One thing I’ve learned as a parent is that getting through all the tantrums, the endless chauffeuring, and the rejected dinners is so much easier with a trip on the horizon to look forward to—even if it’s months down the road. If you’re thinking about your next adventure (spring break is just around the corner), might we put Puerto Vallarta on your radar, if it isn’t already? I recently flew down to Mexico’s Pacific coast for the first time and, from the beautiful beaches and lush mountains to adventure sports and incredible food, it’s fair to say that I’m hooked. The only issue is that I can’t decide whether to go back with my kids or just my husband (we’re long overdue for some alone time). So I’m going to give you the rundown on both options because there are so many things to do in Puerto Vallarta and there’s definitely something for everyone.

Puerto Vallarta for the littles

No family vacation is drama-free, from sibling brawls to stomach bugs, but hopefully your kids can pick up some of the beach town’s chilled vibes. I’ve spent a few trips with my two littles at all-inclusives in other parts of Mexico where we didn’t leave the resort at all, and even though we had a great time, by the end of the trip you start to feel the monotony of it all. So I loved having a safe and vibrant town to explore when you need to switch things up, and I know my kindergartener and first-grader would too.

What to do with kids

Visiting the Malecon is one of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta
The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta

Wander the Malecon: Kiddies can live their best lives in PV, starting on the Malecon—an esplanade that runs along the beach in the heart of town where you’ll spot a cluster of giant rocking horses inviting tourists big and small to go for a ride. There’s plenty of colorful art and bronze sculpture to discover along the mile-long boardwalk, not to mention tub after tub of silky Mexican ice cream. You’ll find plenty of beaches, restaurants, and shops to explore and you can catch a free show at the open-air amphitheater, Los Arcos.

Get turnt at the TiLT Museum: You’ll love this mind-bending spot as much as your kids—just make sure your phone is fully charged because you’ll be taking a lot of pics as you wander through the different interactive 3D murals. Pose as if you’re painting a portrait of Frida Khalo, hop onto some scaffolding to pretend to make graffiti, and hang ten on a surfboard with dolphins diving overhead. Artist Tracy Lee Stum (whose other museum happens to be in New Jersey) will turn your world upside down.

Lush greenery and flowers at the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens
Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Head to the gardens: Your kids are going to want to look out for Ping Pong, the cutest little dog who belongs to one of the guides (and has a hilarious tendency to growl at the gardeners). But you’ll be too distracted by the gorgeous growth on these 180 hectares of carefully conserved land at Vallarta Botanical Gardens (VBG), from the most spectacular orchids to vanilla bean plantations (the process to grow them is wild). I’d recommend having a guide take you through to better understand the plants and wildlife, take age-appropriate hikes, and have a cooling dip in the Los Horcones River. Oh, and don’t miss the pet cemetery where lots of locals have buried their beloved dogs, cats, and birds. When everyone starts getting hangry, grab some fish tacos and chips with guac on the premises at Hacienda de Oro (and reward yourself for being awesome parents with a Vanilla Bean Mojito).

Go for a snorkel: Call up Captain Dave of Ol’ Salty’s Ranch to charter a boat for the afternoon and head to Los Arcos de Mismaloya, a striking natural rock formation that gives Amalfi vibes and has some amazing snorkeling for all ages. Our in-water guide was Tatiana from Mexico Real Tours and she was so informative and so. much. fun. Lounge about on the boat snacking on seasonal fruit (with an optional sprinkle of Tajin) and stop by Playa Colomitos, Mexico’s teeny tiniest beach. Banderas Bay is also the spot for whale-watching (Humpbacks, in particular). Look into this if you happen to be in PV at the right time of year, from December to March and note that some tours only take kids ages 6 and up.

Set sail with some pirates: Are you the best parent ever? Now you arrrr! Take your crew on a six-hour adventure on the high seas aboard a real wooden pirate ship. You’ll get breakfast and lunch, plus a full-on pirate show with acrobatics, song, and dance. And don’t worry, you won’t have to deal with any cabin fever thanks to a stop at Majahuitas Island, a natural reserve where families can kayak, snorkel, play beach volleyball, and go on a treasure hunt.

A teen rappelling down a mountain, one of the coolest things to do in Puerto Vallarta
Visit Puerto Vallarta

Find some adventure: If you’ve got older kids who love being active there are so many outdoor activities to tackle, and a great tour operator is Canopy River. You can try a ziplining circuit through the mountains or ride a raft down river rapids, and there’s also rapelling, hiking, parasailing, and more.

