Like the city we hail from, Chicagoans have grit, and a play-hard, work-hard attitude. We know ketchup has zero business on a hot dog, distance is always measured in minutes, our favorite football teams are da Bears and anyone who crushes the Packers, and we have deep-rooted, generational Cubs or White Sox allegiances. (Go Cubbies!) Smalltalk centers around weather, as we stubbornly grind our way through all four seasons, sometimes in the same day. We’re a proud people. So, it’s a logical leap to stamp our kid with a distinctly Chicago name derived from our streets, athletes, politicians, and landmarks.
Addison
Many a wild time has been had on Addison Street as it's home to the popular Cubby Bear which sits across the street from the home of the Cubs, Wrigley Field, also on Addison Street. With no apparent connection to Chicago, it's a mystery as to why it was named after the brilliant British physician Thomas Addison, who discovered Addison's Disease.
Adler
Elgin native, Max Adler, was a concert violinist who gave up music to become VP of Sears Roebuck & Co. after marrying into the family that controlled the powerhouse company. After his retirement in 1928, he became a philanthropist who was key to the creation of the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, Adler Planetarium.
Al
Throwing a nod to our gangsta roots, how about a lil tot running around named Al, for the infamous, needs-no-intro Al Capone?
Anderson
Shout out to the northside's popular Andersonville, which hosts a massive shindig in honor of their Swedish immigrant roots, the annual Midsommarfest.
Chicago Bulls
Barack
No matter political alliances, you gotta admit, the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, is a guy you'd like to grab a beer, play b-ball and swap stories with. Not only was he the first African-American President in US history, he was also previously an Illinois State Senator who laid roots in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Benny
Chicago Bulls mascot "Benny" the Bull is one of the longest-tenured and most recognized mascots in sports history, getting his name from Ben Bentley, the Bull's first Public Relations Manager and Stadium Announcer.
Betty
Guys, we get to stake a claim on one of the most universally well-liked celebrities of all time, Betty White. It's a small claim, she moved from her Oak Park home when she was just over a year old, but we'll take it. She, in many ways, paved the way for women in entertainment and had a love story with Allen Ludden that's worthy of fairytales.
Briggs
Lance Briggs played his entire 12-year career as a Chicago Bear linebacker, which is great and all, but mostly Briggs would be an adorable hipster baby name. Just picture baby Briggs in his flannel buttondown, skinny jeans, busted-up Chucks, messy-hair-don't-care style, and oversized glasses for his 20/20 vision.
Burnham
Daniel Hudson Burnham — use any one of those names for baby — was responsible for many of our skyscrapers and was the Director of Works for the World's Columbia Exposition, a.ka. The White City. He is credited for the essence-capturing quote, "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not themselves be realized."
Chance the Rapper at Great Wolf Lodge Gurnee
Caray
You aren't allowed to call yourself a Chicagoan if you don't know the name Harry Caray. This absolute legend, in his signature thick wide-rimmed glasses, was a sports announcer who spent 11 years with the White Sox and the last 16 years of his career with the Cubs, famously leading fans in a spirited rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the 7th-inning stretch.
Catherine
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed over 17,000 buildings and 2,000 square feet and many locals like to hold on to the likely, utterly tall tale that it was caused by Catherine O'Leary's cow knocking over a lantern in her barn.
Chance
One of our most famous Chicagoans, Chance the Rapper, also happens to do a whole heck of a lot for Chicago kids with his charity SocialWorks. SocialWorks aims to empower youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement while fostering leadership, accessibility, and positivity within Chicago.
Chicago
Yep, totally a human name now, thanks to Kim and Kanye.
Clark
Not only is it the name of a highly-trafficked street that runs diagonally north-south for a solid 8 miles in Chicago, but Clark is the name of the Chicago Cubs beloved mascot. Clark Street is named for George Rogers Clark, an American War revolutionary who captured much of the Northwest Territory from the British. Cheerio, Clark!
You've likely found yourself on Damen Ave. one time or another. But how'd it come to be? It was renamed from its original Robey Street in honor of Father Arnold J. Damen, a Catholic priest who founded Holy Family Church and St. Ignatius High School and College, now known as Loyola University.
Elston
Daniel Elston was a British merchant who arrived in Chicago to make and sell soaps, candles and bricks — interesting combo, eh? He also served as an Alderman and Elston Avenue serves as an alternate route alongside the Kennedy Expressway, never straying too far from its path.
Ernie
Nicknamed Mr. Cub and Mr. Sunshine, some say former Cubs player Ernie Banks is the greatest player who ever picked up a bat and glove. He wasn't all brawn and no brains, however, as he was also the first black Ford Motor Company dealer in the United States.
