For those lucky enough to be born in March, count yourself among a select group of creative dreamers who are empathetic and optimistic. According to studies (and a smidge of astrology, if you believe in that kind of thing), here are eight cool traits and factoids that make March birthdays special.

Looking for other months? Check out interesting facts about people born in April, people with February birthdays, and facts about people born in May.

You might end up with a night owl

According to this sleep study published by the National Library of Medicine, sleep habits are affected by when you’re born. The findings suggest that kids born in spring and summer tend to stay up later than those born during the winter months due to the increased photoperiod directly after birth, which leads to phase delay (your body telling you it’s nighttime and therefore bedtime) of the human circadian system.

March is a month of dreamers and heroes

Those born under the sign of Pisces are also charismatic, affectionate, and generous. If you’ve got a Pisces baby, support their boundless imagination with plenty of pretend play, creative outlets, and games. Because those born under this half of March’s zodiac sign are empathetic, they’ll go above and beyond for their loved ones.

The birthstone for March represents youth, good health, and hope

The aquamarine gem is a luxurious blue, and while it isn’t considered a precious stone, is often associated with not only good health and hope but a feeling of calm, trust, and fearlessness. According to Truly Experiences, sailors used to carry aquamarine with them on sea voyages for protection, as the semi-precious gem was thought to be the treasure of the mermaids.

March babies have pretty good eyesight

While winter-born babies have the best vision overall, babies born in spring have been shown to have better eyesight than their summer friends, according to a study of 300,000 military applicants. A co-author of the study explains that babies born in the summer months have a 25% chance of becoming nearsighted. The reason? The study suggests that the cause might be long-term exposure to natural light in early life.

Solitude is a must for some of those with March birthdays

Pisces babies (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) love people, but they love solitude just as much. Known as super creative and imaginative, March babies enjoy getting lost in their thoughts and are content to spend time alone.

March babies are romantic and soulful

Guided more by intuition than by structure, those born under the sign of Pisces are ideal partners and friends. They tend to be compassionate and have an open heart that forgives and forgets easily. They can tap into the feelings of their loved ones and be empathetic, which is a plus in moments of conflict.

There are plenty of celebrities with March birthdays

Famous people like a little extra luck too! People born in March share their birthday month with lots of famous people, including Justin Bieber, Shaquille O’Neal, Chuck Norris, Queen Latifah, Reese Witherspoon, Bruce Willis, Elton John, Sarah Jessica Park, and more.

Discover moss-covered trails, storied forests, and jaw-dropping lake views with our favorite hikes around Portland

Portland, Oregon is a beautiful city with plenty of outdoor opportunities for families with kids—and getting kids into nature can be as easy as a ten-minute drive, especially in a city like Portland, with parks and natural areas at every turn. And there’s no better way to take in nature than with a long, easy hike on the trails that run through and nearby Portland. We’ve rounded up the best hikes for families with kiddos of all ages an abilities. Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, and have fun exploring the great outdoors with your family.

The 8 Best Hikes in Portland with Kids

1. Reed Lake

This spot is a true hidden gem and an easy, close-in option that the whole family can enjoy. This 1-mile loop behind the Reed College campus, through Reed Canyon and around Reed Lake, is a jaw-dropping find that will have you feeling like you are wandering through a private oasis. The unpaved trail is open to the public, and even when school is in session, it’s a lesser-known hike that usually remains uncrowded. Spot the ducks in the lake, tramp across the footbridge, and admire the the spring blooms and baby animals floating and scampering about.

Good to Know: Parking at Reed is free, and the closest to the trail head is the East lot off of Woodstock. Or, take the bus and extend the adventure!

2. Wapato Greenway Loop on Sauvie Island

One of Portland’s favorite playgrounds is Sauvie Island, full of berry picking and beach-going in the summer and pumpkin patches in the fall. You’ll also find a great hike at Wapato Greenway, which features a wetland lake, meadows, grassland, and oak trees. Kids will love hunting for snakes (harmless garter varieties), frogs, ducks, and more on the trails. The loop around the pond is 2.2 miles total.

3. Powell Butte Nature Park

Hike around a giant extinct volcano at this park in the city limits. Powell Butte is a beautiful place for a hike, with wooded paths, meadows, and perfect views of surrounding peaks on clear days. Starting at the small visitor center kiosk it’s an easy trek to the top on the paved path. There you’ll find a viewing platform pointing out the nine different mountains encircling you, including Mount Jefferson, Adams, St. Helens, and even Rainier. From there, you can follow the hiking trails around the back of the park into the forests or turn around and wind through the grassy meadows instead. The summit is a 0.7 mile hike, and the whole loop is about 2.9 miles. Spring sees wildflowers galore on the hills, and with them comes the buzz of bees and flutter of butterflies.

