If the idea of swimsuit season makes you tense up, stick with us. We know it’s not always easy to fully embrace our bodies, but times are a-changin’! Social media, fashion websites, even store mannequins have gotten with the program and are showcasing a wide range of body types. Now more than ever,  it’s much easier to find models and influencers that represent our own bodies. And although there’s definitely a lot of work still to be done as far as size inclusivity goes across the board, there’s progress in the air. The body positivity movement isn’t going anywhere, so the perfect mom swimsuit is out there. We promise.

Let’s remember, no matter how you feel about your body, every body is a beach body. Our kids just want us to put on the bathing suit and spend the season creating memories with them. Not only do they not care about your oh-so-human “imperfections”, they likely don’t even see them. We can guarantee that no one sees what you consider to be flaws the same way that you do. At the end of the day, we want to set an example for our children. Showing them that their own bodies are perfect just as they are starts with us learning to love our own. We aren’t saying it’s that simple; but we are saying that the first step in getting comfortable at the beach or pool is just doing it. Putting on the swimsuit and getting out there. And we’re here to help.

These mom swimsuits from Amazon are totally mom-friendly. They’re flattering, confidence-boosting, and downright cute. We’ve made sure that they’re also supportive, offer various levels of coverage, and include a wide range of sizes. These are some seriously adorable and wearable suits that we’re confident you’ll feel great in. Get ready to flaunt that hot (yes, hot!) bod this spring and summer in one of these mom swimsuits, all snaggable from Amazon!

This little number is like a bikini without the commitment. It also comes in a ton of colors so you may want to pick up more than one!

Amazon Review: I have an athletic build (with a few extra winter pounds in this pic ;) but love the suit for the most part. I wish it was a little less cheeky / narrow cut in the back and the off shoulder side was a little higher for a little more chest coverage. Overall very happy with it. Quality fabric and stays in place. I returned L because it was too small and the XL fits well. I usually I'm somewhere between a medium and large both for top and bottom. —SavvyStagerAndHomeMaker

For those lucky enough to be born in March, count yourself among a select group of creative dreamers who are empathetic and optimistic. According to studies (and a smidge of astrology, if you believe in that kind of thing), here are eight cool traits and factoids that make March birthdays special.

Looking for other months? Check out interesting facts about people born in April, people with February birthdays, and facts about people born in May.

You might end up with a night owl

According to this sleep study published by the National Library of Medicine, sleep habits are affected by when you’re born. The findings suggest that kids born in spring and summer tend to stay up later than those born during the winter months due to the increased photoperiod directly after birth, which leads to phase delay (your body telling you it’s nighttime and therefore bedtime) of the human circadian system.

March is a month of dreamers and heroes

Those born under the sign of Pisces are also charismatic, affectionate, and generous. If you’ve got a Pisces baby, support their boundless imagination with plenty of pretend play, creative outlets, and games. Because those born under this half of March’s zodiac sign are empathetic, they’ll go above and beyond for their loved ones.

The birthstone for March represents youth, good health, and hope

The aquamarine gem is a luxurious blue, and while it isn’t considered a precious stone, is often associated with not only good health and hope but a feeling of calm, trust, and fearlessness. According to Truly Experiences, sailors used to carry aquamarine with them on sea voyages for protection, as the semi-precious gem was thought to be the treasure of the mermaids.

March babies have pretty good eyesight

While winter-born babies have the best vision overall, babies born in spring have been shown to have better eyesight than their summer friends, according to a study of 300,000 military applicants. A co-author of the study explains that babies born in the summer months have a 25% chance of becoming nearsighted. The reason? The study suggests that the cause might be long-term exposure to natural light in early life.

Solitude is a must for some of those with March birthdays

Pisces babies (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) love people, but they love solitude just as much. Known as super creative and imaginative, March babies enjoy getting lost in their thoughts and are content to spend time alone.