Ferris
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller may not have really been ill, but Ferris makes for a pretty sick name, after the iconic 80s movie filmed in Chicago, Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Field
Marshall Field was the founder of Marshall Field and Company, renowned for its level of quality and customer service, and provided funding for the Field Museum of Natural History and land for University of Chicago. For some nostalgic Chicagoans, Macy's will forever and always be referred to as Fields.
Crown Fountain in Millennium Park
Grant
Grant Park, a.k.a. Chicago's front yard, is home to big-time notables Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum Campus and plays hosts to some of our most-attended fests, like Taste of Chicago, Lollapalooza, Chicago Blues Fest and Pride in the Park. It was named after the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, who along with former President Lincoln, led the Union Army to a victory over the Confederates in the American Civil War.
Ida
Ida B. Wells was an African-American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the Civil Rights Movement, having been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War at the age of 16. She was arguably one of the most famous black women during her time, working to combat prejudice and fight for the equality of African-American women. We are obsessed with this Chicago name for obvious reasons.
Jackson
The southside's Jackson Park, named in honor of 7th US President Andrew Jackson, was developed to host the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 and is potentially the future site of the Barack Obama Presidential Center.
Former John Hancock views via Maria Chambers
Jane
Born in the Lakeview neighborhood, absolute legend, Jane Bryne became the first female elected to the office of Mayor in the US in 1979, at a time when Chicago was the 2nd largest city in the country.
John
As the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock wasn't a Chicagoan, but the skyscraper that up until 2018 bore his name was built as the second tallest in the world on Michigan Ave. in 1968. It was featured in Poltergeist III and was home to the late great Chris Farley, who passed away in his residence on the 60th floor.
Jordan
MJ. Good ole #23, Michael Jordan. Everybody knows him, he made basketball-lovers out of everyone with his out-of-this-world skill, infectious mode of play and raw talent. Arguably the best that ever played, depending on who you ask, producing some pretty sweet gear during his career to boot.
Lake Michigan views via Maria Chambers
Kingston
We all know Kingston Mines is a world-famous blues club that has hosted legends in the industry, with performances 7 nights a week that go into the wee morning hours. But, did you know it was home to the first-ever performance of the Grease musical in 1971? This fierce Chicago name is a favorite.
Lake
Besides our stunning city skyline, pretty much the most visually stunning in the world, Lake Michigan and its beaches make Chicago a rather swell special place to live. It's one of the five Great Lakes of North America and the only one that sits wholly in the United States.
Lincoln Park Zoo via Maria Chambers
Lincoln
Lincoln Park, Lincoln Park Zoo, Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln Avenue, everywhere you look a Lincoln. Near Lake and Wacker sits a marker commemorating the location where Abraham Lincoln won the nomination for the presidency at the 1860 Republican Convention. Pay a visit to the Chicago History Museum if you're interested in diving more into Lincoln's history, Chicago and beyond.
Logan
Logan Square has quickly risen to be one of the favorite neighborhoods in Chicago, with restaurants that rival West Loop favorites. Its namesake, John A. Logan was an American soldier who served in the Mexican-American War, a Union General in the American Civil War and served the state as a Senator and a Congressman. And, you owe an annual three-day weekend partially to him, as he's regarded as the most important figure in the movement to recognize Memorial Day as a national holiday. We love this Chicago name for boys, girls, and even pets.
Lou
Chicago is known for its pizza, and we all have a passionate favorite. And Lou Malnati's undoubtedly tops a whole lotta lists. Deep dish Lou's? Yes, please!
Morton Arboretum
Maggie
Maggie Daley was the wife of Chicago's longest-serving mayor, Mayor Richard M. Daley, who held the position for 22 years. Well known for dodging the spotlight, but staying highly involved, she started the successful After School Matters non-profit that provides high school teens with after-school and summer opportunities in the arts, leadership, sports and STEM fields. In her honor, Chicago also has one of the coolest urban parks in the country with both lake and city views, mini-golf, a climbing wall, skating ribbon, green space and climbing structures, Maggie Daley Park.
Macaulay
Instant holiday classic, Home Alone, starring Macauley Culkin was filmed in a Winnetka home, the Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park and the famous airport scene was shot in Chicago O'Hare Airport.
Morton
"When it rains, it pours," Morton Salt's motto and accompanying Morton Salt Girl on their logo is one of the 10 most recognized symbols in the US. Joy Morton, the company's founder, also established Morton Arboretum, the 1,700-acre botanical garden situated in Lisle that sees hundreds of thousands of visitors and hikers a year. He's also the son of J. Sterling Morton, who founded Arbor Day.