Where to stay: Velas Vallarta

The lush grounds at Velas Vallarta, a great family friendly all-inclusive in puerto vallarta
Velas Vallarta

For an all-inclusive experience just 20 minutes from the center of town and a few minutes from the marina, head to Velas Vallarta. The family-friendly resort is big and bustling but with 345 suites it’s not overwhelming. Large rooms easily adapt to the size of your family thanks to connecting doors that add additional bedrooms when needed, and two-bedroom family suites include a kitchen (hello, early morning cereal), dining area, living room, and balcony. There are several pools to cool off and a kid’s club for ages 4-12 that runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day (programming includes sports like tennis and soccer, board games, crafts, sand castle competitions, treasure hunts, and movie nights). Two restaurants, one of which is practically on the beach, serve up international fare, and snack stations with Mexican goodies and ice cream help keep between-meal mood swings at bay.

Puerto Vallarta for the bigs

Richard Burton fell for Puerto Vallarta after spending time there filming The Night of the Iguana. After buying his own casita, he surprised his then-lover Elizabeth Taylor with the house across the street, called Casa Kimberly (now a gorgeous boutique hotel). The pair built a bridge between the two homes, which the hot-headed couple probably used as much for storming out of each others’ houses as they did for secret rendezvous free from paparazzi. Let the spirit of Richard and Elizabeth’s steamy romance(s) reignite your passion on a parents-only trip to PV.  After a decade of marriage and two kids, my husband and I are due to get away and remember that despite the uncapped toothpaste and nagging and overall exhaustion, we really do love each other.

What to do with your partner

Explore the Cuale River Island: In the heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta is a narrow strip of land dividing the Centro and Zona Romantica districts and running alongside the Cuale River, perpendicular to the ocean. If you walk the Malecon you’ll find an entrance to the small island, where you’ll be greeted by the River Cafe (which I hear has riotous New Year’s Eve parties). Beyond the cafe is a treasure trove of art galleries, shops, restaurants, and market stalls with so many lovely ceramics, silver jewelry, straw hats, paintings, and all kinds of souvenirs for your kids. Be ready to snap some pics around the rubber trees, with their signature exposed roots, and possibly some iguanas hanging around.

restaurant staff serving tacos al pastor from a spit as part of a street taco tour, which is one of the yummiest things to do in puerto vallarta
Tacos el pastor

Take a street taco tour: When’s the last time you had four blissful hours to wander around eating tacos and churros and drinking beer? Prioritize this! The six-ish tacos we tried at various stalls, stands and small family-owned eateries were better than any I’ve ever tasted, from the smoky marlin with chipotle sauce and beef cheek to the crispiest fish tacos and al pastor cooked shawarma-style with a hunk of pineapple dripping down from the top of the spit. Mid-tour we watched a couple make from-scratch churros on the street (unreal) and capped off the night in a super-cool raicilla bar (the local distilled spirit).

Spend the night at the theatre: Consider this date night 3.0. Grab tickets to ALMA, by Rhythms of the Night, a dinner show only accessible by water. After a sunset cruise (with an open bar, if that floats your boat), you and your boo have a candlelit dinner before heading to the open-air amphitheater for a musical telling of the story of Alma. It’s all about the Mexican people’s connection to animals, nature, and the spiritual world told with some serious acrobatics and special effects.

luxury catamaran sailing is one of the best things to do in puerto vallarta

Sail through the bay: Hop aboard a large catamaran or sailboat for some quiet luxury with your other half. I swear the views will make you forget you even own a phone. You’ll anchor up at a secret cove for some snorkeling, paddleboarding, and swimming, then have lunch and a few drinks before heading back to the marina.