March babies are romantic and soulful

Guided more by intuition than by structure, those born under the sign of Pisces are ideal partners and friends. They tend to be compassionate and have an open heart that forgives and forgets easily. They can tap into the feelings of their loved ones and be empathetic, which is a plus in moments of conflict.

There are plenty of celebrities with March birthdays

Famous people like a little extra luck too! People born in March share their birthday month with lots of famous people, including Justin Bieber, Shaquille O’Neal, Chuck Norris, Queen Latifah, Reese Witherspoon, Bruce Willis, Elton John, Sarah Jessica Park, and more.

As flowers are starting to poke out of the newly thawed ground, so do a bunch of spring festivals. On this year’s list, we’ve got a baker’s dozen of favorite festivals, some of which have not been in-person since before the pandemic. From tulips to cherry blossoms and sheep to shenanigans, there is something on our list that will appeal to not only the little guys but moms and dads too. Most of these events are free to boot!

Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival

Seattle Center

The Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival is Seattle Center's oldest in the Festál series. The festival was inspired by a gift of 1,000 cherry trees sent to the city from Japan's former Prime Minister, Takeo Miki, commemorating America's bicentennial and the lifelong friendship between Japan and Washington State. Since then, the festival has been dedicated to increasing the understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. It features ikebana, martial arts demonstrations, tea ceremonies, kimono dress-up, children's activities, koto music, taiko drumming, and more.

Welcome the warmer weather and sunshine with a visit to the Washington State Events Center for the annual Washington State Spring Fair. Take in favorite fair attractions, including baby animal exhibits, carnival rides, music, entertainment, and, of course, amazing eats...can you say hot Fisher scones?

Baby Animals & Blooms Days

spring festivals seattle, baby animals and blooms
Allison Sutcliffe

Baby animals and blooming tulip fields are the headliners of this festival. But we're sure if you asked your kids, they'd say the farm amenities are what make this event worth the drive for Seattle families. They've got enough to keep your kids playing all day long (no joke) and it all starts with the Kids Courtyard Play Area. If you've got toddlers in tow, this is a great spot to be. But if big kids are in your crew, start in the back field where you'll find the wagon ride, cow train ride, "mega" slide, jump pillow, low ropes course, ziplines, wall mazes, human foosball, trike track, tube slides and a variety of unique and fun-sounding activities like Barnyard Ball Zone, Conk the Crow, Roller Bowler, and Gaga Ball. They'll be tired after a day on this gorgeous farm. When you need to refuel, stop by one of the many food booths to grab a bite.

Good to know:

  • Tickets are available ONLY online.

Whether you’re looking to join a CSA, find a new favorite restaurant or buy science-inspired, kid-designed clothes for your crew, these local businesses are here to help

Seattle is one of those cities where people buy local whenever they can. And February is a great time to recommit to supporting local and small when you shop at some of the best Black-owned businesses in Seattle. From restaurants, CSAs and grocery delivery to fitness studios and beauty products, these enterprising companies have kids and families in mind.

These Black-Owned Businesses in Seattle Are Fun for Families

Consider it your go-to spot for creative balloon installations that’ll really make your kiddo’s birthday party (or that baby shower you’re throwing next month) pop. Families can order balloon bundles and garlands, plus just about every individual balloon you can think of online. Or you can stop by the shop to talk inspired ideas with owner Kariba Jack. Orders should be placed two weeks in advance; delivery options are still in the works.

Orion Razat
A different spin on Black-owned businesses in Seattle, we're all about celebrating and supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of Seattle's own Orion Razat, author of 101 STEM Jokes. Published when he was barely out of grade school, it’s a book of silly puns and one-liners Orion wrote to entertain his classmates (much to the chagrin of his teacher). With the help of his parents, he was able to bring them all together in this entertaining book. You can follow Orion on Instagram @rocketshipsquid to see what he's up to next (hint: he's working on a second book) and buy his science-inspired merch too.