4. Oak Bottom Wildlife Refuge

It’s not a long trail or hike, but for a quick afternoon out in nature, it’s a perfect escape. Start on the bluffs at the small parking lot, then wander down the bluff—turn right to head around the pond for the 2.3 mile loop. The path is well kept, with bridges, boardwalks, and viewing platforms that extend over the wetlands. In the small loop at Tadpole Pond kids will find plenty of places to look for the little creatures along with salamanders and birds.

Good to Know: The park is near the Springwater Corridor, Sellwood Riverfront Park, and Oaks Bottom Amusement Park if you need to extend your day of fun.

5. Camassia Nature Trail

You want to time this trail right—in April through June it comes alive with wildflowers of all colors like trillium, the namesake Camassia, and more. It’s a short trail and easy to follow—meaning kids can lead the way with confidence through the forests and meadows.

The rocky ridges here were created by an ancient flood that left giant boulders behind—learn all about the unique geology from volunteers on guided hikes and at signposts along the trail. You’ll come across creeks and ponds hiding frogs and newts, oak and aspen trees welcoming woodpeckers and bluebirds, and even a radio tower with an osprey nest! The loop is a pleasant 1.5 miles with much of it on a boardwalk.

6. Mt. Tabor Park

One of the best urban explorations is on the slopes of a dormant volcano. Start at the trailhead by SE 64th and Lincoln, near the reservoirs, then wander at will through the paths and roads. Dirt trails, paved paths, stairs and more wind around the cinder cone volcano, until you arrive at the very top, with fabulous views of downtown Portland. A playground is on the north side-access it from Salmon St or Yamhill, or make your way there by foot.

7. Hoyt Arboretum Trails

Try to count how many different trees you can find in Hoyt Arboretum, we dare you! With 2300 species and over 12 miles of trails, it’s quite the challenge. Here, you’ll find plenty of easy hikes on the hills near the Oregon Zoo and Children’s Museum. Some of our favorites? The 0.3 mile Magnolia Trail between Wildwood and Oak Trails for a great view of the flowering trees in the spring There’s also cherry blossoms, dogwood flowers, and Japanese snow-bells. Don’t forget to look down for early trilliums! Start your visit in the parking lot (it’s a pay lot, avoid the hunt and cost by taking the Max or even biking), then head to the trails.

While family travel may not be as spontaneous as it used to be (was it ever?), there’s no reason you can’t pack the kids and a cooler full of bevvies in the car and head out on a low-key road trip over the long weekend. If you’re itching to spend time away from home, we’ve got nine Memorial Day road trips that will help you and the kids kick summer into high gear. Mountain resorts, seaside stays and a few lesser-known destinations thrown into the mix for good measure, mean you’ve got options. But what do all these spots have in common? They’re not too far from the city, so you can spend your time recreating instead of playing referee between kids in the car. Here’s where to spend your Memorial Day weekend.

A Hood Canal Getaway

A child enjoys the views of Hood Canal on a Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

If you’re looking for a road trip with options (like ferries vs. bridges and resorts vs. cabins), Hood Canal is the place to go. Located between the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas, this fab family destination will take you less than two hours to get to… if you don’t encounter road and ferry traffic. Here's your first choice for this Memorial Day road trip destination—do you wan to ferry into Kingston, Bremerton or Port Orchard to get here? Either way, you’ll be trading high-rise buildings and busy freeways for sea-creature filled tide flats and beautiful beaches. Your kiddos will think they’re in a whole new world. Everything is an adventure here, including where you eat. It doesn't get any better than oysters from the Hamma Hamma Oyster Saloon or Hook & Fork, part of the charming Union City Market. Beyond beachside eats, plan to spend the weekend hiking, fishing, exploring tidepools and, depending on the weather, enjoying water sports.

Stay at: If relaxing is what you're after, there's no better place to stay than the totally kid-friendly Alderbrook Resort & Spa. The resort recently unveiled their updated spa and has plans to open the just-renovated Restaurant at Alderbrook on May 20 (keep your fingers crossed), in time for Memorial Day. While it's an easy starting point for all your Hood Canal adventures, it's just as easy to stay on-site with the kids and take advantage of the indoor, heated, saltwater pool; abundance of lawn games; hiking trails and waterfront activities like kayaking and SUPing. But since options are they key to this weekend getaway, families can also pitch a tent at one of the nearby state parks or book a cabin so you don't have to rough-it too much.

A Getaway with Bavarian-Themed Charm

via instagram

Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Leavenworth is a small Bavarian-styled town that doesn’t skimp on its theming. Most of the architecture here is meant to look as if the buildings were plucked from Bavaria and then placed in Eastern Washington. Known for their many year-round festivals, outdoor dining options and colorful shopkeepers (many are dressed in traditional "Bavarian wear”), strolling the main drag never seems to get old, no matter how many times you've visited. Traditional food can also be found around every corner...not to mention the many ice cream and candy shops that line the streets. If all this isn’t enough to impress, Leavenworth also boasts a handful of parks, hiking trails, swimming pool, miniature golf course, arcade, a fantastic pump track and a year-round reindeer farm that's always a hit with kids. If that isn't enough for your spring getaway, you'll find plenty of fishing, biking, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, birding and zip lining here too.

