The fireworks on the National Mall are one of the most spectacular shows in town. Set against the Washington Monument, there are a couple key vantage points for optimal viewing (check out our insider tips below), but a number of other area fireworks are also stunning (and many promise lesser crowds). Whether you want to celebrate America’s birthday in our nation’s capitol or you’re looking to venture further out of the city, we’ve found the best places to catch a dazzling display of fireworks in Washington, DC and beyond.

In the City

National Mall Fireworks
The National Mall becomes the ultimate amphitheater every July 4th.  Grab your picnic blanket and park your family on any patch of grass  on the National Mall and you’ll have a front row seat to the show. This is the most crowded place to watch the celebration, so pack some snacks to help distract overtired kids (it can take up to an hour to leave the area). If you’re looking for something more low-key, you can still catch this awe-inspiring show beyond the Mall.

For a quiet, sensory-friendly evening: head to the National Cathedral. Boasting the highest point in the city, you can take the DC fireworks without all the noise. Another high vantage point can be found at Cardozo High School near U St. This is a hot spot with locals that guarantees a low-key vibe.

For an active evening: spend the night at The Wharf where you can have dinner, grab a s’mores kit  for dessert and gather around the fire, watch fireworks.

For a unique experience: For a dazzling view, watch the fireworks on the Potomac. You don’t need to be on a boat for this view. The 14th Street Bridge, the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Arlington Memorial Bridge all are great spots to take in the July 4th celebrations. There are also a number of Firework Cruise options including the Signature Dinner Cruise by CityExperiences and the Alexandria City Water Taxi and for those wanting an intimate evening with just the fam, private charters, like this tour by sailboat from Reflections DC.

MARYLAND

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Spectacular
Immerse yourself in Revolutionary Americana in the city of Baltimore. Spend some time at Fort McHenry where the bombardment by the British inspired Francis Scott Key to pen “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” better known today as the “Star Spangled Banner.” You can also visit the home of the seamstress who made the garrison flag made famous by Key’s song.  More ways celebrate Independence Day include live music in the Inner Harbor amphitheater starting at 4 p.m , a live spoken word performance of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” at Rash Field Park at 7:39 p.m and  the main event—fireworks—over the Inner Harbor at 9:30 p.m. Event details.

An All-Day Celebration in Frederick

The fireworks show starts at dusk and while you can see the fireworks from most areas in the park, some parts may be obstructed. For optimal viewing, head towards the Fleming Ave. Swimming Pool, the Frederick High School lawn or the Carillon Area of Baker Park. Event details.

Fireworks. And More Fireworks in Columbia
If there is no such thing as too many fireworks for you and your crew, Howard County might be the 4th of July roadtrip you need this year. Boasting the largest display in the area, this fireworks show goes on for a solid 20 minutes (longer than the National Mall!). Live music starts at 6 p.m. and the grand finale in the sky starts at 9:20 p.m. Event details.

VIRGINIA

Vienna’s Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks
This NOVA suburb is Virginia’s answer to the Howard County Display. For over twenty minutes, the sky over Vienna is illuminated with one of the area’s most epic firework shows. The evening starts with a performance by the United States Navy Concert Band at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks (estimated to be 9:30 p.m.). Event details.

Find a Secret Beach in Gloucester

Nicole S. via yelp

Families with tots will appreciate this quiet little beach with its crescent shape. Half Moon Beach’ sandy shores are bookended by large boulders, so tiny beach bums can’t wander too far and are always easy to spot. Remember to pack cash to pay for parking, and hit the nearby family-owned snack shack, The Cupboard, when hunger strikes. Lifeguards are on duty through Labor Day.

Take a Ferry to Spectacle Island

Because riding the ferry is always an adventure, take the kids for a nature-filled day on Spectacle Island. Spend time swimming in the shallow waters next to the dock, or just bring your blanket to enjoy a family picnic with a spectacular view of the city. Lifeguards are on duty through Labor Day if your kids want to brave the cool water. And if not, searching for seaglass (remember to leave it there) is always a great second option, as is hiking the trails that weave around the island.

When it comes to easy beach trips just outside the city, it doesn’t get easier than America’s first public beach, Revere Beach. Whether you take the T or load the kids into the car to head up the coast, you’ll find miles of sandy beach to explore. We love the free educational programming and Piping Plover Summer StoryWalk families can enjoy when they visit. Plan your trip the first weekend in August to marvel at the International Sand Sculpture Festival entries. It’s sure to inspire your mini builders to be like Olivia.

The Scoop on Our Favorite Boston Ice Cream Shops

Best Boston Hikes to Take with the Kids

Living in SoCal is a dream––given its beauty, abundant sunshine and fantastic outdoor activities. While staying home is the new required norm, once we can safely venture out again, we’re looking forward to getting back into our fine city to do all the things we love. Read on for 12 things we can’t wait to do again, as well as a few ways to stay occupied indoors in the meantime!

NeONBRAND via Unsplash

Hit the beach! We'll never again gripe about finding parking and lugging all the sand toys and snacks to set up camp at the beach with our kids. We want to build sand castles, splash in the waves, run up and down the coastline, boogie board and bask in the sunshine.

LEGOLAND California

Experience LEGO Movie World for the first time when it opens! Spend time at home watching The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, because this new land immerses you into the LEGO Movie universe and places you on the streets of Bricksburg. We can't wait to buckle up for the Masters of Flight ride, enjoy the rush of falling from Unikitty’s Disco Drop, explore Benny’s Play Ship, ride a fully reimagined carousel, and meet Emmet and all of his friends in Emmet’s Super Suite apartment!