Eat your heart out: I couldn’t get enough of the food in PV, and I’m not just saying that because I generally subsist on leftover French toast and Xtreme Cheddar Goldfish. Looking out on the Cuale River, my 10-course tasting menu at Tintoque was easily one of the best meals of my life (the 36-hour tomato stuffed with goat cheese was a revelation). It showcased the best of Mexico in the most uniquely creative and sumptuous way. I also had an amazing meal at Makal Gastronomica, where my cocktail came in a test tube and combined raicilla, coffee (because mom), and a cocoa drink called chilate.

a street with brightly lit bars in the Zona Romantica, one of the fun things to do in Puerto Vallarta
Zona Romantica

Live it up in the Zona Romántica: The nightlife is popping in the romantic zone, also known as Old Vallarta, which is one of the top LGBTQ+ destinations in Mexico. You’ll find everything from drag shows to mezcal bars and loads of world-class restaurants so you can live it up like you did before your schedule filled up with soccer practices and toddler gymnastics.

a couple giving the thumbs up while driving an atv over jorullo bridge, one of the most fun things to do in puerto vallarta
ATV Tour on Jorullo Bridge

Go for a wild ride: If you’re looking for some couple’s adventure, join an ATV tour over what is said to be the world’s longest vehicular suspension bridge. Jorullo Bridge crosses the Cuale River at almost 500 feet, so it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You can rip through the Sierra Madre Occidental on your own ATVs or cozy up on one and take turns driving. Tours often include a trip to the El Salto waterfall (bring bathers!) and a tequila tasting.

Where to stay: Casa Velas

The beautiful pool and Spanish facade at Casa Velas all-inclusive in Puerto Vallarta
Casa Velas

A sister resort to Velas Vallarta but without the little ones, Casa Velas is a luxe adults-only all-inclusive that’s a lot more intimate—and a whole lot quieter. From the moment you arrive and settle into a plush couch for the most relaxing check-in experience of your life (fruity tequila popsicles included), you can feel your entire body relax. Each of the boutique resort’s 80 suites is beautiful and spacious (mine had a personal plunge pool on the terrace) and I loved the overall Spanish Hacienda vibe. With just one main pool and one restaurant, it’s a slower lifestyle than your typical all-inclusive, perfect to unwind and reconnect. For a change of scenery, hop on the resort’s shuttle and it’s just a few minutes to Táu Beach Club with private ocean access and seaside eats, or book a round of golf at the Marina Vallarta golf course (you’ll save 25%). I’m more of a massage girl, and ABJA spa does not disappoint (be sure to take advantage of their hydrotherapy tub, sauna, and steam rooms).

Additional reporting by Kate Loweth

If there’s any time to start thinking about vacation, the holidays are it. Whether you’re dreaming of a break from the cold, thinking of an absolutely epic gift, or just need to get away after the whirlwind of the season, it’s hard for travel to not be on all our minds. And when we say Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa in Los Cabos, Mexico delivers the ultimate epic gift/break from the cold/just need a getaway vacation of your dreams, we speak from first-hand experience.

Located on the stunning Golden Beach in Los Cabos, Mexico, Villa La Valencia is one of the newest all-inclusive resorts in the area. And in a location filled with resorts, the only way to stand out is by being…well, the best. And they are.

When You Arrive…

Villa La Valencia Lobby

From the second you step onto the property, you know you’re officially on vacation (of course, the full-service beach-inspired bar ready to serve you as soon as you walk outside of the Los Cabos airport helps, too). The clean, bright, wide-open expanse of the lobby includes the La Jolla Bar and an unbelievable view of the rooms, pools, and ocean (along with seating to enjoy that view).

Villa La Valencia Terraza Lobby

Every single staff member we met smiled with a hand over their heart (a signature of The Villa Group’s properties). We were guided through the check-in, and given our wristbands to wear during our stay that serve as both room keys and access to all the amenities (how easy is that?).

Speaking of Amenities…

Villa La Valencia Pools

The first thing you’ll notice (we’re pretty sure everyone does) is the collection of pools that span all the way to the beach. A serene adults-only pool, complete with cabanas, leads into the ultimate family pool featuring kiddo-friendly depths and lots of seating. Want to get a little closer to the beach? The infinity pool at the edge of the property is what resort life is all about.

Villa La Valencia Infinity Pool

Each pool offers poolside service from the relaxed Coralle Pool Bar & Restaurant, located right next to the infinity pool, along with a hot tub in each space. And, of course, there’s beach access with private lounging and food service.

Villa La Valencia Beach

But the real star of the show? The unbelievable lazy river that wraps around the whole interior of the property. Float for a lap or two, or relax as long as you want—it’s the longest lazy river in Cabo. Everyone is welcome.

Villa La Valencia Lazy River

Villa La Valencia’s amenities don’t stop there. A wellness and fitness center offers a hydrotherapy circuit. The Azul Spa onsite features luxury massages and facials, body treatments, and even the option to have your in-room bathtub turned into a private spa experience. We highly recommend the After-Sun Treatment if you find yourself a little red (it’s really easy to forget to reapply sunscreen when you’re floating that lazy river. Trust us.).