Stay atSleeping Lady Mountain Resort with an on-site Aspen Leaf Day Spa, organic farm-to-table restaurant, cozy accommodations and spectacular rock pool. You also can’t beat the Enzian Inn which has fantastic indoor facilities–pool, hot tub, basketball court, ping pong room–that are great for burning off that pre-bedtime energy (please note: the outdoor pool is under construction and unavailable at this time). And at the expansive Icicle Village Resort, at the town’s western entry off Highway 2, you can choose from standard hotel rooms or three-bedroom condos, many of which have stunning views.

Good to know: The Baren Haus serves up some of the best burgers in town with homemade hamburger buns and Gustav’s is a family style pub that's been a Leavenworth favorite since 1982. Also, the Wood Shop and Hat Shop is a must-see along with the always popular Nutcracker Museum.

An Easy Island Vacation

Fay Bainbridge beach on Bainbridge Island is an easy Memorial Day road trips destination from Seattle
Allison Sutcliffe

Because a ferry ride is probably the easiest way to travel with kids (hello, upper deck exploration), Bainbridge Island is always a winning Memorial Day weekend destination. No matter where you stay, you're always close to hustle and bustle of Winslow's many shops and restaurants, KiDiMu, the weekend Farmer's Market, Scrappy Art Lab and Owen's Playground. Downtown isn't the only place worth exploring. Bloedel Reserve offers trails a plenty and you never know what you'll find along the way—a zen garden, an old mansion or a reflecting pool. You'll need timed tickets to visit this special spot. Looking for more spontaneity? You'll find it at Fay Bainbridge or Battle Point Park. Don't forget the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center so you can play like it's summer—indoors.

Stay at: When it comes to a place to stay, Bainbridge has a few family-friendly options to consider. Because hotel pools are always a hit with kids, the Quality Inn & Suites is a good spot to start. It’s pet-friendly and just down the road from Strawberry Hill Park and Winslow. If having a small kitchen (sans stove) makes your stay easier, try the Marshall Suites. For an upscale feel, check into the Inn at Pleasant Beach. Situated in the heart of Lynwood, next to beaches and dining, each suite has its own personality, and your stay includes access to the pool, complete with a kiddie wading area.

A Coast Worth Exploring

A family bikes on the Oregon coast during their Memorial Day road trips near Seattle
Sharon Mead

We know Washington is home to amazing coastal destinations, but there's something equally appealing about the beaches along the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach with it's telltale haystack rock is a tried and true choice for Seattle families (and Goonies fans from around the country), it's one of many that are worth the trip. All you need to do is head south on the 101 to find a (hopefully) quieter destination that's just a scenic and sandy. No matter where you land, these beaches are all about bike riding, kite flying, whale watching and of course, sandcastle building. So bring your sand toys, rain coats (you can count on typical PNW weather here) and sunscreen because you'll be kicking back over Memorial Day weekend watching the waves from the shore.

Stay at: Depending on where you land, a cabin with a view is in order, offering easy access to all the shore has to offer. But if a resort is more your speed, Salishan Coastal Lodge, just off the 101 should do the trick. Comfortable rooms, surrounded by nature, and a killer aerial park (don't worry, there's an indoor pool, too) are just some of the amenities you'll find there.

A Sister City Getaway

There's lots of activity along the Olympia waterfront . Find it on your Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

If you want to get away from the city, but you also don't, trade Seattle for Olympia as your Memorial Day road trip destination. There's lots to love about our state's capital, and the drive down is one of the perks. Olympia is just over two hours from the city, making the trek is totally doable, plus you can find lots of excuses to pull of I-5 and explore if the kids get antsy. To get your weekend off on the right foot, take the kids to the Hands On Children's Museum. With its impressive two-story slide and fascinating exhibits, your kids could play all day (hint: if you let them, they just might). And the Olympia waterfront is equally as engaging, especially on a sunny day. The Farmer's Market will be in full swing. Bring your reusable bag, appetite (there are great food stalls there) and enjoy live music as you shop. Then wander over to the waterfront where you'll find a viewing tower, playground and stroller-friendly boardwalk that goes all the way to the capitol. If rain is in the forecast, duck into Defy Olympia, the roller skating rink or catch the Alphabatastics at the Olympia Family Theater.

Stay at: Finding a cute Airbnb is always a great option when you're traveling with kids and need the comforts of home. But if you're looking to stay in the heart of Olympia where you're within walking distance of most of the city's highlights, the DoubleTree by Hilton is a great choice.