Ogden
You can ride Ogden Avenue from the Near West Side all the way to Naperville. We wouldn't suggest it, but you could. Bonus points if you know where its name came from? Chicago's first mayor, William B. Ogden, served a one-year term beginning in 1837, was a founder of the Chicago Board of Trade, designed the first swing bridge over the Chicago River and donated the land for Rush Medical Center.
Oprah
How lucky are we that Oprah chose Chicago to host her now-iconic Oprah Winfrey show? She has amassed a beautifully positive legacy that will transcend generations, and any kid would be lucky to carry her name. But, boy, are those some big stilettos to fill. This Chicago name will definitely get you noticed.
Oscar
My bologna has a first name, O-S-C-A-R, and your kid could, too! German immigrant, Oscar Mayer made his way to Chicago and laid the groundwork for one of the most well-known names in the food industry on the near-northside. And blessed the USA with the super dope Weinermobile and the longest-running tv commercial to date that starred a 4-year-old singing about bologna.
Chicago River via Mercury River Cruises
Payton
Called the greatest football player he'd ever seen, and even greater human, by Mike Ditka, Walter Payton played all 13 of his career seasons with the Bears as a running back. His legacy includes the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Walter Payton Award.
Rand
William Rand opened a printing shop in 1856 and two years later hired Irish Immigrant Andrew McNally to work for $9/week, focusing their efforts on printing tickets and timetables for Chicago's railroad industry. In 1868 they officially launched Rand, McNally & Co. and became the largest and most-reputable map publishers in history. They became the first major map publisher to adopt a system of numbered highways and erected many of the roadside highway signs still used today.
Randolph
Randolph Street runs through the West Loop and is home to some of Chicago's most well-known and loved restaurants, like Girl & the Goat, Little Goat Diner, Au Cheval and Bar Siena. It got its name from one of Chicago's first city planners, James Thompson, who may have named it after his home county, Randolph County, Illinois. But, your guess is as good as ours.
River
The Chicago River runs right through the city and is one of the reasons Chicago is of geographic importance, as it is a link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Basin, and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. It has a place of honor on the Flag of Chicago represented by two horizontal blue stripes. It's also a feat of civil engineering, as the direction of its flow was reversed in 1900 in an attempt to protect the city's water supply.
Maria Chambers
Rizzo
Since being traded to the Cubs in 2012, Anthony Rizzo has made a big impact on Chicago. Not only is he a three-time All-Star first basemen and Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor, through his non-profit Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, but he has also donated over $4M to Lurie's Children's Hospital.
Robey
What is now Damen Avenue, was once Robey Avenue, named after James Robey, who operated a roadhouse near Madison and present-day Damen. Don't worry though, the name is still alive, with The Robey Hotel sitting at the intersections of Damen, Milwaukee and North Avenues, serving up sick city views.
Robin
There will never be another quite like the late, great Robin Williams. His eyes twinkled with a beautiful mischievousness and his wit lightning quick. Robin attended elementary and junior high in Lake Forest before his Ford Motor Co. exec dad got transferred to Detroit. You can see a mural dedicated to Williams at Bucktown's Concord Music Hall.
Roscoe
Tis a mystery how Roscoe Village and Roscoe Street received their names, but Roscoe Village is often referred to as a village within a city because of its small-town feel and huge love the residents have for their little slice of a big city.
Rose
D. Rose is no longer a Bulls player, but this Chicago native was a prominent fixture on the team when he wore the jersey. When he called the United Center home, he was named Rookie of the Year and, at the age of 22, was the youngest player to ever win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award.
Dominican American Sammy Sosa spent much of his baseball career with the Chicago Cubs, reaching his 400th run milestone faster than any other player in the National League, securing his place as one of the game's best all-time hitters.
Shedd
Sitting right next to Lake Michigan within Museum Campus, Shedd Aquarium was the first inland aquarium with a permanent saltwater fish collection and was a gift from John Graves Shedd, President and Chairman of the Board for Marshall Field & Company.
Sheridan
A drive along Sheridan Road and Lake Michigan through the northern suburbs when the leaves are boasting fall colors is extra special, add it to your Chicago bucket list if you have yet to do. Philip Henry Sheridan was a general in the Civil War who coordinated military relief efforts following the Great Chicago Fire.
Thompson
The James R. Thompson Center serves as a secondary capital for the state and was named after the 37th, and longest-running at 14 years, governor of the State of Illinois.
Walt
The pioneer of American animation who holds the record for most Academy Awards won by an individual at 22, Walt Disney, was born in the Hermosa neighborhood.
Willis
Perhaps it's different strokes for different folks, but "Wha'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" is EXACTLY right. To die harders, it will always be the Sears Tower, but Willis Tower is technically the official name of the 2nd tallest building in the United States.
