Ah, summertime. The sun is shining, the weather is warm, and the kids are ready to hit the beach. But wait. Before you head out to soak up some rays, let’s talk about something important: sunscreen for kids. As parents, we all know that protecting your little ones from the sun’s harmful rays is crucial. With so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. Fear not, because we’ve done the research and compiled a list of the best sunscreens for kids.
As much as we all love the sun, it’s no secret that too much exposure can lead to serious health problems like melanoma. This is especially true for kids who have sensitive skin and are more susceptible to damage from UV rays. So, grab your beach bag and pick up the sunscreen—your kids will thank you later.

These are the two biggest mistakes parents make when treating diaper rash
Opening your baby’s diaper to find an angry rash staring back at you just plain sucks. Not only is their poor skin going to be tender and painful for a few days, but you’re also going to have sticky white diaper cream under your nails for the foreseeable future—a crucial, protective barrier that your diaper will promptly absorb no matter how much you apply. But not anymore! Dr. Natasha Burgert, a pediatrician on Instagram, is here to share the best diaper rash treatment, and just in time for winter virus season, when babies are particularly prone to getting those seriously gnarly rashes that are so miserable and hard to treat.
Burgert says there are two big mistakes parents tend to make when treating serious diaper rashes: They don’t use enough cream and they wipe too much of it off during diaper changes. Here’s what she says to do instead.
1. Pile on the diaper cream.
First, you’ll need the right diaper cream. “For the worst diaper rashes, you need a protective layer that’s going to be able to withstand multiple diaper changes,” she explains. “So this is when you reach for a diaper cream that has the highest percentage of zinc oxide you can buy.”
But you’ll also need the right amount of cream. On a butternut squash, she demonstrates how to apply the paste: by using cotton rounds and slathering it on in a thick layer “like cake frosting.”
2. Cover the cream with cotton pads.
“Then leave the cotton on the sticky cream to help it stay on the skin and not be absorbed by the diaper,” she says. “At the next diaper change, remove the layer of dirty cream and cotton,” but don’t remove all of the cream. You actually want to leave a thin layer of it behind—the thinnest layer that was touching your baby’s skin. Then you add a new layer of cream (and cotton rounds) on top.
“This leaves the skin continually protected through the diaper change, allowing the skin to heal,” Burgert says.
In the caption, she notes that before a bath, you should remove all of the diaper cream with cotton rounds soaked in mineral oil, then clean the diaper rash area using gentle soap and water. And, of course, if things aren’t getting better, give your baby’s doctor a call.
You never know when your next raging diaper rash will strike, but armed with this knowledge, you’ll be ready to face it head on.
The leaves aren’t the only thing changing this time of year! Your kiddos’ skin is already super sensitive and the dry, chilly weather can be ultra irritating to their delicate complexions. With so many products to choose from, we know figuring out what’ll work best can be daunting. We’ve rounded up our favorite products from Pipette that we’ve been keeping on hand so you can skip the guesswork! Did we mention that Pipette is currently offering 30% off your first order? Just use code SQUALANE30 and stock up! Reach for these goodies all season long and beyond to keep those little noses and toeses in tip-top shape.
A solid skincare routine starts with a solid foundation, and Pipette's Baby Shampoo + Wash is the first step to skin TLC! Including sugar-derived glycolipids (lipids that moisturize and aid in skin cell recovery), plant-based glycerine works to maintain soft skin, and renewable squalane (a skincare superhero all babies are born with), this Baby Shampoo + Wash is gentle enough to use daily (and gentle on the eyes!) without worrying abut overdrying. And with clean scent options like Rose + Geranium and our personal favorite, Vanilla + Ylang Ylang, as well as a Fragrance-Free formula, Pipette's Baby Shampoo + Wash will be a bathtub staple!
Not all lotions are created equal, and Pipette's Baby Lotion is top-tier. After soaping up with the Baby Shampoo + Wash, layer on the care with this lightweight blend of clean ingredients that help retain skin's moisture level and seal in the bathtime benefits. We can't get enough!
By now, we're used to making sure our kids keep their hands washed, especially in the last few years. We've also learned how fast little fingers get raw, red, and dry with repeated washing, and the fall weather can definitely irritate them even more. Enter Pipette's Hand Wash! Aloe and glycerine help attract moisture to the skin and the nontoxic and sulfate-free formula prevent that icky tight feeling. Throw in Pipette's 100% plant-derived bergamot and lemon scent for a fun zing with each wash and you'll want to make sure there's a bottle at every sink in the house!
Sometimes lotion isn't quite enough, especially in the cooler months, so make sure to scoop up Pipette's extra-rich Baby Balm! Forget greasy, petroleum-based balms; Pipette has created a velvety-soft formula that can be used anywhere and everywhere, as often as needed. TIP: Use Pipette Baby Balm on diaper lines, in those adorable skin rolls and wrinkles, knees and elbows, and wind-burned faces. Or, combine the Pipette Baby Lotion and Baby Balm together in your palm and smooth all over to super-charge your moisturizing method!
We're wild for wipes, and Pipette Baby Wipes lead the pack! Plant-based fibers and a gentle water-based formula make these a do-it-all must-have for the car, baby bags, bathrooms, and more!
Chafed, red, angry skin is never welcome, so we're making sure to include Pipette Diaper Rash Cream in our skincare arsenal. Seal out wetness and soothe irritated diaper areas with this petroleum- and lanolin-free cream that also helps to prevent future discomfort; a must for the fall!
No matter what time of year, sunscreen will always be a necessary skincare step. Pipette Mineral Sunscreen is lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing, so this ultra-important step takes no time at all and provides SPF 50 mineral, non-nano zinc oxide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection! (TIP: The non-comedogenic formula also means you can layer it over your facial moisturizer as your last step before makeup or heading out the door!)
Moisturizing is the name of the game in cold weather, and although mineral oil-based products aren't ideal, the Pipette Baby Oil formula is mineral oil-free and mimics the vernix (the first built-in moisturizer your baby is born with, courtesy of Mother Nature). It's fragrance-free and all-purpose, so keep it on-hand for massages, cradle-cap softening, body hydration, and more! (TIP: We've used Pipette Baby Oil to remove our makeup as the first step in our double-cleanse routine!)