An Oasis in the Mountains

courtesy Suncadia Resort

Super easy to get to (assuming Snoqualmie Pass is traffic-free), Suncadia Resort offers a posh experience, yet is casual, kid-friendly and a bit adventurous. Set on the sunny eastern slopes of the Cascades, 80 miles east of Seattle, families visiting Suncadia for the three-day weekend can enjoy golfing, biking, hiking trails and horseback riding, as well as all the fab resort amenities including a swim and fitness center (with two splash-tastic water slides and an indoor and outdoor pool), the pool at Nelson Farm, fine and casual dining, an outdoor amphitheater and spa services. Lots of special spring activities are planned this year, including float trips, roller skate and scooter rentals, outdoor movies at Nelson Farm (hint: Goonies kicks off the season Memorial Day weekend), axe throwing and art classes the whole family will enjoy.

Bonus: While at Suncadia, be sure to check out the cute City of Rosyln (remember the TV show Northern Exposure?), the City of Cle Elum and Lake Cle Elum where you can rent boats, jet skis and more!

A Popular Locale East of the Cascades

Allison Sutcliffe

If you’re looking for drier weather and warmer temps, you’ll want to head east to Lake Chelan. Located 3.5 hours from Seattle, this family-friendly destination is surrounded by fabulous wineries, beautiful orchards and rolling hills, not to mention the crystal blue waters of Lake Chelan. Many local businesses take the winter off. So Memorial Day weekend is a great time to visit. Local favorites like Slidewaters (one of the Northwest’s largest and most popular water parks) and its sister park Lakeside Surf open that weekend, as does Ralley Alley Go-Karts and the Putting Course at Don Morse Park. And the Lady of the Lake starts making more than express trips up the 55-mile fjord to Stehekin over Memorial Day weekend as well. It's a great way to spend the day and see some of the state's most remote areas.

Stay at: Because it's always easier to stay at a place that has the comforts of home when you're traveling with kids, The Lookout at Chelan is an easy option. Individual vacation homes with hot tubs and BBQs are just the beginning of the comforts you crave. Private beach access, two pools, pocket parks and playgrounds are the other perks that are hard to beat. Beyond this vacation community, families can find tons of tent-cation or condo-cation accommodations to choose from at Lake Chelan.

An Island Adventure with Options

A child waits for the ferry in Anacortes on the way to San Juan Isldands for a Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

With numerous places to stay, camp or glamp, and several islands to hop, a three-day weekend getaway to the San Juan Islands is the perfect option for families itching to get out of town. Since island life is slower-paced, you’ll need to remember to pack your patience (and you can practice that in the ferry line when you reach Anacortes). No matter which island you choose, there’s something fun for everyone. The kids will have a blast kayaking and exploring historic parks. Everyone can enjoy boating, learning about Orca whales and looking for treasures on the beach. But these islands aren't just about beaches and bonfires. Mountain climbs and secret waterfalls are in the mix too. It's an outdoor lovers paradise.

Stay at: With so many choices to stay and so many possibilities for fun, Memorial Day Weekend 2022 might just be your family’s best one yet. But if you want a resort that has a little bit of something for everyone, you can't got wrong with Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes. It's got a family summer camp vibe that's hard to beat, and it's on San Juan Island. Also on San Juan Island: Roche Harbor or the Earthbox Inn & Spa. Our other island favorites include Pebble Cove Farm, Rosario Resort & Spa and West Beach Resort on Orcas and the Lopez Islander Resort on Lopez.

Good to know: Anacortes ferry reservations are a must! Reserve online before you go.

A Vacation in the Valley

Yakima Valley Tourism

Consider vacationing in the Yakima Valley for your extended Memorial Day weekend. A fantastic road trip destination, it's just over two hours from the city, and there's a good chance you'll have sunshine while you're there (the area boasts over 300 days of it annually). The Valley is all about farms, bikes and wonderful wineries—outside is the way to recreate here. Rent ebikes from Boost Bikes so you can go that extra mile (or more), and be sure to stop by one of the area's farms or fruit stands for seasonal veggies (don't miss the asparagus!). If you time it right, you might even be able to pick fresh strawberries at Bill's Berry Farm; they plan to open the fields May 21. And the Yakima Valley Museum's new mountaineering exhibit tells the story of four climbers who summited Mt. Rainier. Beyond these family adventures, you'll find lots of weekend-specific activities too. Prosser Aquatic Center is offering free family swim from May 28-30, and the summer concert series at VanArnam Vineyards start Memorial Day weekend. You can't go wrong with an outdoor concert, especially when kids under 16 don't need a ticket and dogs are welcome.

Where to Find Family Fun This Memorial Day Weekend

NYC living spaces tend to be small. Add kids—and all of their stuff—and what do you have? No more room! If it’s time for some spring cleaning and you’re looking for somewhere to donate or sell unwanted items in NYC, you have plenty of options. From consignment shops that will give you cash for nearly-new kid’s clothes to civic programs that facilitate donating to non-profits, here’s our list of resources for helping you make a clean sweep! Plus, lots of ways to get stuff for free in NYC.

