Get ready to cool off at the best splash pads and water parks that San Diego has to offer

San Diego is one of the best cities in the country for families to while away those cherished summer days. Sure, there are great watering holes and some of the most stunning beaches around, but the city also features an incredible variety of splash pads, water parks, and aquatic centers that will thrill even the pickiest kiddos. We’ve put together a list of the absolute must-sees, must-dos, and must-splash spots so be sure to add them to your summer itinerary stat.

Waterfront Park

Open since 2014, Waterfront Park is the most significant recreational open space in downtown San Diego and a super special spot to hit up with your brood, especially during the toasty summer months. This 12-acre park is just a stone’s throw from the bay and is tailor made for a fun-filled family day with cool features like a large children’s play zone with great structures to climb and explore, as well as a giant interactive fountain that extends the length of green and has oodles of jets to spray littles. The fountain floor is rough and grippy so kids can romp around safely without worry of slipping.

Insider’s Tip: There’s also an expansive grassy area right by the fountain where you can lay towels, have picnics, and enjoy the breathtaking waterfront views. Additionally, if you you’d like to have a birthday party there, the picnic area near the children’s playground can be reserved.

Cost: Free
Jet Hours: Daily, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

San Diego Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is one of our absolute favorite places to bring family. During summer though, there’s a good chance kids will get super hot exploring all day so head to the Savanna Cool Zone in the Lion Camp play area. You’ll find mist spraying from palm trees and a big slippery turtle, lion, and crocodile that spout water.

Insider’s Tip: If you feel like your kids really want to get wet here, be sure to pack a swimsuit for them to change into
Hours: May 26 – Aug. 12, Mon. – Sun., 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Cost: 1-Day Pass when purchased online is $69 per adult (ages 12+) and $59 per kid (ages 3-11)

Poway Community Swim Center

The splash pad at the Poway Community Swim Center is always a summer fave for families. With a wide selection of geysers, overhead buckets, a water tunnel and more, the only problem you’ll have is getting kiddos to leave at the end of the day.

We also recommend checking out Inflatable Days at the swim center as well. Every Fri. from June 16 – Aug. 4, the pool features gigantic inflatables like the Magneetor or Swing & Slide for everyone to enjoy! Three one-hour sessions are available for jumpers and a swim test and daily admission are required. Wristbands for inflatable participation go on sale 30 min. prior to each time slot and spaces are limited to 25 jumpers per session.

Splash Pad Hours & Cost: Mon. – Thurs., 9:15 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Fri., from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m; and Sat. & Sun. 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Cost is $4 per adult and $3 per kid (for residents) and $8 per adult and $6 per kid (for non-residents)
Inflatable Hours & Cost: Fri., 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Cost is $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents

Whether your kiddos love the thrill of getting drenched by a bucket of water or prefer to whoop it up in the spray zone, this splash pad is tons of fun. Even more, there’s a 13-station exercise course if you want to squeeze in a quick workout, as well as rentable picnic areas and a campground if you want to make a whole night of it.

Hours: Daily, May 1 – Oct. 31, 9:30 a.m. – sunset

When you’re done, check out One Paseo across the street with lots of adorable shops and fab eateries and grab a bite for lunch.

Sprinklers, dump buckets, and loads of fun

As the temps are creeping up, an NYC park with a sprinkler where the kids can cool down is a lifesaver. New York is home to playgrounds and splash pads of all kinds, and you can find these refreshing spots of all shapes, sizes, themes, and intensity in every borough. We’ve rounded up our favorite playgrounds with water features in NYC, including parks for tiny tots, the best Central Park sprinklers, places to spend almost the whole day, and more! For more ways to keep cool, check out our favorite shady playgrounds, our picks of kid-friendly movie theaters and the best NYC museum shows for kids right now.

Pier 51 in Hudson River Park

Ahoy, mateys! A neighborhood favorite with river views, Hudson River Park’s Pier 51 Playground is great for water lovers. At the heart of the playground is a wooden pirate ship. A spiral ramp leads to the lookout, then kids slide down into a water play area outfitted with huge water gushers and buckets. Kids can also “search for lost treasure” in the sand pit.

A yellow, tree-like structure spritzes water for those kiddies who can’t get enough of H20. Brass animals, such as turtles and crabs, adorn the playground, and the sand play area and fences explain Manhattan’s ecological history. Little tots like wading in the moving stream and playing in the small spray sprinklers. Don’t forget your towels and sunscreen!

Restrooms: Comfort stations are located on-site along the walking path.

Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Chelsea Park
The Chelsea Waterside Play Area in Hudson River Park has always been a popular spot for locals and otherwise, and a $34 million overhaul from architect Michael Van-Valkenburgh (his firm is behind the design of Brooklyn Bridge Park as well) brought playground equipment from Danish firm MONSTRUM to the northeast for the first time. Gentle sprinklers are among play structures that include a giant, one-of-a-kind, multicolor Robina wood pipefish (a species found in the Hudson), a 64-foot wooden slide, plus a large sandpit, and limestone cattle head sculptures salvaged from an old building in the meatpacking district.

Restrooms: You can access restrooms in Chelsea Park at West 23rd Street.

The Ancient Playground in Central Park
Located near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this Central Park playground has climbing pyramids and other play features inspired by the museum’s collection of Egyptian Art. The Ancient Playground has two user-activated water features. Big kids can enjoy the main climbing structure where water runs down an obelisk and cascades like a mini-waterfall into an open area with water jets; a more tame area for younger children features spray nozzles embedded in the walls.

Restrooms: This playground has accessible restrooms.

Madison Square Park Playground
This playground, officially known as the Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground, is known as a smaller space with big fun. The playground features a jungle gym and appropriate play equipment for both tots and older kids. The highlight during the summer is when the 15-foot tall waterwheel and sprinklers are activated. Bonus: a LEGO store/experience is located a stone’s throw away on 5th Avenue at 23rd Street. Make it a day out: There are Wifi hotspots throughout the park, and Eataly is right across the street on Fifth Ave.

Restrooms: Not in the park, but there are public restrooms on Madison Avenue between 23rd Street and 24th Street.

The Water Lab at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Other splash pads pale in comparison to this incredible water play space. Set within natural rock structures, kids can run through water jets, frolic in sprinklers, or use pumps to create their own water fountains. To complete the beach feel, there’s a huge sand pit and swings nearby.

The Water Lab opens to the public once temperatures reach a steady 80+ degrees, and closes down in inclement weather. Check ahead! And if you’re concerned about getting your belongings wet, there are lockers available for free and for very cheap (25 cents!) at Pier 2 and 5.

Restrooms: There are restrooms at Pier 6.

The Splash Pad is open daily from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. If you’re hungry, grab a bite at the Bluestone Cafe on site. If you’re there on a Sunday, check out Smorgasburg nearby at the park’s Breeze Hill. J.J. Byrne Playground in Park Slope
After a major makeover in 2012, this Park Slope gem is now loaded with activities for kids of all ages and tons of room to roam. (It’s the site of the Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776, under the leadership of General Washington.) The littlest kiddos will love the colorful farm animal cutouts, interactive panels and scaled-down slides. Older kids can test their balance and climbing skills on a giant, caterpillar-shaped structure.

On warm days, kids flock to the sprinkler area, which is complete with water cannons. If all of those features leave your kids wanting more, ongoing public garden projects can be found on the west end of the park near the Old Stone House, and large athletic fields are beyond that for kicking or throwing a ball around.

Restrooms: Restrooms are found in the Old Stone House.

San Diego’s parks and playgrounds were made with kids in mind and good for us, there are plenty to explore. From digging in the sand to climbing walls, here are the best playgrounds and parks in San Diego county

We’ve searched high and low and came up with the 11 of the coolest playgrounds in San Diego. From an old classic, a few that have undergone million-dollar renovations and others that are entirely brand new, each of these parks has something unique that you won’t find anywhere else. Tell your kids about the turf hill they can slide down on cardboard, the stream they can play in, the Belmont Park-inspired pink tarp slide, the story-book walking trail or the 3-story slide. Plan ahead because a couple of these even have splash pads, a wheels track your kids can bike, scoot or skate around until their legs are tired.

The Best Playgrounds in San Diego

1. Maruta Gardner Playground

Dubbed locally as the “Pink Park”, it’s named after late community activist Maruta Gardner and designed to model Belmont Park right across the street. You can’t miss the uncanny resemblance of the pink tarp slide in the shape of a roller-coaster, the silly swings circle around like a carousel, and the climbing ropes of the ropes course. The paved pathway lines the beach at Bonita Cove so bring the sand toys and make it a beach day. Walk across the street to Belmont Park for a few rides, eats and treats that will make for one special day!

1100 W Mission Bay Dr.
Mission Bay
Online: sandiego.gov

2. Veteran’s Park

The city’s first inclusive net climber at the newly rebuilt Veteran’s Park in Chula Vista allows kids in wheelchairs to access the play structure. GameTime built this playground with surfacing at each side for wheelchair access and a transfer platform for kids to climb up and into the net and slide down the other side. This is part of the recreation center where you’ll also find many community classes, sports, skate area, dog run and picnic tables.