Getting the news that you’re expecting is instant motivation to commit to a health and wellness routine. Those mama-bear instincts immediately kick in, and the desire to care for your growing baby is fierce and unwavering. While the intention for a healthy pregnancy is clear, discovering the best ways to stay on track isn’t always easy. We’ve rounded up 9 important tips for a healthy pregnancy.
photo: iStock
1. Get a dental cleaning. Your pearly whites might not be the first thing you think of when you’re creating a health plan for your pregnancy, but the increased hormones during pregnancy can affect your body’s response to plaque (the layer of bacteria on your teeth). Maintaining good dental hygiene at home and visiting your dentist while pregnant is extremely important.
Research has found a link between gum disease in pregnant women and premature birth with low birth weight. So make sure that both your teeth and your gums get extra care and attention while you’re expecting. Don’t forget to let your dentist or any other specialist you see while pregnant know you’re expecting.
2. Get proper nutrition. When you’re pregnant, you’re not just eating for two—you’re also consuming the vitamins and minerals for two! Focus on consuming nutrient-rich foods like fresh fruits and veggies, and consider supplementing your nutrition with a prenatal vitamin.
3. Avoid hyperpigmentation with broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen. The “mask of pregnancy,” clinically known as melasma, is a condition experienced by anywhere from 50% to 75% of women. It’s a specific form of hyperpigmentation that is most commonly associated with pregnancy. While you may have heard that it’s triggered by the increase in estrogen that happens when pregnant, you might not know that the condition is exasperated by sun exposure. That’s why it’s more important than ever to incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine while growing your bump.
Choosing the right sunscreen is also important. The FDA says that there’s enough current evidence to conclude that titanium dioxide and zinc oxide—ingredients that are used in mineral sunscreen products—don’t warrant the same health concerns as chemical sunscreen ingredients such as oxybenzone. So, to be safe, stick to mineral-based sun blockers while pregnant.