Welcome to Your Room

Villa La Valencia Suite

Each of Villa La Valencia’s 308 suites is ultra-comfortable, spacious, and complete with either a pool or ocean view (to enjoy on the furnished balcony, of course). Make Sure You Come Hungry

Latitud 23.5 Steakhouse

From the breezy, casual El Patrón Restaurant, the chic, fine dining of Latitud 23.5 Steakhouse, to the open-air Italian kitchen at La Taberna, you literally can’t go wrong. The servers at each onsite restaurant addressed us by name and each meal was an incredible event. Of course, they’re not all on the formal side. For casual breakfast (with an unbelievable buffet), El Patrón is the place to be. Dine right by the ocean and infinity pool at Coralle, and snag quick snacks at Palmita Market & Deli. Wrap up your evening at La Jolla Bar for the perfect nightcap.

El Patrón Restaurant

You can catch live music, tequila tastings, and different culinary events, too, that make sure no two meals are exactly the same.

There’s Something for Everyone

Kids Club

As parents ourselves, we adore that Villa La Valencia recognizes that kiddos relax differently than adults. The large, brightly-colored Kids Club offers a place for your littles to let loose and have a blast. Video games, movies, tie-dye class, face painting, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts—kids will love having a place fully dedicated to them.

Villa La Valencia Nighttime Aerial View

Nightlife is just as much fun. Family movie night, blackjack, live music—there’s always something going on. During our visit, we got to check out their Art Walk and Taco Night (complete with a high-energy saxophone duo). Villa La Valencia is constantly coming up with ways to keep your vacation feeling like one every single second you’re there.

Los Cabos

Los Cabos is also famous for stunning beaches and clear water. Options to book tours, ATV rentals, jet ski adventures, glass-bottom boat tours, whale-watching, horseback riding, and more are all available. You seriously don’t want to miss these experiences.

Sister Properties

We were lucky enough to get to tour Villa La Valencia’s gorgeous sister properties right in Los Cabos: Villa del Palmar, Villa del Arco, and Villa La Estancia. Each resort is as beautiful as we’d come to expect from The Villa Group, and each offers a unique experience that caters to everyone’s pricing preferences and accommodation needs.

Be Prepared to be Treated Like Family

Every single minute we spent at Villa La Valencia was truly magic. And while the jaw-dropping resort, luxurious rooms, and top-tier dining were all part of it, we have to say that the best part was the people. There wasn’t a single staff member who didn’t make us feel like we were the only guests there, who didn’t go absolutely above and beyond for us, and who stopped to smile with a hand over their heart when they chatted with us. ‘Welcoming’ is an understatement.

From the pools to the Kids Club and the indescribable beauty of Los Cabos and its people, Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa offers an unparalleled family vacation that you won’t be able to wait to experience again.

Make sure to check out their many deals and special offers to make your next vacation the most memorable yet.

The coastal views are unlike anything you’ve seen before

You don’t have to have a full week vacation to get some rest and recharge with your crew. Mendocino is the perfect option for a family micro-cation as you can drive there when work and school get out on Friday and enjoy the weekend on the coast. We have the full scoop on all the family-friendly Mendocino activities your kids will love including the Skunk Train railbikes and horseback riding on the beach. Book your Mendocino escape today!

Getting There

Kate Loweth

Just over three hours north of San Francisco, the drive to Mendocino County can definitely be part of the adventure. A less windy route takes you from 101 to exit at Railroad Avenue where you head to toward Bodega Bay on the coast. Cows, horses and goats will keep the kids entertained along the way. Stop at Bodega Bay Oyster Company for some local shellfish. If you time your arrival for Saturday or Sunday noon-4 p.m., they will be serving up barbecued oysters!

Bodega Bay is another great stop along your drive. Bribe the kids with taffy from Patrick's Salt Water Taffy (pink building on the coastal side of Highway 1 in Bodega Bay) and then grab some fried artichokes with a gorgeous view at The Birds Cafe.

Stock up for your Mendocino visit with a stop at Surf Market in Gualala. In addition to picnic staples like local cheese, bread and sandwich fixings, you can purchase some fresh fish or sausage from their extensive meat counter to cook up for your dinner.