The Big Picture On Donating Things in NYC

Good news: there are many, many organizations that will take your stuff! We have several big players below, but know that city agency donateNYC has a vast database of places that will accept donations, many of which will pick up. Head to the donateNYC website where you can search by donation category and zip code to find places near you.

Online: nyc.gov

If you live in a building with 10 or more units, consider setting up a permanent donation bin on-site, through the city program refashionNYC, a free and convenient clothing donation and recycling service. The program’s partnership with Housing Works offers convenient collection while fighting the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS. It’s also available for businesses, office buildings, and schools.

Where to Donate Clothes, Toys & Household Goods

Out of the Closet

Established on the west coast and now operating numerous stores nationwide, Out of the Closet is a queer-friendly non-profit organization. At the NYC store in Boerum Hill, you'll find your usual fare of clothing and shoes, but also an amazing collection of furniture, books and vinyl records. Out of the Closet isn't just an excellent thrift store: It also has a pharmacy and offers sexual wellness assistance and HIV testing for free. For every dollar that you spend at the thrift store, 96 cents goes directly to patient and homeless care.

Small donations can be dropped off at the store. You can also schedule a large donation pick-up by calling 1-800-558-8220. To contact the store email info@outofthecloset.org.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is one of the better-known charities and thrift store organizations in the country. It funds six free child care spaces in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, and provides services to youth, adults, emergencies, and more. Items that you donate will directly help fund the Adult Rehabilitation Centers, where people can get help with drug and alcohol addictions.

There are more than a dozen stores in NYC, and you can find one in every borough. Schedule a free donation pickup using their online form, which lets you specify what's being picked up and how much of it there is. Of course, you can also go to any location to drop off your donations. Accepted items include most clothing, appliances, and household goods. A visit to the Salvation Army thrift store is a great way to pick up some gently used clothes for a discount (every day has a discount on a different color tag) or some more unusual items like vintage dolls and lamps or an air fryer (an outlet is generally available to plug in appliances to make sure they work).

The Salvation Army also accepts donations of vehicles, from cars and motorcycles to boats and RVs.

Online: satruck.org

Goodwill

Goodwill is another well-known name for charity donations and thrifting. Items that are accepted include clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, handbags, and household goods. Your donations support community members who need assistance getting back on their feet and finding jobs. Want to see the difference your spring cleaning can make on the world? You can even calculate the impact you'll make when you donate

Although Goodwill does do pickups, the donation has to be substantial: A minimum of 50 bags or boxes is required. Despite this, the charity makes it as easy as possible to make donations. Goods can be brought to Goodwill locations or placed in Goodwill donation bins. The website suggests using TaskRabbit to bring in donations if you're unable to do so yourself (use promo code GWNYNJ-10 to get $10 off your first TaskRabbit order). A portion of the fee you pay will be donated to local nonprofits.

If you're looking to do some thrifting, Goodwill is an excellent place for picking up brand-name clothing for a more reasonable price. For the serious thrifter, here's a tip: Visit NYC's Goodwill Outlet at 47-47 Van Dam St. in Long Island City, Queens to buy goods by the pound. (It's true. But we recommend bringing gloves.)

Online: goodwillnynj.org

GrowNYC Greenmarket clothing collection

GrowNYC will show up again on this list for their swap events, but you can also donate your clothing to the organization at any of its eight locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Only textile goods are accepted at these donation spots, including clothing, shoes, linens, handbags, belts, and other fabric and textile items. (Fabric rolls or scraps, rugs, pillows, comforters, and luggage are not accepted.)

Donations are sorted by condition, then either redistributed to secondhand markets or recycled as rags or low-grade fiber products like insulation — making this an excellent option for those items of clothing that don't qualify as "gently" used.

Online: grownyc.org

BigReuse

Have an item that you don't need but someone else might? BigReuse, a non-profit dedicated to reducing waste, will take it! While you're welcome to donate small items like books, clothing, and small home goods at the Brooklyn location, free pickup can be scheduled for larger items. BigReuse accepts donations of appliances, home goods and decor, furniture, plumbing, media, lighting, kitchen fixtures, tiles, paint, lumber, tools, renovation supplies, and more. Note that you'll need to send a picture of the item(s) you're donating when you schedule a pickup.

BigReuse also has a compost project, providing over a dozen places around the city where you can bring your scraps to add to the compost heap.

St. Mary’s Clothing Drive

St. Mary’s Clothing Drive, run by St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, can’t make it any easier to donate clothes and other items. (Although you must be in the service area, which is mostly Brooklyn.) Just head to the website, schedule a pickup, label your bags and wait for them to whisk your donation away. (They even leave you a receipt.)