4. Eat small meals throughout the day to avoid heartburn. Those pesky pregnancy hormones are disrupting things again by causing the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus) to relax, allowing stomach acids to flow back up into the esophagus. This means that more than half of all pregnant women will experience heartburn.
Luckily, there are ways to combat heartburn before it hits. Doctors recommend eating several small meals each day (try one of these nourishing bowls) rather than large ones. Avoid fried, spicy or rich (fatty) foods, and try not to lie down directly after eating.
5. Stay hydrated with filtered water to reduce exposure to toxins. Don’t leave home without your water bottle! You’ll need more water than the average person, since water plays an important role in the healthy development of your baby. To play it extra safe, drink filtered water when possible to avoid lead, microorganisms, bacteria and other toxins. 6. Focus on pelvic mobility exercise to avoid diastasis recti. It’s tricky to say and even trickier to deal with: diastasis recti, a condition many women suffer from as a result of pregnancy in which the abdominal muscles separate. Before you hit the panic button, there are a few things you can do while pregnant, as well as moves you can do postpartum, to help avoid this from happening. Focus on pelvic mobility exercises, such as pelvic tilts, pelvic circles and bridges. When paired with correct breathing, these build a better relationship between your abdominals and your pelvic floor muscles. Check out exercises programs, like those at Every Mother, for a more complete guide on how to keep your core strong during and after pregnancy.

7. Eat ginger on a regular basis. Ginger, considered to be a super food because of its numerous health benefits, is especially powerful for pregnant women. It helps boost blood circulation, relieves nausea from morning sickness and can help keep blood-glucose levels in check.
8. Start a journaling ritual. If you don’t already have a journaling routine, start one during your pregnancy. The nine-plus months leading up to the arrival of your baby can be overwhelming, and this ritual can help you acknowledge and process whatever you may be feeling. It’s also a great strategy for better understanding how your diet, daily activities and skin routine affect your health. By documenting your patterns, you can develop a system that works best for you and your body.
9. Maintain your healthy habits as much as possible. The easiest thing to do while pregnant is to maintain the healthy habits you already have. The old adage about eating for two may sound great, but your body does not need double the calories. Guidelines vary, so talk to your health care provider about what they recommend for you during each trimester. If you’re used to a workout schedule, try and keep it, even if you need to adjust the specific exercises. And most importantly, always listen to your body; it’s your most powerful guide!

Start-up Success Story
Sarah Lynch and Anna Hindley

The moment I saw that positive pregnancy test for the first time the part of me that wasn’t terrified went into instant Mama Bear mode. I wanted to make sure I ate all the right things, took the right supplements but what I didn’t realize was that what I was putting ON my body was just as important as what I was putting IN my body and my personal care products needed a little bit of a change up.
I used The Environmental Working Group’s (ewg..org) searchable database to check how the ingredients in the products I was using measured up against their safety guidelines and I was surprised at what I found. It took a little of combing through the shelves at Target and some trial and error to find things that were both clean AND effective but once I found these five staples, I have never gone back to my old stuff.