If you are to driving through Anderson Valley don't miss The Apple Farm. Head off the main road for just a moment on the way into Hendy Woods State Park and you will find this adorable farm stand were they serve delicious apple cider and offer hard cider tastings on the weekend. Be sure to grab a bottle of the non-alcoholic variety to sip as your finish your drive through the redwoods. The Apple Farm also has overnight accommodations.

Adventures

Kate Loweth

Skunk Train – Fort Bragg
All aboard! Fort Bragg is where you can catch the Skunk Train for a ride through the redwoods along Pudding Creek. This train (so named because oldsters claimed that you could smell it coming before you'd see it) has both indoor cars and an outdoor car so that you can walk around and make the most of your ride. The Pudding Creek Express is a one-hour, 7-mile round trip tour that takes you over the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad. Snacks and beverages (including beer and wine) are available for purchase on the train.

Kids will love the experience of riding the railbikes and we totally recommend it for families. Two riders are seated on a double recumbent bike that rests right on the train tracks. With power-assisted pedaling, you and your partner make your way along the tracks for a 30-minute ride. When you get to your destination, you have some time to take a hike in the woods or grab a snack before you head back into town.

After your ride, check to see if the Mendocino Coast Model Railroad is open for visitors. Your Skunk Train ticket will get you in to check out over 1,300 feet of track that document the area's logging history. You may have trouble getting the little LEGO lovers past the kid-level train table out front (strategically placed to let them touch the LEGO trains and not the model trains inside).

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens – Fort Bragg
Color is everywhere at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The succulent garden offers colorful cactus and spots to sit and enjoy your afternoon. March and April bring the fragrant rhododendrons that thrive in this coastal climate. Come in the summer and the vegetable garden will be full of life. Stop by to see if any strawberries are ripe and try one for yourself.

Russian Gulch State Park – Mendocino
There are tons of state park options to get your redwood fix in Mendocino County. Russian Gulch State Park offers a view of a collapsed sea cave called Devil’s Punchbowl just a short walk from the parking lot (high tide provides the most drama). If you have more time to spend in the park, hike the Fern Canyon Loop Trail to check out the waterfall.

Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too - Mendocino
Nestled in a small cove on Big River Estuary, just before it flows into Mendocino Bay, is the adventure destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 1982, Catch a Canoe and Bicycles Too offers ultra-stable redwood outriggers, kayaks, canoes, SUP and bicycle rentals for anyone who wants to explore beautiful Big River and beyond. Cruise down the water to see seal or otters on shore and plenty of birds catching fish. You can even bring Fido along on the Canine Cruiser, a specially-designed rig that allows dogs to see all the action.

Ross Ranch Horseback Riding - Manchester
Go for a horseback ride on the beach or through the redwoods with the skilled horses of Ross Ranch. Kids 6 and up can participate in this experience (we highly recommend the beach ride!) that lasts about 1.5 hours in the saddle. You'll take a slow pace down to the sand where the horses will walk along a gorgeous and nearly-deserted beach.

Ford House Museum – Mendocino
If you've got some history buffs in your crew, definitely plan to stop at the Ford House Museum in Mendocino. Here you can take a look at a huge diorama depicting the town as it stood in 1890 (count how many water towers you can find!). Check out the whale bones and learn how whales use baleen to filter feed in the waters off Mendocino.

Kate Loweth

B. Bryan Preserve – Point Arena
Did you know that Mendocino County is home to giraffes, antelopes and zebras? Around 100 of these majestic animals live at B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena and you can bring the kids there for a visit. They are currently offering self-guided car tours and guided tours aboard a 1974 open-air Land Rover where you can learn how they breed critically-endangered and endangered African hoof stock. You can even spend the night in one of the on-site cottages.

Point Arena Lighthouse – Point Arena
Get a bit of a history lesson along with a gorgeous view of the coastline when you visit the Point Arena Lighthouse. This non-profit that is completely dependent on visitors is a great place to spend the afternoon. Begin your visit at the museum where you can learn the history of the lighthouse and see the original 1908 First Order Fresnel lens that was removed from the lighthouse in 2009. Learn how the lighthouse keepers were responsible for keeping the light going and cleaning every nook and cranny of the lens. Head to the whale watch room where you can borrow some binoculars to try and spot a gray whale offshore. After your museum visit, climb the 145 steps to the top of the tallest lighthouse tower on the West Coast where you will get a 360 degree view of the coastline along with an informative lesson from the tour guide there.

