From family-friendly delights to major marquee fare, there are so many cinematic reasons to be thankful this year

Allow us to sum up the theatrical onslaught gracing the screens of theaters this fall and winter into one, tiny, three-letter word: wow. Not only do we have the Hunger Games prequel, The Color Purple in musical form, and a Willy Wonka origin story to look forward to, but Ridley Scott, Nia DaCosta, Martin Scorsese, and Sofia Coppola all have new releases just waiting for their standing ovations.

Heads up: There are a ton of rumored releases out there, like Legally Blonde 3 and the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, but if those films make the fall 2023 movie release cut is anyone’s guess. So for our purposes here, we’re sticking with the fall/winter 2023 movie releases that are not only generating the most buzz but also already have calendar dates pinned. Ahead, 29 movies you don’t want to miss.

Burke Museum/Timothy Kenney

Just this month, the Burke Museum welcomed a new Executive Director, Dr. Gabriela Chavarria. Born in Mexico City, this leader in the field of natural sciences got her start at an early age. She studied biology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and then went on to Harvard where she earned her PhD in organismic and evolutionary biology. One of the things that drew Chavarria to the Burke is the way the museum showcases its collections, inviting visitors to take a look behind the scenes. As she takes the helm, Chavarria hopes to expand this Inside-Out approach, engaging more people in the important work going on at the Burke. In fact, you may just see Chavarria sharing her own research and work about native pollinators and the importance of bees and landscapes in the coming weeks. A great reason to buzz on over to this area favorite.

Ijeoma Oluo, a Nigerian-American writer and editor, who was named one of the most influential women in Seattle, gives a voice to issues such as racism, misogynoir, harassment, feminism and social justice. She started out in tech and marketing, but then turned towards blogging and subsequently writing her best-seller, So You Want To Talk About Race, that was released in 2018. It was met with rave reviews and has become a significant guidebook for conversations around American racism. As one of Seattle’s most well known conversationalists about race issues and the invisibility of Black women’s voices, Oluo is here to fight for these important issues and have wit when she does.

Kikisoblu

UW Special Collections

Our city’s grandaddy, Chief Seattle, along with Doc Maynard, paved the way for the birth of our town through their peaceful friendship and support of each other. Chief Seattle’s oldest daughter, Kikisoblu (a.k.a Princess Angeline) kept that legacy alive for years when she remained in Seattle, even when her beloved Duwamish people were treaty-forced onto reservations. She stayed in her home near what's now Pike Place Market and became a mainstay around the city. Streets around the area are named after her, as is a shelter for the YWCA that provides support for women experiencing homelessness. She was the last direct descendant of Chief Seattle and is known for her kindness, acceptance and friendship with the early settlers who built up the city.

Insider tip: On Saturday, April 23, the Duwamish Longhouse is hosting a Kikisoblu Princess Angeline tea, featuring traditional Coast Salish tea, food and live Native flute music.

This lady is out of this world. Literally! Bonnie Dunbar, aerospace engineer and retired NASA astronaut, flew on five Space Shuttle missions in the '80s and '90s. She has logged more than 1,208 hours, or 50-plus days, in space. Following her formal education at the University of Washington, and her first stint at Boeing, Dunbar became a flight controller at NASA and finally an astronaut in 1981. On her space missions, she served as mission specialist and Payload Commander, and has since proved that any little girl has the power to break through that aeronautic glass ceiling if she puts her mind to it. Dunbar also served our community as the President and CEO of The Museum of Flight until April 2010. If anyone has wings to soar, it's Bonnie.

This adventurous lady was not only the first female mayor of Seattle, but also the first female mayor of a major American city. She served on the Seattle City Council in 1922 (she and Katheryn Miracle were the first women ever elected to the council), became council president in 1924 and mayor in 1926. Landes was highly active in women’s organizations including the Women’s Century Club, the Women’s University Club and the League of Women Voters. She also served as madame president of the Seattle Federation of Women’s Clubs, representing thousands of women, and even launched a conference that helped establish Seattle as a sophisticated, modern metropolis. During her mayoral term, she appointed experienced professionals to head up city departments, improved public transportation and parks and put the city's finances in order. The Seattle Opera House is one of her many accomplishments.