Wrigley
This one's pretty obvi, with our Cubbies flying the 'W' at one of the most iconic ballfields in the country, Wrigley Field. Even if you don't like baseball, a game watched at Wrigley is pretty darn special.
Make sure to capture all the adventures with your little Chicagoan—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.
Fads come and go, but dinosaurs are here to stay! Kids just can’t get enough of them, and lucky for you, there are plenty of dinosaur attractions from coast to coast. From silly cartoons to serious science, we’ve found over 20 of the best dino-mite places to discover with your little paleontologists including state parks, theme parks, children’s museums, and even a dinosaur-themed restaurant that features its own “Build-A-Dino” center.
Children’s museums are fun regardless of where you go, but the Chicago Children’s Museum gets a lot of praise for its “cool” Dinosaur Expedition. Among other things, it features a recreation of the real Saharah expedition where Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno discovered a new type of dinosaur. It also features a life-size skeleton of Suchomimus (sue-co-MY-muss), an excavation pit to dig for bones, and an opportunity to learn what it would be like to be part of Paul’s expedition team.
Dino Valley at LEGOLAND California Resort | Carlsbad, CA
This brand-new land just opened at LEGOLAND California Resort and we are super excited! Here you can ride two new rides, the Explorer River Quest and DUPLO® Little Dino Trail, as well as the beloved Coastersaurus dinosaur ride. Build your own dino in the interactive dino build and play area, and meet all the new characters.
Stonerose Interpretive Center & Eocene Fossil Site | Republic, WA
What’s better than getting to dig for your own fossils? This spot in WA lets fossil diggers of all ages look for and even take home fossils they find while they are there. Just wait until you see their eyes light up when they discover something that’s 50 million years old!
Tate Geological Museum | Casper, WY
Casper, WY is home to this awesome (and free!) museum that the whole family will enjoy. Little paleontologists will be amazed when they spot Dee the Mammoth: Discovered nearby in 2006, Dee is part of the museum’s Pleistocene Exhibit where kids can learn the difference between mammoths, mastodons, and elephants. Little visitors will especially love visiting the Dino Den where they can explore touchable fossil casts, do fossil rubbings, and play with dinosaur toys.
Dinosaur National Monument | Jensen, UT
Welcome to a dino digger’s dream. Over 1,500 prehistoric bones are still encased in the rock at Dinosaur Quarry exhibit hall on the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument, and visitors can view reconstructed dinosaur fossils—like Allosaurus and a baby Stegosaurus. The quarry gives kids a view of the fossils in their natural state (instead of removed, cleaned, and reassembled), and when you’ve checked out the dino-box there are plenty of other activities (including hiking and kayaking on the Green River) to explore.
Burke Museum | Seattle, WA
Unlike other museums that house their dinosaurs in the basement, the Burke Museum features their dinos proudly on the top floor. Exhibits focus on fossils from Washington state including giant whales, creatures from the ice age, and more. Visitors can get an up-close look at what the researchers are working on every day with large glass windows looking inside their laboratories.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom | Orlando, FL
Most people are familiar with Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which is one of four Disney theme parks in Orlando, but not everyone is aware that the park features an entire land dedicated to Jurassic animals. What DinoLand U.S.A. lacks in science, it makes up for in the form of fun. This “land” is home to the thrill ride, “Dinosaur,” where riders will travel back in time, ride in a Jeep, and attempt to rescue a dinosaur before a meteor strikes. What could go wrong?
DinoLand U.S.A. also features a replica of the T-Rex “Dino-Sue” which is pretty amazing. However, Mom and Dad might be more impressed with the open-air “fossil fun site” known as The Boneyard, a place themed around a dinosaur dig giving the little explorers time to burn off some energy.
Field Station: Dinosaurs | Derby, KS and Leonia, NJ
With two dino-mite locations, the Field Stations take families on tours full of mystery, surprise, and over 40 life-sized realistic (and moving!) dinos. Get up close and personal along the trail and take part in over 30 live shows, games, and activities in the parks. Here you can dig for fossils, learn about a dinosaur’s diet during a live musical show, and play a game of Dinosaur Discovery miniature golf. As they say, “Science had never been this fun, this scary, or this big!”
The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles boasts a 14,000-square-foot Dinosaur Hall to show off their dinos. You need that much space to present the world’s only Tyrannosaurus rex growth series, and you’ll also find a Stegosaurus and the 25-foot tall Triceratops making their debut here, too. The museum is also home to a Dino Lab, where you can see their staff working on real fossils and get your hands on some other ones that are said to be between 66 and 120 million years old! Of course, what will really thrill your kids is the Dinosaur Encounters, where large-scale puppets (think huge) come “alive” to give a better sense of what living with prehistoric creatures would be like.