Mineral Salt Crystal Deodorant
Crystal Deodorant- Your Pits Will Thank You
$6.37
In my 20's I had a swollen lymph node under my arm for two years. It was so big that you could see it when I wore tank tops and it made my armpit look weird. I went to numerous doctors until one suggested I stop using deodorant. Unwilling to just wear NOTHING, I scoured the healthfood store shelves and this Crystal's claim of being amazing intrigued me. It is literally just mineral salts and you wet it and rub it on your pits and go about your business smelling fresher than a daisy without any nasty chemicals. Five years later, that lymph node is no longer swollen and I will never use conventional deodorant again (and I don't smell, you can ask my hubs).
The third trimester definitely prepares you for life with a newborn (hello 3am insomnia) and I was super thankful to have Beautycounter's Skin Twin Creamy Concealer to slather under my eyes to make me feel a bit more human. It comes in 13 shades and contains responsibly sourced ingredients that not only conceal dark circles and blemishes but work to improve overall skintone- without the use of questionable ingredients or animal testing.
Most over the counter acne treatments contain salicylic acid, which some providers advise against use during pregnancy. Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment features colloidal sulfur, tea tree oil and chamomile that absorbs quickly and penetrates pores to help control blemishes and keep skin clear. It does not include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide, common acne-fighting ingredients that can over dry or irritate the skin and are not recommended during pregnancy. Every Belli product is allergy tested, free of paraben preservatives, gluten, phthalates, and artificial dyes or fragrances and is approved by OBGYN's & dermatologists. I was one of the (un)lucky ones who's pregnancy glow faded into pregnancy pimples and Belli was my go-to!
There is some evidence that whether or not you get stretch marks is hereditary but that did not stop me from slathering my belly with this oil on the daily. Did I get stretch marks, no. Do I know for sure it was because I used this oil, also no. But, it was nice to take some time every night to rub my belly and connect with the tiny person growing inside. It doesn't contain any sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, or petroleum and is cruelty free!
I have never been one to like the feeling of foundation on my face but Dew Skin is makeup with the feeling of a moisturizer plus- it has SPF. On my most exhausted of days, I can take five seconds to rub some Dew Skin on my face and BOOM- I am out the door. It features a blend of black currant seed oil, peony root extract, and vitamin C to help brighten while leaving skin looking radiant and non-nano zinc oxide, a mineral sunscreen that is coral safe. Like all of Beautycounter's products, it's free from over 1800 harmful chemicals, never tested on animals and ethically and sustainably sourced.
Do you have a sunscreen that you know and trust? Now that summer is in full swing, parents need to find a safe and effective sunscreen for their family, The Environmental Working Group just added 119 more SPF products to their Guide to Sunscreens.
It’s important to read product instructions. When sunscreen is applied incorrectly, it provides far less protection from harmful ultraviolet rays and leaves skin exposed to sun damage.
Here are 10 of the most common mistakes people make when applying sunscreen:
Not reading the ingredient label
EWG recommends a mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because these active ingredients have fewer health concerns, and these products generally offer good sun protection. Zinc oxide especially provides good broad spectrum protection, protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and stability in the sun.
Not applying enough sunscreen
To protect your body fully, you should use about an ounce of lotion – enough to fill a shot glass. Product testers apply a thick coat of sunscreen to their skin to determine its SPF – the equivalent of a family of four using up a four-ounce bottle in just two hours. Make sure to slather it on!
Forgetting to reapply sunscreen every two hours
Sunscreens lose effectiveness over time and having a high SPF in the product you use is no excuse to prolong your time in the sun. Such products can give people a false sense of security so they think they are completely protected from sunburn and long-term skin damage, and can stay out in the sun longer without reapplying. EWG recommends that consumers avoid products labeled with anything higher than SPF 50+.
Applying sunscreen outdoors
Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you venture outside. If you’re already exposed to the sun while applying sunscreen, harmful rays are already hitting your skin. On some days, even five minutes outside in the bright sunlight without sunscreen can damage skin.
Wearing sunscreen only at the beach or pool
You’re exposed to harmful UV radiation year-round. Up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate through thick clouds. It’s not unheard of to get a sunburn on an overcast day. In winter months, the sun’s skin-damaging ultraviolet rays reflect off snow and ice, increasing your exposure. This is especially true on ski vacations, with greater UV exposure the higher the altitude. Remember, UV rays can pass through some glass panes while you drive or work by a window. Check out more sunscreen myths here.
Using an old, separated or expired sunscreen
As sunscreens age, or repeatedly heat and cool the formulation can separate or clump in its container. When this happens, the sunscreen won’t coat your skin in the thick or even way that’s necessary for proper skin protection. Shake sunscreens before applying and store them at an even temperature whenever possible. Toss any product if it clumps or if the oil separates from the lotion. Sunscreens are generally formulated to last about three years. However, it’s important to check expiration dates and examine the product’s texture before use. Discard products after their expiration date because they may no longer provide proper protection.
Neglecting to wear sunscreen because of your darker skin tone
No one is immune from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Although dark skin tones naturally produce more melanin to protect skin, it’s not enough to prevent skin cancer, wrinkling and photo-aging.
Using a product that combines sunscreen and bug repellent
Avoid products that combine insect repellent with sunscreen. Bugs are typically not a problem during the hours when UV radiation peaks. And, more importantly, if you reapply sunscreen every two hours, as advised, you will be overexposed to the active ingredients in the repellent.
Overlooking SPF products formulated for babies
Many baby products are formulated without fragrance and other sensitizing or allergenic ingredients. These products also work well to help protect adults with sensitive skin. This year, EWG found 16 best-scoring sunscreen products for kids.
Relying on sunscreen alone
Although sunscreen can help protect your skin from sun damage, it should never be your only line of defense. Proper sun protection includes wearing protective clothing, like a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection. Find or make shade as much as possible, and stay indoors during peak midday sun.