Sue Bird, our very own Israeli-American basketball player for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, is certainly a b-baller force to be reckoned with, a mighty Miss amping up the level of women’s sports. Bird was first drafted by the Storm in 2002 as the overall draft pick and has since won four WNBA championships, four Olympic gold medals, two NCAA championships and four FIBA World Cups. She is only one of 11 women to ever attain all four accolades. She has also been honored as one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time. In fact, she is the first player in all of WNBA history to win championships in three different decades. She reminds all the little ladies out there to not fade away from the hoop dreams.

Can you imagine climbing Mt. Rainier? Now, imagine climbing Mt. Everest. It’s quite the unbelievable feat that only a tiny percentage of people will ever do successfully. Unless you are Melissa Arnot and have climbed Everest no less than six times. As a young climber, she first climbed Mt. Rainier in 2001, only later to become a guide in 2004 and a lead guide in 2006. After years of honing her skills, and a few thwarted attempts at climbing the world’s tallest mountain, she became the first American woman to summit and survive the decent of Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. She is currently sponsored by Eddie Bauer and is a participant in the development of their First Ascent brand. She has not only made herself an international climbing expert, but a savvy businesswoman and contributor for this popular Seattle-based outdoor gear company.

Thelma Dewitty

Seattle Urban League, UW Special Collections

We all know how important it was to fight for educational equality, so who better to mention than Thelma Dewitty, the first African American educator ever hired by the Seattle Public School system. In 1947, Dewitty started at Cooper Elementary. Although there was one request for a different teacher, she ultimately won over all her students and their parents. Throughout her prolific career, Dewitty worked at numerous Seattle schools, where she fought against strict school traditions and carved the road for her future African American and women colleagues to follow. Dewitty also worked with the NAACP, the Washington State Board Against Discrimination and the Board of Theater Supervisors for Seattle and King County.

Ana Mari Cauce

We can’t talk about progress of the education system without mentioning Ana Mari Cause. She is an American psychologist, college administrator and the current president of the University of Washington. Born in Havana, Cuba, she relocated to Miami, Florida and then to the Seattle area in 1986. She has grown from being an Assistant Professor to become the first permanent woman president of the institution, as well as the first gay and ethnic minority president at the university. Prior to her appointment as president in 2015, she served as the chair of the American Ethnic Studies Department, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and helped launch The Husky Promise, a tuition-funding initiative at UW. What a testament to barrier breaking if we ever had one.

Olga Sagan

Pike Place Market is the quintessential place to visit in Seattle for locals and visitors alike. As we all know, there are a few places that garner a bit more attention than others, recognizable by the long lines that extend out of the door at all hours of the day. One of those places that people just can’t get enough of is the nationally renowned Piroshky Piroshky bakery. A mainstay at the historic market since 1992, Olga Sagan (sole owner since 2017) has been offering hand-made savory and sweet pastry pies ever since. As an immigrant from Russia, she had to overcome a handful of obstacles, but her determination and her pastry prowess has built a Seattle bakery dynasty. Now with four locations, a food truck and relationships with other well-known Seattle foodie operations, she is on a path to take over the city, one pie at a time.

One of our favorite locals, Megan Rapinoe has catapulted women’s sports into a whole new sphere. Rapinoe is a professional soccer player who currently captains the OL Reign as well as the US National Team. She is a gold medalist in the 2012 London Summer Olympics, the 2015 FIFA’s Women’s World Cup and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and finished second in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She is well known for her play and her activism in many LGBTQ+ and BLM issues. In the past, she has also played with the Seattle Sounders Women in 2012 in preparation for the Olympics. Attendance of those games skyrocketed during her time there. She signed with OL Reign in 2013 and quickly became their leading scorer, garnered her first professional hat trick and was recognized as a Reign FC Legend in September 2019, solidifying herself as a femme footballer and powerhouse who has made her name in not only Seattle sports but women’s sports the world over.

Winkler-Chin is the Executive Director at the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority. She has been instrumental in keeping up the vibrancy and the ethnicity of this unique area. Chin brings in over 20 years of experience in the community economic development arena and aims to find areas of business growth and revitalization to the ID. Her goals include bringing in business that fits with the cultural character of the area, making sure community members are hired in new positions and influencing projects that may otherwise overtake small shops and local homes. She has also recently been appointed to the Mayor’s task force to help set up a plan for a $100 million set of investments allocated for communities of color.