National Museum of Natural History | Washington DC
The David H. Koch Hall of Fossils–Deep Time allows guests to travel through ancient ecosystems to witness the evolution of life and see firsthand over 700 fossil specimens including early insects, reptiles, mammals, a Tyrannosaurus rex, Diplodocus, and a woolly mammoth. The exhibit shares how the choices humans make today will affect our future (a good lesson for us all).
Arizona Museum of Natural History | Mesa, AZ
Located in the center of Downtown Mesa, the 80,000-square-foot Arizona Museum of Natural History offers plenty to see, learn, and explore for young dino enthusiasts and historians of all ages. Strongly referred to as the “Dinosaur Museum,” here visitors can admire their collection of nearly 60,000 objects, snap a selfie with a T-Rex, pan for gold, and discover so much more. To simulate some of the perilous encounters faced by these ancient beasts, a “flash flood” sends rushing water cascading down a three-story mountain full of life-size animatronic dinosaurs every 23 minutes.
Dinosaur World | Cave City, KY
With more than 150 life-size replica dinosaurs, this outdoor museum is the perfect place for kids to be kids, while they learn about paleontology. What’s more, the museum’s “boneyard” offers them a chance to uncover a life-size stegosaurus buried under the sand. If the weather isn’t cooperating, Dinosaur World has an indoor Prehistoric Museum that features displays of cast and real fossils.
The world-famous roadside attraction may not be the most scientific of spots, but it sure is fun! Climb up Dinny the 150-foot replica Apatosaurus, or take a peek out of Mr. Rex’s mouth. Check out the animatronic dinos in the open-air museum, pan for gold, or spend time in the totally diggable sand pit. Oh, and snapping that iconic pic of the fam, the mountains, and the dinos? A must.
Dinosaur Valley State Park | Glen Rose, TX
Follow the path of a dinosaur battle from millions of years ago. The Paluxy River is home to over 1,500 dinosaur tracks, the newest one being exposed in summer 2023. The extremely popular, and fairly easy hike takes dino hunters along the creek bed, in search of the tracks under the water. One of the most famous trackways ever discovered, a section of it can be seen at the American Museum of Natural History.
Jurassic World Ride | Universal Studios Hollywood, Studio City, CA
Universal Studios Hollywood recently upgraded the Jurassic Park ride into something bigger and better and inspired by the Jurassic World movie franchise. Many of the dinosaurs featured in the original ride have returned with all-new technology. You’ll love entering an immersive land and coming face-to-face with the Indominus rex as she stalks you through the jungle. Get caught in the fray as she’s confronted by her archrival, the Tyrannosaurus rex, in an epic battle for the ages.
The Field Museum of Natural History | Chicago, IL
The Field Museum was already a hot spot for dino fans even before SUE—the most complete T-Rex skeleton ever discovered—arrived in 2000. Evolving Planet takes guests on a journey through four million years on Earth; there are videos, hands-on interactive displays, and an expanded dinosaur hall. SUE, of course, is the highlight and doesn’t disappoint.
Great Plains Dinosaur Museum & Field Station | Malta, MT
The Great Plains Dinosaur Museum may be small, but it’s mighty. Home to Leonardo, the world’s best-preserved dinosaur, it’s also one of the best places for those who want to get dirty, dino-style. Kids ages 5-11 can sign up for the Junior Paleo Field Experience: three hours at a real dinosaur dig with the pros, then back to the lab to process, analyze, and write up their finds. Not to worry— there’s plenty of hands-on stuff for the smaller set, including their own dig pit outside the museum.
The Prehistoric Gardens | Port Orford, OR
If you’re up for a road trip to the Oregon Coast and want a fun pit stop that is more Pee Wee’s Big Adventure than Smithsonian, this place is for you. It’s a campy, cool dinosaur attraction with dinosaur sculptures looming amid a gorgeous, lush Pacific Northwest forest. In short, it’s awesome. While the dinos aren’t real, the ancient Oregon forest is.
What a great idea! The T-Rex Café is part restaurant, part museum but all fun—and very popular. Throughout the restaurant, you’ll find large animatronic dinosaurs (“Honey, we’ll find a table over by the T-Rex…”), exotic plants, aquariums, hands-on educational activities in the Paleo Zone, a Discovery Dig fossil sandpit, the Discovery Creek water mill where kids can pan for precious gems and stones, and “meteor showers” that take place every 20 to 30 minutes. They even have a “Build-a-Dino” by Build-A-Bear Workshop. Parents might want to check out the Octopus Bar (with moving tentacles and jellyfish) too.