Chula Vista

3. Olympus Park

Activity Hill at Olympus Park has all kinds of ways to slide down it. BYO Cardboard for the turf hill or concrete slide system or slide down the whimsical covered tube slide that hugs the hillside. When kids tire of this hill, they’ll find a zip line, tire swing, merry-go-round, a cool climbing cube, botanical garden, skate park and walking trails. There’s so much to do here you might as well pack a lunch and spend the day!

Parking: Residential street parking only. This one is popular on the weekends and some parents have been ticketed when this park initially opened for parking violations. Make sure you’re parked legally nearby and know that you may have to park a few blocks over.

4. Cottonwood Creek Park

Build dams and float leaf-boats down the manmade creek alongside this open playground. Climb up the giant boulder, play on the play structures, run over bridges and meander the walking paths. This ocean-aired park is just a few blocks from Moonlight Beach and walkable to coffee, ice cream and pizza shops one street down.

5. Poinsettia Community Park

When the playground inspector reports “this is one of the most unique playgrounds I’ve seen in over 20 years!”, you know it’s good! With a recent extreme makeover designed for ‘inclusive play’, this playground boasts tons of fun for everyone. Rock climb up to the slide, swing across the orange circle bars, balance over the obstacle wall slides, swing on the platform swing and teeter-totter under the futuristic shade canopy.

6600 Hidden Valley Rd.
Carlsbad
Online: carlsbadca.gov

6. Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park

Bring your energy and maybe some wheels to spend the day at Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park. This large newer park has so much to do, but littles can start at the tot lot for baby swings, group swing and monkey bars, and older kiddos will love the unique and challenging climbing walls and domes and a 4-person seesaw. There’s a Discovery Area with a sand lot, musical elements and a (fake) climbing rock. Roll your way over to the skate plaza or the popular bike pump track. Kids of all ages and interests will surely love playing here, whether it’s climbing around the playground, biking, skating or just running free.

5977 Village Center Loop Rd.
San Diego
Online: sandiego.gov

7. Waterfront Park

One of the coolest, most unique playgrounds is downtown at the Waterfront Park with all kinds of futuristic yet whimsical play structures. Rock climb over a ribbon of twisted metal, crawl inside an orb of cargo nets or take a spin on the merry-go-round that’s unlike any you’ve ever seen. Most of these seem best suited for older kids, but walk over to the fountain jets where littles and all ages alike will love splashing and running through the wading pools. One of the best things about coming here, besides the city skyline views, is there’s no need to pack up any food because you can grab breakfast or lunch from the reasonably priced on-site snack shop.

Parking: The best place to park is in the paid parking garage that’s directly underneath this park ($10/day). Metered parking is available nearby or take the trolley to the County Center/Little Italy Station two blocks east.

8. Grape Day Park

Make it a GRAPE day at this fun playground in Escondido. Slide through this bunch of grapes, climb through the grapevines, or play on the harvest-themed play structures. Afterward, walk past the registered historic homesteads situated at this park and over to the decommissioned locomotive engine docked next to the old train station. Walk across the street to the fun Children’s Discovery Museum to make it a full day of fun and play.

321 N. Broadway
Escondido

9. Civita Park

Civita Park in Mission Valley is an urban oasis with all kinds of play features. Two playgrounds have separate age features, a nature themed play area is a nod to the quarry this area was dug out from, miles of trails, a bird house and pollinator parks, chess and ping pong tables (BYO equipment), a grassy amphitheater for concerts and even a splash pad. Plan your visit for a Tuesday evening when they have weekly food trucks and live music.

Parking: The main parking lot is at Civita Blvd. + Russell Pkwy, but you can also park all along Civita Blvd. (bring a stroller because little legs might tire from this long-ish walk).

7960 Civita Blvd.
Mission Valley
Online: civitalife.com

10. Mast Park

Curious explorers will love the nature discovery area at Mast Park; which boasts repurposed Mast Park trees, leaves, bark, sticks and rocks to explore. Let little ones use their imagination to build and create with these elements or head to the renovated forest-themed playgrounds with a three-story slide, swings (including 1 ADA) and a Global Motion Spinner. Walk the 1-mile loop trail with the enclosed dog park in the center, but start at the end with the story book trail and read a page from this story as you walk along. This trail will line the disc-golf course and end with the concession stand open on weekends.

9125 Carlton Hills Blvd.
Santee
Online: cityofsanteeca.gov

11. Lakeview Park

Lake views and sunset hues will delight your senses, but kids will love this forest-themed park with new playground equipment. Bring some wheels to scoot, ride or just walk around the ¾ mile flat paved lake trail. Take the side trail down to the dock and watch the ducks (no feeding signs are posted). Head back to the playground’s splash pad to catch one of the posted timed water fountains.