Marie-Claire King

Without Mary-Claire King, we might not have the insight into the intricacies of breast cancer and its susceptibility that we have now. King, an American geneticist, was the very first to show that breast cancer can be inherited in some families due to mutations in the BRCA1 gene. If it wasn’t for her and her team’s efforts and research on linkage analysis to prove the existence of this major gene, the race to finally clone the BCRA1 gene (used to repair mutations) would never have happened. Currently, King's primary focus includes breast cancer, ovarian cancer and schizophrenia; she is also interested in discovering genes that cause common disorders. It’s no wonder she is recognized as one of the 50 most important women in science.

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Are Taking Baby Archie on His First Tour

It’s a great time to be a girl! Our daughters have incredible role models in women at the top of their game, from the USWNT World Cup Champions to more women running for president than ever before. Raising tomorrow’s leaders means encouraging confidence, teaching life skills and exposing them to empowering programming as they grow. Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles—the largest girl-serving nonprofit in its area—knows what it takes to inspire girls in grades K-12 to be Go-getting, Innovating, Risk-Taking Leaders (a.k.a. G.I.R.L.s!). Read on for five ways being a Girl Scout will help your girl thrive.

1. She Will… Be Herself

Girls transform over their school years, and it’s critical that their self-esteem is cultivated and given opportunities to shine. In order to develop a strong sense of self, Girl Scouts acquaints girls with their “I will!” (rather than their “Can I?”) with girl-led programming for all grade levels, beginning with K-1 “Daisies,” grades 2-3 “Brownies,” and grades 4-5 “Juniors.” By trying and succeeding at something she might not have thought she could (like coding an app), confidence becomes a natural (and familiar) by-product.

2. She Will… Practice Positive Values

Girl Scouts is all about instilling the positive values needed to be a good person, a considerate friend and responsible citizen. This social-emotional learning (SEL) is a fantastic supplement to what girls learn in school, and Girl Scouts provides ample and age-appropriate settings where she can practice those values—as she camps out with her friends, tells her story in a creative way or thinks like a scientist on a nature walk.

3. She Will… Learn From Challenges

As Girl Scouts try new and different programming, they experience challenges as well as what it takes to overcome them. With Girl Scout Cookie goals, for instance, even the littlest CEOs learn how to make a sales pitch, describe flavors and answer questions about cost—and that perseverance pays off with added confidence and understanding. Not to mention the satisfying feeling of earning that next badge!

4. She Will… Make Lifelong Friends

As adults, it’s second nature to network and build connections that enrich our social and professional lives. Girl Scouts helps build that foundation for our daughters—giving them a sense of belonging across age ranges, cultures, and interests. As they program a robot or zip-line through the treetops, they are also forming invaluable friendships. Whether she becomes an architect, athlete, or artist, she is also a Girl Scout, a sister among a true sisterhood she can lean on in life.

5. She Will… Help Her Community

With lots of options for troops to pursue, girls continue to express their identities as they experience the outdoors, dial in STEAM skills, or select service opportunities. As young girls practice leadership in the program, they also have pathways to extend collaborative and critical-thinking skills to their community. On a Girl Scout Journey at any grade level, she can team up with friends to identify a problem, think up a sustainable solution and put a plan into action to make a difference!

Choose Girl Scouts for your G.I.R.L. The skills she learns today will help write the story of who she will be: a Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader. Join, volunteer, or support at girlscoutsla.org/join.

There’s no doubt seven-year-old Jeremiah has the coolest mom—because she just helped her team to win the World Cup!

Jessica McDonald isn’t just “mom goals,” she scores goals too. Even though she’s one of the best soccer players on the globe, this working mama still has time for her kiddo. As the only member of the team with a child, McDonald had the awesome opportunity to show her son what she does for a living on a world stage.

McDonald, who brought Jeremiah with her to watch the World Cup action in France, told the Associated Press, “He doesn’t fully understand, but at least he’s at an age right now where he’s actually going to remember this.” She also added, “He’s going to look back and be like, ‘Wow, I was there. Wow, my mom actually is cool—like she said.”