Dinosaur State Park | Rocky Hill, CT
200-million-year-old Dilophosaurus tracks—2,000 of ‘em. That’s what, in 1968, was discovered in Rocky Hill, CT. Today, the trackway is a protected National Landmark, and visitors can check out some 500 tracks in the Exhibit Center’s geodesic dome. Little visitors will dig in fossil boxes, investigate rocks and crystals, work on puzzles, read books, or make a Dinosaur Tracks bookmark in the Discovery Room, while nature nuts will love the flora and fauna-filled (only two miles!) trail around the center.
Dinosaur Park | Rapid City, SD
Dinosaur Park in Rapid City has celebrated the state’s paleontological history since its opening in 1936. The public (and free) space boasts life-size concrete dinosaur figures the kids can climb, and the 360-degree view of the Badlands is worth the uphill trek necessary to reach the park. The park is a must-see spot if you are in the area!
Wyoming Dinosaur Center | Thermopolis, WY
There are over 30 mounted skeletons and hundreds of displays and dioramas in the museum, all designed to educate and thrill even the tiniest dino fans. It’s hard to say exactly what the star attraction, “Jimbo” the Supersaurus is, or the real-life dig action that happens from late spring into early fall. Families are encouraged to sign up, and if anyone finds a fossil, it’ll be labeled with their name and displayed at the museum!
Nash Dinosaur Track Site | South Hadley, MA
Billed as the best place in North America to see dino tracks, this Western Mass. wayside dinosaur attraction was started in 1939 by Carlton S. Nash and is still in the family today. Formerly known as Nash Dino Land, think more of a roadside stop than a museum. Though it’s not exactly a state-of-the-art facility, very little has changed in 70+ years, which is part of its indelible charm. Since the 1930s it has produced thousands of dinosaur track impressions, many of which are now housed in museums. The Nash Dinosaur Track Site and Rock Shop will delight all your rock hounds and pint-sized paleontologists.
Who wouldn’t want to meet “Rexy” from the Night at the Museum movies? Not only that, but you’ll also find the 122-foot-long Titanosaur, a Velociraptor, and the Triceratops, among thousands of other super cool specimens. Families with kids ages 5-12 should stop by the Discovery Room, an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at the museum, where visitors can assemble a life-sized cast skeleton of Prestosuchus, handle real fossils, and even unearth an Oviraptor nest in a re-creation of a paleontology field site.
Jurassic Park at the Islands of Adventure | Orlando, FL
“It’s lunchtime and you’re on the menu,” teases the Jurassic Park River Adventure ride. Sure, the water cruise starts innocently enough, but soon, your family will be bumped off course and will float toward the restricted area of Jurassic Park. And while you’re there, be sure to check out the hands-on activity center, where kids can test their DNA to see what kind of dinosaur they would be, answer dino trivia, examine dinosaur eggs, and, if they are lucky, watch a baby velociraptor “hatch.” There’s also Camp Jurassic, a prehistoric playground perfect for families with kids of all ages. You can also let the kids navigate suspension bridges, slides, and Thunder Lizard Trail and even try their hand at the water cannons in the containment paddock.

Bright lights, big city indeed! Treat your family to a night at one of New York City’s best holiday lights displays
The beloved New York City holiday season is here! That means lots of festive light shows, Christmas displays, and decorations galore! Walk or drive through spectacular light sculptures, with miles of displays and millions of lights to marvel at. Whether you plan to travel to the light shows outside of the city, or stick to one of NYC’s classics—like Macy’s famous department store windows, botanical gardens and zoos, or, of course, Dyker Heights in Brooklyn—there’s something for everyone on this list of holiday lights in NYC in 2023.
This popular animal-themed light and lantern display returns to the zoo starting Nov. 17. See 360 lanterns representing almost 90 animal and plant species from around the globe. This year, 70 new lanterns representing 30 new animal species will make their debut at the zoo. Also new this year is an enhanced light show for dazzling photo-ops, a holiday tree show that features synchronized musical lights, and a walk through an animal-themed Light Tunnel for more light shows.
But the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is more than a display: activities and entertainment include ice-carving demonstrations, stilt-walkers, puppet shows, a holiday train. and even treats like s’mores.
This walk-through light experience debuted in 2020, and it’s back and bigger this season. Glow is billed as “an outdoor color and light experience," and has expanded its space to encompass even more of the NY Botanical Garden's grounds. Expect washes of brilliant color, thousands of dazzling LEDs, illuminated plant stories, ice-carving demonstrations, and whimsical, picture-perfect installations that reflect the surrounding gardens and collections. Make it a double feature and check out the popular New York Botanic Garden Holiday Train Show while you’re there. (The garden offers a combo ticket.) Or stop by the Bronx Night Market Holiday Pop-Up for a snack and some hot cocoa.