Local Yokels
When local farmer’s markets shut down due to the pandemic, ag-heads Amber and Damon had a brilliant idea, and another Black-owned business in Seattle was born. They would bridge the gap by working with local farms to deliver fresh produce and other products directly to doorsteps in Seattle. Voila! Local Yokels was born. With a focus on sustainability, be it environmental or economic, families can feel good about using this service to get groceries, meats, gift baskets, self-care products, and more delivered. Our suggestion? Their subscription boxes make it easy to always have the staples on hand so you can skip the store on those unavoidably busy days.

In addition to the weekly market, full and half produce shares, they also have a youth program that addresses food justice issues that affect BIPOC kids. As part of the Clean Greens Youth Program, kids ages 4-12 can learn about healthy living and sustainable farming with hands-on experiences.

Nights by the fire, s’mores, and loads of family memories are in store at these cozy cabins near Chicago

The cold-weather months have officially arrived and most of Chicago is staying close to home. For a change of scenery or maybe a quick getaway without the kids, escape to a sweet cabin in the woods. We found cabins, cottages, and even a converted grain bin close to Chicago to unplug and schedule time amongst the trees and alongside lakes. Make a plan for now, or plan ahead for spring to relax, unwind and say hey to Mother Nature.

Big Cedar Lodge

Big Cedar Lodge

This spot is a bit of a hike from Chicago, but it is so great we felt it was worth a share. Plus, a road trip might be just what you need to break up the routine. New-ish to the glamping scene, Camp Long Creek at Big Cedar Lodge invites guests to get their glamp on near Missouri's Ozark Mountains with luxury glamping tents, camp huts, and camp cabins. The definitely-not-roughing-it amenities include beach access and a pool during the summer months, a vintage airstream trailer that serves food & drinks, and a must-have s'mores kit upon arrival. They also have programming for families that include scavenger hunts and guided adventures along the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.

Barn of Three Oaks

Nicole Bates Photography

This may not be a cabin, but a barn is just as fun! Barn of Three Oaks is situated between Three Oaks and New Buffalo, MI, and close to Lake Michigan, restaurants, distilleries, wineries and breweries, and boutique shopping. Oh, and stunning sunsets. Come ready for family movie nights in front of the TV that's ready to stream and game nights at the shuffleboard table. A wood-burning fireplace keeps things warm and cozy.

Farmhouse Cottage in Sawyer

Airbnb

Sawyer, MI is located just over an hour from Chicago, a little past New Buffalo. They've recently seen an uptick in new shops and restaurants, making it a good spot to check out any time of year. This farmhouse cottage in is bikeable to local beaches, wineries, distilleries, and outdoor adventures. It's stylish and modern and looks out over 14 acres of scenic barn, pasture, and woods. It has a great setup if you want to shop for groceries to make dinner at home or there are great local dining options if you don't.

We recommend checking out Peasant's Pantry for breakfast, lunch, and take-home options, Susan's for dinner, and Infusco for a caffeine jolt.

Fuller’s Resort and Campground on Clear Lake

This awesome glampsite in Buchanan, MI, is just over an hour outside of Chicago for those who need to get away from it all, and fast! With various glamping options from an authentic log cabin to major luxe-living in the cottages that include beds, bathrooms with showers, full kitchens, cable TV, and air conditioning, you can pick your family’s level of outdoorsy-ness when you book your trip. Although the log cabin doesn’t have a kitchen or bathroom like in 1835 when it was built, it’s the most popular rental onsite so grab it while you can. They take reservations up to a year in advance.

KOA Wisconsin Dells

https://www.instagram.com/p/CEwaNsUBCaY/

The waterpark capital of the world has 3,200 campsites (really!). Start at the KOA Wisconsin Dells which, because of its friendly, hands-on owners, makes campers feel they are being hosted at a mom-and-pop. Located just a mile or so north of downtown, you are close to the Dells action (mini golf, arcades, and more) but remote enough to bask in the company of tall trees and the winding Wisconsin River.

Onsite there is a heated pool with a splash pad, free Wi-Fi, fun-cycle rentals, a game room and nightly outdoor family movies during the summer months.