We’re not the only ones in total awe of this World Cup-winning mama. Her teammate Morgan Brian told the AP, “It’s pretty remarkable when you think about it and know how much we sacrifice and we put into this team and how much effort off the field that we have to give, and to know that her time is limited off the field and recovering and doing all the things that she needs to do. It’s pretty impressive that she’s here at this level.”

David Beckham & His 7-Year-Old Shared a Sweet World Cup Daddy-Daughter Moment

David Beckham is more than just eye candy. The retired soccer player is still a stellar athlete—and a standout dad!

Before the recent 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-finals, Beckham took his seven-year-old daughter Harper to meet England’s Lionesses, making him pretty much the best dad ever (at least in his kiddo’s eyes). Prior to the match, which took place at Stade Océane in Le Havre, France last Thursday, Beckham and Harper got a chance to wish England’s women’s team good luck. And, based on his Instagram account of the meeting, it looks like Beckham’s seven-year-old was just as excited about the game as her dad.

Beckham wrote, on Instagram, “I just want to say how very proud we all are of every single player, they are doing amazingly well and the whole country is behind them!!!” He also added, “As you can see Harper was so excited to meet the team & is so excited for the game.”

If you’ve got a little Jedi who can’t stop waving around that light saber, and you’d like to channel all that swordplay into something a little safer than beheading teddy (or younger siblings), then a fencing class is just the thing. After a class at the new Silverlake Fencing Club kids will be thrusting and parrying with the best of them (and they won’t even realize the amazing exercise they’re getting, you sneaky parent).

Perhaps you’ve never considered fencing as a sport for your kids, but it may be time to! It’s amazing exercise, for the brain as well as the body. If your young athletes are serious about other sports, fencing will complement and hone skills. And for lots of kids who haven’t yet found the sport that they “click” with, fencing, with the cool gear and epic battles, could be the activity to turn them from spectator to future Olympian. To learn more about this lesser known sport, we went to the expert, Silverlake Fencing’s founder and main teacher, Coach Karolyn Szot (she’s the one in the middle, in the photo below).

Why do you think fencing is a great sport for kids?
Coach Karolyn: There really isn’t another sport quite like fencing. When participating in any activity, kids should come to the decision that they are passionate about it.  Fencing is a personal sport and it is dependent not only on physical ability but also your mental state. It is more a game of strategy than strength, and you don’t have to be the most macho kid in gym class to dominate at the sport.

By starting the sport of fencing at a young age, it will help to develop skills such as discipline, coordination, and the ability to think on your feet.  It teaches kids to use their bodies as well as minds to analyze an opponent’s moves and respond in a coordinated way.

How/why did you start fencing?
Coach Karolyn: I saw the movie the Parent Trap when I was young and loved the fencing scene!  I enrolled in a fencing summer camp at a local YMCA and fell love with the sport, and then found a local fencing club. My fencing club really inspired me to compete in local competitions that grew into qualifying for the Junior Olympics, Nationals, North American Cups, and then a World Cup tournament. Ultimately, that led to my recruitment to Northwestern University’s Division I fencing team. (So, think of fencing as an investment towards college scholarships!)

What do you like about teaching kids, and introducing them to the sport?
Coach Karolyn: You can always tell when a child is going to be a great at fencer because they have both determination and enthusiasm; I love seeing how a kid’s face lights up when they hold a foil in their hand for the first time.  When there is someone who at first is scared, I love to give them the encouragement they need by showing them a secret move to try or taking them aside to work on perfecting a move so they become more confident. Sometimes all it takes is watching an exciting fencing bout and then everyone wants to get up and try it out. Kids are the best to teach!

What’s the Sword Called?
In modern fencing, you can use a foil, epée or saber.  Here, your kids will learn on using a foil.  The target area is the torso, and kids wear a white suit, chest plate, full mask and glove.  All equipment is provided in the class, though you may want to get your child their own glove (and they’re going to beg you for their own foil, guaranteed).