This after-dark, illuminated spectacular lightscape celebrates the beauty of nature in winter. Follow a festive one-mile trail winding through the garden’s 52-acre landscape, animated by dazzling light, color, and sound. Over a million lights and more than 18 distinct works of light art will be on view, among them the Cathedral of Light tunnel and a Fire Garden on Lily Pool Terrace.

Plus, Girl Scouts get a discount on tickets, and two badges!
If you prefer to leave the car, a new walking section has been added this year. Stop by the Enchanted Forest Walk-thru at Southaven County Park to take a walk through a magical world of glowing trees and animals, hot cocoa, and a photo-op with Santa in a heated tent.
Peace, Love & Lights at Bethel Center for the Arts
Relive the magic of Woodstock with Peace, Love & Lights, a beautiful drive-through light show located on the grounds of the famous festival. Drive through over a mile of light displays, including a 120-foot "Twinkle Tunnel," the fun '70s-themed Groovy Way, an Enchanted Forest, Santa's Workshop, and more. For additional fees, you can have a buffet-style dinner with Santa (plus snag a selfie!), watch ice carving demonstrations, toast s'mores, visit the Woodstock museum, and build some gingerbread houses with adult refreshments for the over 21 members of the family.
It’s a New York Christmas tradition to head to the big department stores to not only shop, but to check out the festive displays, which draw crowds all season long.
The holiday windows at Macy's feature a little blue reindeer named Tiptoe, who needs a little help learning to fly. Follow the journey of discovery and triumph as this very special reindeer takes to the sky to help Santa Claus bring joy to millions of children. Or, make your own light show by making a holiday "wish"—donate $1 or more to light up the canopy in a motion-controlled show, or use the "Maestro!" feature to conduct the lights in a pattern that's unique to you. Donations this year will be benefiting behavioral health services for youth and adults in NYC and on Long Island who are struggling with substance and alcohol abuse.

Keep reading to get the scoop on what to do in Fredericksburg, TX with kids.
See the Hill Country
Gabby Cullen
Hike Enchanted Rock Enchanted Rock is the second-largest granite dome in the country, and one of the best things to do with kids in Fredericksburg, TX. There are over eight miles of trails to explore within the park; you can spend the day hiking around the base on the loop trail. If you have older kids, hike to the summit for 360 views of Hill Country. Look for the vernal pools that are home to fragile Fairy Shrimp, let the kids do somegeocaching, or stay until the sun goes down and watch the stars. Enchanted Rock is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, and you can usually see the Milky Way on clear nights. If you are interested in rock climbing, we recommend booking something with Texas Climbing Adventures, as they offer family friendly expeditions.
Visit Pedernales Falls State Park Down the road in Johnson City lies a popular state park that's known for the river that makes its way through huge slabs of limestone. Especially fun during the summer months, you can picnic, tube, and swim in the river or simply admire the waterfalls.
Visit Wildseed Farms Texas is famous for its wildflowers, so it’s no surprise that one of the largest wildflower farms in the United States is in Fredericksburg. Open all year, Wildseed Farms is home to 200 acres of flowers. Head for the meadows, where you’ll find a stroller-accessible half-mile walking trail surrounding the trial and display gardens and the seasonal butterfly gardens. Be sure to stop by the Brewbonnet Biergarten, where you can sample locally-made jam, jelly, and salsa, grab a beer, and buy fresh peach ice cream for the kids. Admission is free.
Walk the Live Oak Wilderness Trail This easy one-mile loop, located inside Lady Bird Johnson Park, will give kids views of lakes, birds, and flowers local to the Texas Hill Country. The trail is also connected to the Vista Loop trail, which has a butterfly habitat and a geology and rock exhibit.
Go to Luckenbach This world-famous Texas dance hall is always family-friendly, according to longtime property manager Virgil. “There are folks who come here now as adults that grew up sleeping under the picnic benches and playing underneath those oak trees,” he says. Indeed, the venue is welcoming, with a General Store that sells everything from souvenirs to toys, and the Feed Lot, which offers kid-friendly fare like funnel cakes, grilled cheese, cherry limeade, and more. There’s live music every day of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and whether it’s a free show or if you need a ticket, the experience is the same—totally unforgettable.
Watch the Bats From mid-May to mid-Oct., head for Old Tunnel State Park, where millions of Mexican free-tail bats hang their hats for the season. Snag a seat in the upper deck for no charge or from Thurs.-Sun., reserve a seat in the lower viewing area for $5 per person, and wait for the bats to emerge at sunset in search of food and water.