Held every month or so, this event starts with a HIIT session, then winds down with relaxing yoga. The workout is stress-free and features plenty of modifications for different levels of fitness. Where does the donation come in? Bring your gently used clothes to support the charity of the month! Where To Donate Art Supplies

Materials for the Arts

Parents know how easy it is to accumulate random art supplies. Materials for the Arts (MFTA) is a great place to offload the art clutter from the various artistic phases of your kids—or you. MFTA accepts all art supplies and goods, but is especially keen on paper, fabric, arts & crafts supplies, buttons and beads. The organization will also accept small appliances, hardware, and household items — from electronics to pianos. They'll then pair your items with the perfect recipients from the city's artistic and educational communities.

You can mail your donations to MFTA's Long Island City location (they ask they you include a copy of their donation drop-off form from their website). To request help with large donations or schedule a drop-off donation, email donations@mfta.nyc.gov.

How to Reduce Waste: Swap or Get Free Stuff (or Donate)

Facebook Groups

You know that bread maker you bought during quarantine that you used twice and has since been gathering dust in your kitchen? There's someone out there who'd love to have it. That's where freecycle and swap Facebook groups come in.

These are private groups, so you may need to wait to be accepted into the group. Once you're in, these groups are generally very active, friendly communities where you'll find a huge variety of items being given away, from tables, dressers, and chairs, to plants, baby clothes, and books for kids. Members will often give a heads up if the house has a cat or a dog for anyone with allergies or phobias. You can post to give things away and or post a request for an item you've been on the lookout for.

You'll find Facebook groups for the boroughs, like Brooklyn and Manhattan. There are also some nabe-specific groups, like this one for Forest Hills or one for Williamsburg, Bushwick and Ridgewood.

Grow NYC

These community swaps are held fairly frequently in many different locations — so a swap is likely to come to your area before long. (Of course, they took a break due to the pandemic, but the events are coming back. Face masks are required as of this writing.) It works like this: You bring items you want to donate, then take home any items you want. That's it! You don't have to bring something to take something either, so feel free to just show up if you're all out of goods to donate.

Most small items are accepted, like clothing, housewares, games, books, and toys. Basically, if you can safely carry it out, you can bring it. Items like furniture, old TVs, unsealed or expired food or personal care products, electronics, or sharp objects aren't allowed.

Pro tip: The clothes get taken really quickly, especially children's clothes, but there are often cool toys. Our finds have included a mechanical dinosaur and a brand new large bulldog plushie—immediately washed when home. Books and housewares like plates are frequent good finds here, too. Plan to stick around for a while — items are constantly replenished as more goods are donated.

NYC Fair Trade Coalition

This event isn't completely free, but you're supporting a good cause: The coalition supports businesses that produce goods with the planet's wellbeing in mind. The end goal is to make consumers more conscious of their shopping habits and the amount of waste created in the clothing industry every year.

Donating items is free, of course, but checking out will cost you $15 flat (though you can save some money by pre-purchasing your checkout ticket on Eventbrite). You can check out with up to 10 items, but check in with as much as you want: The coalition only accepts clothes, and will now even take your "unswappable" items and recycle them.

Freecycle

This website allows users to post items they're looking to give away or to find. While there's a general "NYC" tag, there are also sections for more specific locations, including Roosevelt Island , Brooklyn and Manhattan. The site is quite active and features some pretty random stuff. Items we saw listed recently include a bagful of yarn, crutches, a sewing machine and even an old piano.

Online: freecycle.org

Trash Nothing

Trash Nothing is another online community where you can post about items you're getting rid of or ones you'd like to acquire. This site is fairly active, and you'll find a variety of items listed, including really nice furniture, vases, packing supplies, books and tons more.

Plant Swaps

Are you tired of seeing the same plants and want to swap them out for some new ones? Or have you officially bought too many plants and can no longer see your floor? No problem: There are some options for you! Among the things you can swap in NYC, perhaps surprisingly, plants do make the list.

Around springtime, especially, you'll find events like this one held by Supermad, where plant parents can come in and swap greens without spending any. Pay a visit to the Little Free Library of plants in Bushwick, Plantita. Or join the NYC plant swap group on Facebook and find a thriving community of plant lovers who trade and sell plants and clippings, and offer each other advice on all manners of green thumb queries.

16 Awesome Road Trip Ideas for Spring Break

See the Sea Life at These Nearby Tide Pools

Never mind the snow: spring is coming! It might seem early to be making plans to garden with the kids, but the truth is, it’s almost time to start seeds indoors! (A cool, educational thing to do with kids in the final days of winter.) Lots of families learned the joy of urban gardening when it swept NYC last year, and rest assured: anyone can grow and nurture plants with some research and the right advice. We spoke to local experts about how you can garden with kids in NYC whether you have a windowsill or a wide open field. Read on to get growing!

