Holloway, about fatherhood, PEPSapalooza, and making kid-friendly music that doesn’t make parents want to pull their hair out.

Chris Ballew (bottom photo), more widely-known as vocalist and bass-guitarist of The Presidents of the United States of America, is releasing his fourth kindie-rock album under the name Casper Babypants. Sing Along is due out September 20th.

Our other dad, Drew Holloway, when not blowing pint-sized minds with rock, is an elementary school teacher. Along with two other teachers-turned-part-time rockers, Jack Forman and Daron Henry, Recess Monkey (top photo) has produced a whopping six albums together, and are releasing their seventh, Flying, on June 21st.

You can see both bands perform at PEPSapalooza on Saturday, August 13th, 2011. PEPSapalooza is a family-oriented music festival supporting PEPS, Program for Early Parent Support. PEPS strives to provide a community network for parents of infants and young children that will enable them to seek parenting advice and support.

RT: Why Do Dads Rocks?

Chris: “Dads rock the same as MOMS! Being a Dad means the same as being a mom…to help your child learn to know themselves so that they are equipped to make sound decisions on their own someday.”

Drew: Dads rock because they turn their weber grills to eleven! I know my dad would be proud of my flank steak and asparagus :)

RT: What’s your best parenting advice?

Chris: Learn to be empathetic and let your children know that you hear them when they talk to you.

Drew: My best advice is to listen more than you talk, alot more. Oh, and always have lots of snacks on hand, snacks are good.

RT: What’s your children’s favorite song you sing to them?

Chris: A new one from the new Caspar album SING ALONG! called My Flea Has Dogs. They laugh every time!

Drew: Our favorite song to sing is usually the one we’re making up together.

RT: What’s your favorite thing about doing PEPSapalooza?

Chris: The sea of happy baby faces in the sun and the ice-cold beer after the set!

Drew: My favorite thing about doing PEPSapalooza is the hose! If the hose is on that means it’s hot and sunny!

RT: What makes PEPSapalooza a great event?

Chris: The opportunity to support an organization that is so closely aligned with my goal to reduce stress for new parents.

Drew: PEPSapalooza is a great event because its’ raising money and spirits- All in the name of family. The only thing better than seeing kids sing and dance- Is seeing them do it along side their parents!

Happy Father’s Day Chris and Drew!