Go to the Peach Haus One of our favorite things to do in Fredericksburg, TX with kids is to visit the Peach Haus. The original location of Fischer & Wieser (you've probably tried their flagship Raspberry Chipotle Sauce), this spot a few blocks down from Main Street is very kid-friendly. Browse the store for the marinades, sauces, and preserves they are known for, and then wander to the back, where, on weekends, you can buy a bottle of wine (from their vineyard) and a charcuterie board before you settle down in an Adirondack chair that overlooks a pod. Watch the sun go down, let your kids play, and enjoy a slice of classic Fredricksburg at this hidden gem.
Walk Main Street Fredericksburg is known for its shopping, and while many shops are probably best left for adult-only weekends, there are a few that are perfect for kids. Legendary Dooley’s 5 & 10 is filled with toys, trinkets, and other old-fashioned goodies that’ll keep little ones busy. There are also sweet shops like Lone Star Candy Bar, Big Pop’s Popcorn Co., and Clear River Ice Cream and Bakery, which serves up more than 40 flavors of ice cream and incredibly soft, chewy cookies.
Catch a live show at the Rockbox Theater Live music is back, and there's no better spot than Rockbox Theater. Located right around the corner from Main Street, its unique design makes for incredible acoustics. If you'd like to bring the kids, there are often 4 p.m. shows for fun concerts like a Beatles tribute and dueling piano show. If you don't want to bring the kids, shoot for the 8 p.m. version of any of the fun live events!
Ride the Trolley Do you want a guided tour of the city? Hop on the trolley for everything from a haunted history tour to a historic Fredericksburg tour. It’s the perfect way to get around: you can leave your car behind and not worry about parking! Prices range from $9 for kids to $20 for adults and up.
Learn the Local History
Courtesy Steve Rawls
One of the most engaging things to do in Fredericksburg, TX with kids is to visit the local museums.
The German Settlers German settlers founded Fredericksburg in 1846, and a rich culture remains. Right in the middle of downtown, at the Pioneer Museum, kids can sit at desks in the one-room schoolhouse and watch living history demonstrations. Little Pioneers, a family-favorite monthly event includes activities like blacksmithing, making ice cream, making a miniature patchwork quilt, and more. During Spring Break, something is happening every day! At theSauer-Beckman Living History Farm, located at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, you can watch interpreters perform household chores, cook over an open hearth, farm, and even blacksmith, just like German settlers would have done in the 1800s.
World War II Fredericksburg is the hometown of World War II Navy General Chester Nimitz. The National Museum of the Pacific War has over six acres of exhibits, including full-size planes, hands-on, interactive displays (currently closed due to COVID restrictions), and an impressive amount of curated war artifacts. Two blocks down the street from the museum is the Pacific Combat Zone, which has more planes and a boat, and a recently renovated area where live, reenacted battle scenes (recommended for kids ages 6 & up.) are performed on eight weekends throughout the year.
Eat the Food
Gabby Cullen
One of the best things to do in Fredericksburg, TX with kids is to eat! There are plenty of family friendly spots to try. Our favorite is Tubby's Ice House. It's within walking distance of Main Street and offers locally-sourced food including homemade tortillas, Texas beef and locally-grown vegetables, plus there are vegan-friendly menu options. There's also an open patio and a play space perfect for families. If it's a pizza you want, try West End Pizza. It boasts an outdoor patio and a kids' game room with air hockey and arcade games
For breakfast, a local gem is Caliche Coffee Bar & Roastery. Family-owned and operated, there's an outdoor space for antsy kids, and their menu includes yummy items like avocado toast for the parents and whole wheat bagels with peanut butter and jelly for the littles. Another great spot is Emma + Ollie, where it's all about fresh ingredients, saying no to processed foods, and serving up classics like biscuits, banana bread and more.
You can have a sit-down dinner with kids in Fredericksburg, too! At the locally-owned and operated Burger Burger, you can enjoy ample outside seating. For an incredible wine pairing experience, go to Cabernet Grill, where the on-staff sommelier will pair your meal (made with local, Texas-inspired ingredients) with Texas wines, many of them grown and made locally. The atmosphere is casually elegant, so while families are welcome, this might a good choice for when you've got older kids in tow.
Lodging and Travel Details
Gabby Cullen
If you're looking for something within walking distance of downtown Fredericksburg, we recommend the family-owned Lodge Above Town Creek. They have plenty of suites to accommodate families, and they offer a fantastic picnic basket breakfast. There's a pool perfect for the summer months, and during the cooler months, you'll be drawn to the cozy covered pavilion with couches, complimentary coffee and tea and a roaring fire.
We also recommend staying at Fredericksburg Inn & Suites. Located on five acres near Barons Creek, not only does the hotel have a pool (heated for year-round swimming) with a slide, but it also boasts an outdoor fireplace and TV area. Activities include outdoor movies, fresh cookies are made daily, and you can explore the creek and outdoor areas.