The Basics: What You Need to Get Started

Neslihan Gunaydin via Unsplash

You know this from grammar school—heck, your kids know this from grammar school—but just to review, these are the key ingredients for happy, healthy plants.

Emily Carter, Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Children’s Garden Assistant Coordinator, stresses that getting these basic plant needs right will lead to a good experience for both your family and the plants: "Remember that sun, water, and nutrients (healthy soil) are the fundamentals of happy plants, so focus on how you can provide those basics."

Location, location, location
First, some good news: You can grow many things indoors, as long as you pick your plants carefully. If you're gardening for the first time, that's the first thing you'll need to consider — your available space.

Where will you put your plants? You can grow plants indoors, grow them in-ground or in pots outdoors, use a window box, or some combination of these. The space you have for your little garden will determine what kinds of plants you get, so give it some thought before you go seed shopping!

Sunlight
Another important factor to consider is the sunlight available in your space.

Does your place get a lot of natural light throughout the day, or are you working with a square foot of direct sunlight for an hour in the morning? (That's the experience of this writer, and we still managed to get some plants to grow, so don't be disheartened!) Even if you have outdoor space, think about how often it's in shadow. Depending on the amount of sunlight you have at your disposal, you can consider supplementing the natural sunlight with some grow lights, but it's often easier to choose to grow plants that suitable to the conditions you have.

Quality soil
Not all soil is made equal! The NYC Parks Department describes the best potting soils as containing "peat, sphagnum moss, perlite, and vermiculite." Stay away from the dollar store stuff and invest in a quality soil that contains those components listed as primary ingredients. It really makes all the difference!

Water
Once you get your plants situated, you'll need to water them, of course. You don't need any special sources or water here: Tap water — and NYC tap water in particular — should be perfectly safe for your plants, though it's recommended that you leave the water sitting until it's room temperature to reduce the chances of shock from the temperature shift in the soil.

You might think that the more water, the better but the truth is actually closer to the opposite: Many first time plant owners tend to overwater their plants, causing them to die! Juliette Vassilkioti, founder of NYC-based indoor plant experts My City Plants, recommends that you make sure top of soil is completely dry before watering your plant. (You can stick a finger into the top inch of soil to make sure it's dry — a task the kids are sure to love taking part in!)

”Easy-to-grow Starter Plants”

”Katya Austin via Unsplash ″

Are you getting plants because you think they’re beautiful or delicious? Do you want your kids to actively participate or do you plan to turn the experience into a full teaching moment? Your reasons for starting a garden (indoor or out) will guide your plant- and seed-purchasing decisions.

Set yourself up for success by picking plants that are more forgiving of beginners. Here are some of the best starter plants for first-time gardeners and budding young botanists.

Vegetables & Herbs

Davor Denkovski via Unsplash

Both Carter from the BBG and the gardeners at Wave Hill recommend leafy greens and culinary herbs for growing plants with kids. Plants like lettuce, arugula, mesclun, mustard greens, basil, thyme, mint, and oregano are not only easy to grow, but they also "put on growth that kids can harvest at any stage and don't have to wait for a whole season," point out Wave Hill experts.

Carter notes that "These plants have edible leaves, which means they require less solar energy and time to be edible. Plants like tomatoes require much more solar energy and time to grow leaves, flowers, fruits, etc. Therefore, they are not the best match for small indoor spaces." (In general, vegetables and fruits need a lot of direct sunlight.)

If you do have an outdoor space that gets six to eight hours of sun available, Wave Hill and the BBG name eggplant, pepper, and tomato as good plants to start indoors. Move them outside when the weather warms, whether your plan is to replant them in the ground or into larger pots. You can either start these from seed (more on that below) or buy "starter", or smaller plants at your local garden center. If you do plan on potting your plants in containers, know that some varieties have been developed specifically for growing in containers, which means you'll likely have more success with them.

If you have the luxury of a patch of sunny soil, Carter recommends radishes and carrots. "If you can grow in-ground, many radish varieties have a quick harvest turnaround and carrots come in lots of exciting colors."

Beans and other legumes are a good choice for beginning botany. Per Wave Hill, "[They are] a fun crop because they offer an introduction to seed biology and plant structure. The large seeds produce cotyledons and roots that help kids visualize how seeds can transform into full-grown plants."

You can also settle somewhere in between by planting the BBG's recommended choices for large outdoor pots, whether that's in your garden or in a window box: Herbs like rosemary, lavender, lemon balm, cilantro, and dill. (Hot tip: cilantro often "bolts" or produces seeds, especially as the weather warms; one way to maintain a supply is to periodically seed throughout the season.)