Park your camper at a long, level pull-thru with a patio and cable TV hookup; or relax on a beautiful, shaded RV site. Camping cabins and deluxe cabins are equipped with AC/heat. Visitors love the trees, immaculate restrooms with showers, and full-sized propane grills.

Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom

Chicagoans might think of Door County as a summer retreat, but don't discount this area for a winter escape. Not as many shops are open and you won't be lounging at the beach, but the much smaller crowd has its benefits. You can still enjoy many of the shops in the small towns that dot Door County, as well as many taprooms, wineries, and distilleries open for tastings. The lake views and landscape are much different in the winter months, but no less beautiful.

Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom offers three different sleeping options in Egg Harbor, a cabin, a cottage, and a treehouse. When in Egg Harbor, be sure to stop into Big Easy for fresh beignets that will make you feel like you woke up in New Orleans.

The Has Bin

Airbnb

Oh, man. This place is adorable. Just over two hours away in Alvin, IL, is The Has Bin. What used to be a grain bin is now an adorable bed & breakfast with a prepared breakfast included in your stay. It's great for train lovers because there's a train that runs directly behind the bin with great views from the upper back deck. The bedroom is located in a loft with access to a beautiful deck. Bring s'mores supplies to enjoy the firepit and scenic farm.

Sleeps: 4
Cost: $125/night

Starved Rock

Starved Rock is about as rocky as Illinois gets and is characterized by sandstone rock formations, 18 canyons, waterfalls, and views of the Illinois River. You'll love walking in the quiet forest, home to deer, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. Plus, tons of beautiful wildflowers bloom all around you during warmer months. One benefit of a cold-weather visit is a chance to see the thousands of Eagles that migrate yearly from Canada.

The Civilian Conservator Corps built the log cabins you'll find at Starved Rock in 1930. The knotty pine paneling and charm will take you back to simpler times, nestled under towering pines and century-old oaks.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCBRujOCQsn/

With play equipment and character meet-and-greets—all against the backdrop of unspoiled Northern Illinois—a trip to Jellystone is more like a theme-park vacay that incidentally includes camping.

Mini golf, hayrides, arts and crafts, outdoor movies, a playground, numerous pools (including one just for kiddies), a game room, bonfires, and appearances by the furry bear character clan shouldn’t be missed.

Tent sites are available with or without electricity and less rustic cabins are available for rental. This site is open seasonally, from mid-April to mid-October, so keep it on your list for planning spring vacations.

Kinnikinnick Farm

https://www.instagram.com/p/CEiKSLBhFdz/

Kick it Little House on the Prairie-style at Kinnikinnick Farm where you can glamp on a real working farm. Only an hour-and-a-half northwest of Chicago, the farm-stay program will have your kids picking eggs, feeding pigs, and milking goats. The accommodations are a cross between a log cabin and a classic tent with running water and an insulated chest that functions as a refrigerator. You’ll have to fend without electricity during your visit but with so many fun farm-centric activities, we’re guessing your kids won’t even notice.

This spot is available mid-May to mid-October and it's recommended you book early, as spots fill quickly.

Turkey Run Inn

Three hours away in Bloomingdale, IN, you'll find Turkey Run State Park. Trails wind through ravines, sandstone gorges, and exposed bedrock, accessed by an unbelievable suspension bridge. This is truly one of the Midwest's natural wonders, best seen on horseback or canoe. Flowing through the heart of the park, scenic Sugar Creek is great for beginning paddlers.

Fill your days with hiking, horseback riding and canoeing, fishing, and a swimming pool when the weather allows. You'll find campsites with electrical hookups and modern restrooms with showers. Cabins and cabin rooms are available through the Turkey Run Inn.

The next time your family needs a digital detox, take an unplugged vacation that isn’t too far from Seattle

We all live a noisy life with plenty of distractions all wanting our attention. Sometimes it’s best to take a breather away from cell phones, computers, TVs, and video games and get back to nature while reconnecting with our families. Go back and enjoy the simple pleasures like playing card games, reading a book, napping for no good reason, and stargazing. Sure, the kids might pout at first, but they’ll find things to do in no time and will treasure these memories for years to come. But don’t take our word for it, plan an unplugged getaway in Washington this fall.