En Garde
Want to see a little sword fighting in action? Check it out by dropping into the Silverlake Flea Market on the second Saturday of any month. There you can watch a variety of fencing demonstrations (watch Coach Karolyn take on other expert fencers, or kids from class show off their skills, or even see kids working out with the adults).  The current kids class takes place on Thursday evenings at 5 p.m., and runs for 8 week sessions.  The first class is free, then the 8 week session is $178. Kids can also take a private class or get together a couple of friends to take a class together; Coach Karolyn will schedule times with you.

This beginner class introduces footwork, conditioning, basic techniques and skills, bouting tactics, etiquette and sportsmanship. Students will also dive into point practice and blade drills. It’s for kids 7-10.  She also offers classes for bigger kids, and adults, too.  Because admit it, you’ve always wanted to say, “Hello.  My name is Inigo Montoya.  You kill my father.  Prepare to die.”

Planes, trains, trucks and toys, they as loved by the girls as the boys! Luckily for Atlanta parents, there are lots of great ways to celebrate your birthday babe. Whether your little one wants to go fast, play sports, be outdoors or even artsy, we have rounded up some of the best birthday party ideas in Atlanta.

A Team Player
The little guys will surely get excited about a party centering around one of their favorite sports teams. The major sports teams of Atlanta, including baseball with the Atlanta Braves and Gwinnett Braves, and hockey with the Gwinnett Gladiators, all offer birthday party packages.  Most packages include a visit from the mascot, tickets for your party and a special birthday shout out during intermission.  Score!

A Fine Art
For our creative little guys, a music centered party could be perfect for your future little lead singer.  Groups such as Jason’s Music Party or Miss Gail’s Jam Band can customize a party perfect for even the youngest little tyke and their friends to jam out.  If painting is more your little one’s style, consider Farmhouse in the City.  This whimsical location hosts birthday parties in a barn where your birthday boy and his friends will interact with farm animals, get their face painted, and then do some painting on a canvas of their own to take home.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles
If your little guy feels the need for speed, there are plenty of great locations to help them go fast.  At Tiny Towne, your little guy and his friends will navigate through a tiny town in cars of their own.  Party packages include tokens for the cars and rides.  The Southeastern Railway Museum is a great place for all of our Thomas the Train loving lads.  Birthday parties are held in a railcar, and customizable train favors are also available.  For boys who want to fly, the Dekalb Peachtree Airport has a hangar for a party pavilion.  Your little guy can enjoy cake while watching planes come and go.  The onsite Downwind Restaurant also hosts small parties specifically for little ones.  If you’re looking for something to host at your house, Red Hot Fire Truck Events will not only bring a fire truck to you, but also provide truck rides, gear to wear and a squirt from the fire hose.

Walk on the Wild Side
Getting up and close with animals is easy to do in Atlanta.  Does your little guy want to feed an exotic animal and feel like they are on a safari?  Let the Zoo Atlanta host his birthday and he’ll have his choice of animal encounter and the use of the pavilion.  If the high seas speak to your little man, the Georgia Aquarium also has similar customizable birthday party packages that will help him celebrate as he visits the belugas, penguins and more.  Finally, take in some fresh air at the Chattahoochee Nature Center.  Birthday parties include nature hikes, choice of close animal encounter, and a green-themed party option.

Have a Ball
For the boys who just want to be on the move, consider an interactive sports party.  Several Atlanta locations offer parties at their site, or can come to you.  What about a soccer field in your own backyard?  Dragon Goal can bring an inflatable one to you and offer instruction and a scrimmage, or you can go to them and have your own World Cup match on the Atlanta Beltline.  Sportykes offers birthday parties for the younger set.  Have a party at your house or one of their locations and your little guys can learn baseball, basketball, football or soccer.  For something loud, fun, and little planning involved, a bowling party can be fun for the budding sports enthusiast.  Midtown Bowl has great packages for little ones.  Just for fun, the adults can have their own game in the next lane.

Out of this World
For a totally different birthday experience, a few Atlanta locations can provide a perfect alternate reality to host a birthday party.  Glow Galaxy is an indoor playground, but everything glows in the dark.  Chasing friends through tunnels and down slides has never been so exciting.  For the adrenaline and adventure seeking set, Tree Top Quest will host your birthday party high on zip lines, treetop obstacle courses and treasure hunts.  For a royal birthday party, try Medieval Times and be a part of the knight show and also get a birthday shout out.