Flowers

Robert Zunikoff via Unsplash

If you're looking to brighten up your space and attract wildlife and insects, flowers are a great choice.  BBG's Carter recommends marigolds (shown above)— their seeds germinate easily indoors and they can be moved into larger outdoor pots later in the spring. Nasturtium are also a good choice— you'll need to soak their seeds overnight then start them indoors or plant them directly outside in May. (Once they flower, you can add their vibrant flowers to your salads!) "And don’t forget your giant sunflowers," adds Carter.  These are definitely outdoor plants, as they can grow up to 16 feet tall depending on the variety! (Smaller varieties are available as well.)

Planting flowers native to this area is also a good bet, as they are more likely to thrive in conditions here. For outdoor containers like window boxes, balcony pots, or gardens,  NYC Parks suggests planting native perennials, which return every year, such as milkweed... bee balm, and native grasses which are great for bees, butterflies, and moths."

A mix of flowers and herbs can also be used to create a sensory garden with plants that stimulate the senses with "Strong smells (basil, mint), unique textures (nasturtium, snap dragons), beautiful colors that attract pollinators (zinnias, marigolds, and other flowers)."

When to Plant Seeds

Markus Spiske via Unsplash

When to plant inside
For plants you plan to move outdoors, start them from seeds about six weeks before the last frost, which typically occurs in NYC in April. So if you plan to move your plants outdoors in early May (past May 7 is officially listed as a "safe" time to plant without fear of frost), you'll need to start your seeds around late March.

Wave Hill's gardeners add that "many warm-season vegetables such as tomatoes and eggplant benefit from transplanting seedlings. But most vegetables and flowers that are recommended to be started indoors can also be direct-sown, you just have to be a little more patient. The most important factor in timing seed starting is your area’s last, frost-free date and the specific needs of each plant."

Some seeds may need extra help
Know what your plant needs to do its thing. For example, some plants like basil, tomato, and pepper can only germinate when the soil is warm (between 65- and 85-degrees Fahrenheit), so if you're planting inside to get things started, consider buying a heat mat or placing the seed tray above your heater.

When to plant outside
If you're planting your seeds directly in the ground outdoors, they'll require a bit more care. In addition to choosing your planting time based on the need of each plant, you'll also need to consider compost, mulch, and pest control.

Mid-April to mid-May is a good time to start planting outdoors, since you're likely to be safe from frost by then. According to NYC Parks, April and May are also when you'd typically plant flowering plants like dahlias, sunflowers, and cosmos.

But at the end of the day, each plant has its own needs and requirements. "Remember," says Carter, "The back of seed packets and a quick internet search of the plants you hope to grow will let you know exactly what each plant needs, to better guide your decisions."

Additional food for thought
Whether you're sowing outside or starting your seeds indoors, Carter also has some more intuitive advice if you want your little garden to yield vegetables and other edible goodies: "If you are hoping to grow outside, a good way to gauge timing is to think about what is 'in-season' in your grocery store throughout the year. Radish peas, beets, and arugula are the freshest in the spring, which means that starting your seeds in late winter will allow you to have a harvest several months later. Tomato, pepper, zucchini, beans, and eggplant is fresh and abundant at the farmers market in the summer. They like to grow in warm temperatures, which tells you that starting those seeds may be best in early to mid-spring so that they can grow big in the summer heat."

"Again," says Carter, "refer to your seed packets when you are thinking about timing for your plants! Agricultural extension webpages can give more specific seed starting times for the region that you live in, but it’s also exciting to think intuitively and follow the weather patterns of your area."

Where to Get Seeds

Hudson Valley Seed Company

The easiest places to get seeds and starter plants are plant nurseries, hardware stores, and garden centers. There are also many, many seed resources online (packages from one of our favorites Hudson Valley Seed Company shown here), but it can be fun to go to a store and pick out the seed packets with the kids. Know that the hard-core gardeners are already snapping up packets online and some seeds are selling out.

You can support NYC businesses by shopping local — we have a list of some great places to check out in our roundup of stores that got gardeners through the early days of the pandemic last spring! (They delivered then, and they'll deliver now if you need them to.)

Beyond shopping around, there's one other excellent place where you can get some great plants to start with: Your kitchen. "Get creative!" says Carter. "You can use kitchen scraps to experiment with regrowing plants, try planting nuts and seeds you find outside, and reuse milk cartons or plastic drink containers to house your plants." Be sure to punch drainage holes at the base of recycled containers.

See What Works

Tilth Alliance @ Good Shepherd Center, Children's Garden

In the end, it's important to remember that while science is a big part of gardening, it's not an exact science. Any seasoned gardener will tell you that trial and error is part of the process; it often takes seeing what doesn't work to find out what does. "The best lesson that we have learned in our gardening journeys is to 'give it a try!'," says Carter of the BBG. "Plants are very resilient and the best way to learn is to put a seed in soil and keep track of what happens. Some may die and others may thrive, but diving right into the experience is the best way to learn."

So go get dirty this spring—and have fun!