Ah, but the inside is pretty great. There are one-bed cabins (one queen bed) and two-bed cabins (queen-sized bunk beds) with comfy pillows and clean sheets. (No sleeping bags needed!) Inside, the space comes with both heat and air conditioning, a kitchenette (with two-burner stove and mini fridge), a kitchen table and chairs, a hot shower and private toilet, a few good books, an old-time radio, and cell phone lockbox. Outside, you’ll find a fire pit with grill grate, two Adirondack chairs, and a picnic table. The accommodations are well planned, but keep in mind that these are cozy cabins. Fido can come too, but there is an extra charge.

There are two locations in Washington, but we can't tell you exactly where. You see, Getaway won’t reveal the actual location of your Outpost until the cabin is booked, but each is guaranteed to be a two-hour drive (or less) from its respective city. Here's what we do know. The Seattle Outpost is in Skagit Valley, and the Portland Outpost is located somewhere in Glenwood, Washington (about four hours from Seattle). Both locations are near a number of walking and hiking trails and are not too far away from activities that'll keep your crew busy and happy.

Who hasn’t dreamed of living in a treehouse? Located in White Salmon, Washington, the Klickitat Treehouse isn’t some rickety old fort. It’s a beautiful, 500-square-foot, two-bedroom home. You kids may not appreciate that it was built with a Scandinavian architecture design, but they’ll think that it’s cool nonetheless.

The living room features floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of Mount Adams, wood-burning stove, leather couch, and floor cushions. Plus who needs WiFi when you've got books and games here? Parents will appreciate the private bedroom with a queen bed and double pocket doors that open up to the living room. Kids will go crazy over the loft area with two queen beds and skylights. The house also features a full kitchen and full bathroom, but there is also a private outdoor shower too for use in the spring and summer months. It has both heating and air conditioning so you can rent it any time of year.

The wraparound deck features a propane grill, patio table, and Adirondack chairs. Down below you’ll find a fire pit and an old logging road trail that winds around the property. The treehouse is located about 20 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Hood River and the outdoor activities (biking, skiing, fishing etc.) at the Columbia River Gorge.

Built in 1926, this waterfront property features 91 guestrooms with everything you’d expect to find there – except TVs. Enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant, Roosevelt Room before heading out to do some fishing or paddleboarding on the lake. (Note: wifi is available here, but don’t tell you kids!)

Honor a Deceptive Milestone

Deception Pass State Park is our state’s most-visited state park. This year marks the parks 100th anniversary giving you a good excuse to camp and celebrate. (Don’t have a tent? No problem. Washington State Parks has partnered with Arrive Outdoors where you can rent the gear that you need and have it delivered to your home before you go.)

The park is spread out over 3,854 acres with 172 tent sites and 134 partial hookup sites. Here you can you beachcomb along the Puget Sound beachfront and then walk only a short distance away to Cranberry Lake. Check out the Sand Dune Interpretive Trail (just 1.2 miles long) that covers a forested area, a marsh overlook and a native dune environment. If you have a little more gumption, walk up the trail to the Deception Pass Bridge or you can take your car around – we don’t judge.

The park is a great place to go geocaching during the day and s’more-making around the fire at night (not to mention ghost-story-telling!) From seagulls to squirrels (and the occasional whale or seal), chances of seeing some real wildlife is a distinct possibility. The town of Oak Harbor is just minutes away as is the Blue Fox Drive-In which is open all year round.