In the meantime we'll keep busy at home doing LEGOLAND's Building Challenges

Beth Shea

Hit the road to meet up with and hug our favorite characters at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Pile into jeeps to ride Indiana Jones Adventure, slide into cars to race around Radiator Springs and cozy into boats to ride Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a Small World. Cheer and wave on the streets of Disneyland while watching the Magic Happens Parade. Wait in line for a sweet and refreshing Dole whip. Gather to watch fireworks above Sleeping Beauty's castle. Feel the magic again.

In the meantime, we'll be watching this virtual viewing of the Magic Happens Parade and enjoying this series of Learning & Activity Sheets from Disney, Pixar and National Geographic to tide us over.

Belmont Park

Yell "wheeee" on Belmont Park's Giant Dipper rollercoaster, stop in The Sweet Shoppe for some homemade fudge, and giggle til it hurts on the Tilt-A-Whirl.

San Diego Zoo

Catch up with our favorite animals at San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Take a peaceful journey on the Africa Tram to see how the rhinos are doing and ride the Skyfari Aerial Tram for a bird's eye view of the Zoo.

In the meantime, we'll be enjoying San Diego Zoo's virtual spring break activities, watching all our favorite creatures on the live zoo cams, and exploring the butterflies via a livestream of Butterfly Jungle.

Balboa Park Conservancy

Take several spins on the Balboa Park carousel. We'll hop on a different animal every time! A jumping horse, an ostrich, a pig, a lion, a camel... all the creatures!

Beth Shea

Hike down to the water at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Breathe in the gorgeous ocean views while pausing for shade beneath the beautiful Torrey Pine trees.

Cheer on the San Diego Padres at a home baseball game. But first, stopping at KidsFest before a Sunday game to watch our kids jump in the bounce houses, get their face painted and get a balloon animal. We also can't wait to dig in to Cardiff Crack Nachos and chomp on The Slugger Dog while we root for the home team.

Beth Shea

Climb aboard our favorite locomotives at Poway Midland Railroad for a fun trip around Poway Park. Taste our way through the neighboring Poway farmer's market to pick a fresh bouquet of spring flowers, relish a fresh baked croissant, and fill our baskets with a bounty of fruits and vegetables from local farmers.

Kathy S. via Yelp

Decisions, decisions! We eagerly anticipate choosing between all of the amazingly clever and unique ice cream flavors on a monthly rotation at Salt & Straw. We think we'll order a double, or even a triple scoop just so we can make up for lost time! We'll know the true meaning of "we all scream for ice cream."

Beth Shea

Soak up some serene nature therapy at the San Diego Botanic Garden. We long to stroll among towering trees, marvel at exotic plants and flowers, climb up and explore Toni's Treehouse and watch our kids play outdoors in the Hamilton Children's Garden––pushing miniature boats down the mountain stream, and drawing in the art garden.

Wind our way through Balboa Park's museums. Behold the dinosaurs at the San Diego Natural History Museum, let our kids' imaginations soar at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, watch their minds light up at Fleet Science Center, and just relish the chance to walk through beautiful Balboa Park while museum-hopping. We also can't wait to share an order of Truffle Parm fries on a lunch stop at Panama 66.

Park Your Car & Bike Everywhere… Seriously.
One of the very best aspects of a family trip to Redondo Beach is that you can literally ride your bike everywhere… even with little ones. When you stay at Shade, you’re only about a five to ten minute bike ride away from Redondo Beach Pier, whale watching and water sport rentals, Seaside Lagoon, the beach… it’s all just a few short pedals of the bike up the road!

Redondo Beach is equipped with bike paths that have their own traffic signals for cyclists. You’ll feel safer that you and your kids aren’t riding on the same street as cars.

Go to Marina Bike Rentals (a three minute walk around the corner from Shade) to rent all types of bikes for your crew. They have kids bikes, cruisers, multi-speed bikes, tandem bikes, kid’s trailers, and Kazoo Tag-alongs that attach to the back of an adult bike for a kid to ride behind (shown above).

From Marina you can ride in either direction on a bike path: twenty miles north along The Strand as far as the Santa Monica Pier or south 2.25 miles through Redondo Beach.

Cycling around Redondo Beach is an added vacation perk that’s so much fun for kids and adults alike. No need to pile in and out of the car and look for/pay for parking.

Insider’s Tip: Be sure to ask the folks at Marina Bike Rentals to give you a basket to attach to your bike (for purchases you may make en route) and locks for when you arrive at your destination–– both are included with the rental fee.

Redondo Beach Pier
The Pier has old-fashioned appeal as it was originally built in 1889, and reconstructed in 1995. There are dozens of souvenir shops and food vendors and locals dub it a west coast “Coney Island” filled with novelties including funnel cakes, churros, popcorn and the freshest seafood in town.

Insider’s Tip: Enjoy free concerts on the Pier July-September and free movies on the boardwalk in June.

Visit the quirky, 70’s-era, Redondo Fun Factory on the Pier before it closes. Kids will love playing the vintage quarter arcade games (beat them at Pac-Man!), Skee-Ball and riding the Tilt-a-Whirl.

Whale Watching
Take the fam on a peaceful whale watching excursion on “The Indian,”a 65-foot, 42 passenger vessel at Redondo Beach Sportfishing. The friendly crew make the journey fun with their narration of the tour to spot Gray whales during their migration. You’ll probably catch sight of many dolphins and sea lions on the excursion too. An added bonus: along for the ride on each whale watch adventure is a trained Naturalist of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium/American Cetacean Society, who walks around the boat educating passengers about the marine life.

Insider’s Tip: Make sure everyone uses the restroom before boarding the boat. Excursions are three hours, minimum. Pack snacks and water to stay hydrated.