Pennyroyal Farm – Boonville
Take your trip home via Highway 128 so that you can pass through Boonville, home to Pennyroyal Farm. This farmstead creamery and winery offers daily tours of the barn where you can meet the goats and sheep that live there. Learn all of their names (yes, each one has a name!), how these animals are raised and how their milk is turned into cheese. Time your visit with lambing season in the spring for an extra-special treat. Your tour ends with a wine and cheese tasting for the parents and a grape juice and cheese tasting for the kids.

Beaches and Tide Pools

Kate Loweth

Bowling Ball Beach – Point Arena
Bowling Ball Beach is so named because of the massive bowling ball-shaped formations that line the beach when the tide is low. These are concretions—sedimentary rock formed when mineral cements bind grains of sand or stone into larger formations. You can access the trail to Bowling Ball Beach at mile marker 11.41 where the sign reads "Park facing south only." Here, take the northern path across the bluffs and follow the stairs down. At the bottom, you will likely have to scramble across downed logs to access the beach. Just take it slow and the adventure will be worth it!

Glass Beach – Fort Bragg
Treasure hunters flock to Glass Beach to search the sands for glass made smooth by years of riding the waves offshore. From 1906 to 1967, everything from cars to batteries to bottles, cans and appliances were unceremoniously pushed over the cliffs into the ocean. Mother Nature turned this trash into treasure of tiny sea glass. Get the kids to search for colors from clear to the more rare reds and blues. Just make sure that all treasures get left behind for the next visitor to enjoy. As with all California State Parks, the glass found at Glass Beach is protected and should not be taken home.

MacKerricher State Park – Fort Bragg
A prime spot for tide pools, MacKerricher State Park is just three miles from downtown Fort Bragg. Stop in at the visitors center when you arrive to feel pelts from animals that live in the area and see how your size compares to that of a whale. Then follow the map to the boardwalk and seal watching station. If you arrive when the tide is low, the area has a massive tide pool that will keep the kids busy for hours. Look for colorful sea stars and speedy sand crabs. Then venture on down the boardwalk to look for seals sunning themselves on the rocks.

Where to Eat

Kate Loweth

Mendocino has no shortage of great spots to grab a bite for the road or to enjoy a meal with a view. Frankie's offers the kid-favorite combo of pizza and ice cream. The thin crust cheese satisfies any kid appetite and the candy cap mushroom ice cream is a sweet treat for adventurous eaters. When the sun is out and the fog stays away, pick a spot on the deck at Flow Restaurant where the view is gorgeous and the fish tacos are a favorite. If you are looking for a family friendly fine dining experience MacCullum House Inn staff is happy to accommodate your kids pallet. Although the restaurant does not have a kids menu the chef is willing to adjust some items to be sure your kids find something they like and the banana split with house made ice cream is delightful.

In Fort Bragg's Noyo Harbor, the Harborview Restaurant at the Noyo Harbor Inn gets top billing for gorgeous views and delicious food to go along with it. Book a spot on the deck and just might spot a seal swimming by during your appetizer course. So fun! You can also head to the harbor itself for some of the freshest fish you've ever had. We loved the casual vibe on the outdoor deck at Noyo Fish Company (definitely get the fish tacos).

The quaint town of Point Arena has a tiny coffee shop, Little Green Bean, that offers tons of area recommendations while you wait for your beans to be ground and your pour-over drip coffee to brew. Head across the street to Franny's Cup and Saucer to satisfy your sweet tooth. Open Wednesday-Saturday, favorites at Franny's are the macarons, giant gingersnaps and not-to-be-missed Friday donuts. The Point Arena Wharf has a coffee shop so grab a cup of coffee and walk the pier, climb some rocks and look for sea creatures in the tide pools.

Where to Stay

Noyo Harbor Inn

Noyo Harbor Inn—Fort Bragg

Located just above Noyo Harbor, you'll be off the main drag of Fort Bragg with views of the harbor right out your window. If you choose to stay in one of the onsite cottages you may even be able to enjoy a coastal view from your private hot tub. Definitely pick up a box of their fudge and a bag of their cookies when you check in.