Wake Up to the Ocean

Located on Copalis Beach, Washington, Iron Springs Resort is close enough to Ocean Shores for a “quick drive into town” while also being far enough out to feel away from it all. Built in the 1940s (but clearly renovated since then), the resort is mishmash of both modern and rustic. There are 25 different-sized cabins on the premises that with lodging ranging from four to 10 people, and pets are allowed in most of them. Each unit is equipped with multiple bedrooms, full kitchen (with dishwasher), living room with fireplace or wood stove, and bathroom. Most have decks with barbecues and outdoor spigots and hoses to watch off Fido. And while they also have flat screen TVs with DVD players, making a 100 percent “unplugged” vacation a challenge, there’s no harm in watching a movie with popcorn before bedtime, is there?

During the day, the ocean is the star of the show which is just a short walk from your cabin. There are a number of hiking trails too. There is a general store that is stocked with just about anything you forgot back home. The beach is a good place to go fishing or clamming, and this resort offers a clam cleaning station and fire pit, as well as fishing licenses, if you need them.

Stay at a Non-Camper's Paradise

If you thought that KOA (Kampgrounds of America) was only for those with trailers and motorhomes, think again. Many locations also feature cabins to rent too. At the Pine Village KOA in Leavenworth, Washington, the campground offers a range of cabins to fit your comfort level, from the no-frills camping cabin (beds and mattresses only) to the deluxe cabins that sleep up to eight people, feature two bedrooms, full kitchens and bathrooms, decks with barbecues, and picnic tables. Where else can you camp that has a microwave and Keurig coffee maker? How about a ceiling fan and air conditioning?

As for the campground itself, it’s beautiful sitting above the river and surrounded by Evergreen trees. It features a swimming pool, hot tub, playground, snack bar, and planned activities throughout the year. Start the morning off right with crepes at the Cascade Café (open only during the summer months) before riding bikes around the campground. Take a short hike down to the river, or enjoy a day at the pool, only taking breaks to visit the Coffee Cabin for espresso, sandwiches, ice cream, or milkshakes. Make sure to leave time to visit the Bavarian town of Leavenworth which is always celebrating something including Maifest, Oktoberfest, and its Village of Lights.

Tips for a Great Trip with Kids:

1. Long drives can be less of a burden for everyone if you find something fun to do along the way. For younger ones, pack along some healthy snacks (carrot sticks, apple slices, fishy crackers, and juice boxes) handed out at different intervals. For older kids, pack a splurge treat as a surprise. Also, pack along a new coloring book or travel game. Of course, there is always the old tried and true ABC game or one of our other car game favorites.

2. If you are staying at a place that offers an outdoor fire pit, don’t forget makings for s’mores, but you can plan for dinner there too. Making hobo dinners is a fun family meal that everyone can make themselves. Create foil packets that contain a hamburger patty, chopped carrots, potatoes, and onions. Toss in some salt and pepper, fold up the edges nice and tight, and cook over hot coals.

3. Plan ahead for when the weather turns sour or boredom rears its ugly head. Pack along a jigsaw puzzle, craft supplies (like paints for the rocks found at the beach), or a brand-new card game no one in the family has played before.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

Dean Koepfler

Head south to find an array of animal experiences, including a year-round petting zoo, when you visit Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma. Just beyond the outdoor playground is where you’ll find the friendly goats, who are all about being fed by hand. Bring quarters so you can get a fistful of pellets. Then it’s up to your wannabe farmers to entice the goats to take a bite (don’t worry, they’re eager eaters who aren’t hard to please). If you’re lucky, you’ll time your visit with one of the zookeeper’s daily Close Encounter chats so your kids can learn more about their new furry best friend. Once the goats have had their fill, or you’ve run out of quarters, head to the Pacific Seas Aquarium where kids can dip their hands into the icy cold water of the Tidal Touch Zone and make contact with seastars, urchins, anemones and cucumbers.

Good to know: Point Defiance also offers amazing up-close animal encounters for kids, including Groovy Goats, Heroes of Unusual Size and Jammin’ with Jellies.

Insider tip: Put May 7 on your spring calendar, because that’s when the zoo’s budgie feeding experience reopens. Trust us, there’s nothing cuter than giggling toddlers feeding these friendly birds.