The hotel's restaurant offers both breakfast and dinner with a view of the crashing waves or the hotel's beautiful garden. Breakfast choices include Ole's Swedish Hotcakes (the short stack is still big enough to share), Little River Inn scones and loads of egg options. If you are there for Sunday brunch, make sure you ask for your complimentary glass of champagne. For dinner, kids can choose from options like the monster burger (which really is quite large) or fish and chips. Best Places to See Fall Colors in Northeast US

Just a quick flight from the U.S. will get you to these resorts for some well-deserved family time

With its breathtaking cliffs, many nightlife offerings, and beautiful beaches, the Los Cabos area of Mexico is well known as a luxury vacation spot. But amazingly, it’s also the perfect spot for fun family getaways. Both kids and adults will enjoy water activities on the Sea of Cortez, taking in the area’s great location for whale watching, or off-roading in a four-wheeler. And when it’s time to head back to the hotel, staying at an all-inclusive resort can help control spending while keeping everyone occupied when onsite.

Some of Cabo has non-swimmable beaches so you’ll want to check that before you go if that’s high on your list. Here are some of the best all-inclusive resorts we found for families in Cabo.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos

Separate spaces for guests of all ages define Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos. Spacious rooms range from Junior Suites that sleep three to a two-story, 4-bedroom penthouse that accommodates up to ten. And all suites offer an ocean-view experience. Children can have time away from their parents at the onsite kid’s club that entertains little ones ages 4 to 12 with games and activities such as sandcastle building, movie time, and beach treasure hunts. Parents looking for a little ‘me time’ can explore the adult-only areas or head to the spa for a luxurious pampering session. The resort also features eight heated outdoor pools, a wide beach, multiple eating locations, an optional all-inclusive add-on option, and a family package allowing kids to eat and stay free.

Villa La Valencia Beach Resort

Home to the longest lazy river in Los Cabos, Villa La Valencia Beach Resort has plenty of opportunities for families to relax and get away, whether on the beach or in their rooms. Suites offer private terraces and living areas to help parents keep a routine if needed. At the same time, the onsite mini-mart and in-room refrigerators allow families with smaller children to enjoy meals on their schedules. Other times, everyone can get out and explore the multiple pools, four restaurants, and a lazy river. And remember that everyone needs time to themselves. The kid’s club allows children to create piñatas, take Spanish lessons, and enjoy yoga classes while, for an additional fee, parents can enjoy the couple’s experiences at the Azul Wellness Spa.

Fill up your gas tank and get ready to hit the road. From boardwalk amusement parks to aerial trams, these trip-worthy destinations are just a short drive from LA, and will still get home by bedtime.

Terrannea Resort

Drive Time: 31 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It:  You don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the gorgeous splendor of this upscale cliffside resort. Sprawled over 102 acres, Terranea is home to a network of walking and hiking trails that snake along the coastline to the rocky shores below (even dogs are allowed!). Non-guests are welcome to explore the grounds—and there are plenty of wide open hills and fields for littles to run around. When you’re hungry, the casual (albeit pricey) Nelson’s restaurant offers upscale bar food with a killer view. There’s also a bakery by the front entrance that sells all sorts of yummy treats the kids will want to devour. Unique day experiences are also available to non-guests, including art classes, archery, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and a private falconry experience.

Insider’s Tip: Stop by the “Falconry Meet and Greet” every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11-11:30 a.m. to meet Terranea’s falconer and learn about how he works with these majestic birds of prey.

Riley’s Farm & Oak Glen

Drive Time: 80 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: The best time to visit Oak Glen is the fall, when apple season brings hordes of tourists up for a good picking. But the agricultural community of Oak Glen is also home to Riley’s Farm, which not only offers farm activities and U-pick all year long, but also Revolutionary War reenactments, including “Adventures in the Old World” Saturdays, with old-time favorites like archery, tomahawk throwing and corn husk doll-making.

Catalina Island

Elias Shankaji/Unsplash

Drive Time: Boats leave from Long Beach or San Pedro, which is about 25 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: The boat ride alone is reason enough to cruise over to our nearest island neighbor. The 1-hour crossing is an easy way to spot whales, dolphins, or other sea life—along with a great view of the SoCal coastline. Once you’ve docked, you’ll feel miles away on this little island where bison roam free and zipline tours whisk you over scenic canyons with views of the Pacific. Rent a golf cart to explore the island on your own, or book a jeep tour to see all the off-road splendor the island has to offer.

It’s worth noting that an amazing 88 percent of Catalina Island is still wild and uninhabited, as it was set aside as protected land by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Consequently, the island has more than 62 miles of unspoiled beaches, and the longest publicly accessible stretch of undeveloped coastline left in Southern California.

Griffith Park

Venti Views/Unsplash

Drive Time: 7 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: Be a tourist in your own town! Griffith Park has enough to offer that you can spend a whole day exploring its 4,210 acres of land (It’s one of the largest urban wilderness parks in the country!). Littles will love whirling around on the historic carousel (and they’ll equally love knowing that this is the spot Walt Disney reportedly came up with the idea for Disneyland). Tiny stargazers will definitely want to see the Griffith Observatory—especially if you have time to see a show in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, one of the largest planetarium domes in the world. You can make a hiking day out of it by parking near the Greek Theatre and taking the one-mile trail up to the observatory; or, there’s plenty of parking at the top as well.

While you may not fit this all into a day, Griffith Park is also home to the 133-acre LA Zoo—as well as Travel Town, where kids can walk around historic trains and get a miniature train ride. Prefer to see the park on horseback? Griffith Park’s Equestrian Center (called The Los Angeles Equestrian Center) offers trail rides for all levels.

Balboa Village

Drive Time: 47 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: With its historic Ferris wheel, bustling eateries, and waterfront charm, Balboa Village is a perfect place to spend a family day. There are bike and boat rentals, a nautical museum, and an old-school candy store specializing in nostalgic sweets. If you have time, hop aboard the ferry to Balboa Island—you might even spot a migrating whale on the way over. And don’t miss the Balboa Fun Zone, which is like a pint-sized Santa Monica Pier with far fewer tourists.

Insider Tip: The area is home to the original frozen banana, so don’t leave without enjoying the delicious chocolate-covered treat. Both Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop and Sugar ‘n Spice claim to be the first purveyors of the dessert on a stick, but the jury’s still out on which spot is the top banana.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Drive Time: 109 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: This tram ride feels like a Disneyland ride, only you’re actually going somewhere (besides around and around). Boasting a two-and-a-half mile ascent on a rotating tram car, it’s thrilling enough for kids (and adults) of all ages. And then, of course, there is the destination: Once atop the peak, there are hiking trails to explore, a small history museum, and a restaurant where you can admire the view and grab a bite to eat at Forest View Restaurant—8500 feet above sea level.

Pro Tip: Dress warmly. Temps at the top are often 30-40 degrees cooler than the valley floor. It’s cold enough that even in spring, there may be a little bit of snow on top, even when the weather is warm below so check the forecast before heading up.

San Diego Safari Park

Melissa Heckscher

Drive Time: 110 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: It’s a tad closer than the San Diego Zoo (a difference of about 30 miles) and is still one of the largest zoos in the county for seeing a whole menagerie of wildlife. Sprawling more than 1,800 acres, the park is home to more than 3,500 animals—plus loads of interesting ways to see them, including by open-air safari truck or during a “Roar & Snore” sleepover at the park. Of course, you can also just let the littles run and see the place on foot (stroller rentals are available if your kids get tired of walking).

Vasquez Rocks

Melissa Heckscher

Drive Time: 43 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: It’s like a natural playground! Your little bandits will love scurrying across the many prehistoric rocks that jut up from the ground across this 932-acre park near the town of Agua Dulce. The park—which was named after the infamous bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, who used these rocks to elude capture in the 1800s—features gobs of small and colossus rocks, all of which are fairly easy to climb (though we recommend climbing with them for added safety).

Insider Tip: While you’re in the area, stop by the Agua Dulce Winery (open Wed.-Sun.) to taste the locally-made wine.

Whale Watching Cruises

Drive Time: Varies, depending on where you’re departing from (Dana Point, for example, is about 60 miles from DTLA)

Why We Love It: Living on a coast is good for more than just perennial beach days. Our ocean is teeming with life waiting to be discovered—and taking the kids out for a few hours on the waves means they might get that amazing thrill of spotting migrating whales—plus the resident sea lions, seals, and dolphins that make SoCal waters their year-round home.

When to go: Grey whale season runs from Dec. through Apr.; Blue whale season runs May through Nov.

There are several whale-watching outfits leaving out of LA-area harbors, including larger tour operators like Harbor Breeze Cruises and LA Waterfront, which offer two-story boats for $45 a person (if you book online you’ll save some money!). Or, if you want a more intimate experience, companies such as Captain Dave’s and Newport Coastal Adventures out of Dana Point and Newport Beach offer private trips if you’re willing to pay for the privacy; these tours range from about $71 per person for a Zodiac (up to 20 passengers) to $398 for a private charter (up to 6 people).