Kelsey Creek Farm

Bellevue’s favorite urban farm is a family hot spot on a warm spring day. And although parents think the picnic-able fields and wide stroller-friendly paths are the big draw, the kids know it’s all about the animals. Easy-to-follow signs keep the kids learning as they make the rounds on the farm’s self-guided tour around the barns and pens. This is where they can check out chickens, stare down pigs and baa with the best of them. The park is free to wander, and you can find the animals in their pastures from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., year-round, rain or shine. Our favorite part? When your little animal lover needs a change of scenery, head to the playground for some sliding, swinging and jumping before hitting the road.

Insider tip: Be sure to check out Kelsey Creek’s programs if your farm hands want to spend more time with the animals. The farm's super popular Sheep Shearing is just around the corner, and kids can be Busy Beavers this weekend.

Tiny Hearts Homestead

This rustic rehome sanctuary opened in November of 2019, and it’s been charming visitors ever since. Bring your wild ones for a chance to visit a working farm where the animals you’ll meet are some of the friendliest around. Kids will enjoy following the goats, pigs, donkeys and mini horses around in the field. And if they’re feeling brave, they can see if the alpacas and chickens are hungry. Psst…they may even eat out of your hand. When you visit, please wear clothing you won’t mind getting dirty, especially in springtime when things can get muddy. And you can feel good knowing that your experience cost goes right back to the animals, as farm visits help Brooke keep the animals healthy and cared for.

Insider tip: Take home a dozen farm fresh eggs after you visit. Just remember to ask Brooke ahead of time so she can set some aside for you (if the chickens are laying).

Good to know: Got a little animal lover? Consider hosting a summer birthday party on the farm ($150/hr.). Kids will get as much animal time as they can handle, and you’ve got all the picnic table space you need to set out cake, decorations and presents for a simple and sweet celebration.

The Fancy Farm

If you ask us the motto at this farm should be come for the pony rides, stay to visit the animals. Farm visits at Fancy Farm are relatively new (it opened in 2020) and everything you'd expect when visiting a working farm that's also a non-profit rescue. It all starts at the gate where parents fill out paperwork and the kids get to play with chicks and ducks. Then it's time to head down to the barn where you'll meet the menagerie of goats, pigs, horses, ducks, chickens, quail, emu and of course the farm dogs and barn cats. Families are free to explore on their own, but don't worry the farmers are always within ear shot to answer questions or help with the animals. Grain is available if goat feeding tops your list, and there are helpful cards placed along the fence that teach kids about the farm animals.

Insider tip: Planning a birthday party ($150) at the Fancy Farm is super easy. Kids can ride ponies, interact with the animals and be totally free range on the play space.

Good to know: The Fancy Farm also runs a forest school program that's 100% outdoor and nature-based.

This rescue facility is dedicated to taking in mistreated animals and giving them a stellar experience as long as they hang around—and that’s saying a lot since some of their rescues can live over 150 years. Plan to visit with 17-year old Basker, the albino alligator; Pete and Re-Pete, the two-headed turtle; and a host of other reptilian faves like snakes, iguanas and tortoises. If you visit during open hours, you’ll get to see all the scaly creatures and pet the tortoise too. Indoor Petting Zoos & Other Places to Find Crazy Cool Animals

Vashon Llamas

For a smaller farm experience, ferry over to Vashon and meet the friendly llamas at this family-owned farm. The herd and has been together for nearly 20 years, and the six remaining animals are used to being around kids and families. Owner Kelly loves teaching people about llamas almost as much as she loves introducing people to them. She takes the time to explain llama habits and important safety procedures before leading families into the field where they can pet and feed the small herd. After the animal interaction, it's time to see how llama wool is spun. The whole experience takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. We're big fans of the farm's Parent/Child camp ($50/pair) where a parent and child get llama time for about an hour, and then learn to weave for the next hour. Top it off with farm chores before you head home.

Insider tip: Make your reservation with Kelly a 3-4 days before your trip to make sure you get the spot you want. And if you're able, visit on the weekday when it's not quite as busy.
