While it feels a lot like the cold weather isn’t going anywhere soon (because, well, it technically is still winter), your babe’s skin will always need TLC. We’re talking the art of baby skincare, and with chilly weather, it’s just as important to focus on as it is during the summer. Of course, it’s a little different when the seasons change. A combination of dry indoor heat, cold air, low humidity levels, and harsh winter wind creates the perfect environment for your babe’s skin to need extra moisture. As with all thing baby-related, there are an astounding amount of product options, and naturally, you’re looking for the best baby lotions available. That’s where we come in.

Whether you’re into all-natural, ultra-sensitive skin formulas, rich creams, or lightweight lotions, we’ve got you covered. Actually, we’ve got your baby covered. From their fuzzy little heads to their sweet toes, you’ll be able to help protect them all though the season. Why use a baby lotion? Because they help replenish and retain their skin’s moisture level. That’s important year-round, obviously, but especially in the fall and winter. Protecting your baby’s skin barrier from birth with regular moisturizing is even linked to preventing food allergies. So keep a bottle of one of our best baby lotion picks upstairs, downstairs, and in your diaper bag. You won’t want to be without them.

February’s birthstone represents empowerment and inner strength

Babies with a February birthday are pretty unique, as some only have a birthday every four years! Plus, those with February birthdays might be more creative (if they’re Pisces), be taller than their peers, and be revolutionary (if they’re Aquarius). If you want to know more fun facts about kids with February’s birthdays and even a few silly facts about February’s birth sign, we’ve got it all right here.

February birthdays are more uncommon, and Leap Year birthdays are rare

Not only is it a short month, which leads to fewer February birthdays, but a Leap Day baby only gets to celebrate the actual day every four years. According to Unity Point Health, 1 in 1,491 people is born on February 29th, so although you might celebrate on a different day most years, it’s fun to throw an extra-special birthday party every four years. February 2024 is a Leap Year, so get ready to celebrate in a big way if you’ve got a Leap Day baby!

Your February baby might be taller than others

A Harvard University study of over 21,000 kids shows that winter babies are consistently born longer, heavier, and with a larger head circumference. The study was conducted over seven years and tested kids at birth, eight months, age 4, and age 7; researchers believe that seasonal issues for both pregnant moms and babies, like diet, exposure to sunlight and temperature, and viruses, may play a role in a baby’s characteristics.

But babies born in February have a higher chance of being born early

According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, there’s a significant spike (nearly 10%) in early births for women who conceived in May, which means their delivery dates fall in February of the following year. What’s the reason? These moms are in late-term pregnancy during peak flu season, which is known to cause pre-term births.

A February birth sign can be Aquarius or Pisces

Will your baby be innovative, a team player, and a rebel at heart like others born under the sign of Aquarius? Or will your kid show signs of empathy, compassion, and being creative like other Pisces? More importantly, how compatible are you with your child? Check out our parent/child compatibility chart to find out.

February’s birthstone is the amethyst

People with February birthdays claim amethyst as their birthstone. The stunning purple variety of quartz has mesmerized people for thousands of years and can often be found in royal jewel collections in Europe and Asia. The gem represents empowerment and inner strength.

Your kid shares their special month with these celebrities born in February

Many celebrities and historical figures share your kiddo’s celebratory month: Abe Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Steve Jobs, Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Taylor, Henry Golding, Danai Gurira, Laura Linney, Charles Darwin, George Washington, Nina Simone, and more.

It used to be one of my favorite things about Christmas. Every year, I would sit down with a pencil and paper and make my list. When I was three years old, I asked my grandparents for “an alligator with leg irons.” No one knew what I meant (myself included), so they got me a toy alligator accordion. Close enough, I guess?

One year I asked for a Dream Dancer doll—a mechanical ballerina doll that twirled and spun on a platform that looked like a shimmering stage. (Shout-out to any other ’80s babies out there—if you know, you know.) When I got older, I asked for sketchbooks and colored pencils, books by my favorite authors, or the clothes I had been pining for at Nordstrom’s. It wasn’t hard to come up with things I wanted—and I had the great privilege of having two sets of grandparents who were happy to buy me things like art supplies, books, and new clothes.

Somewhere along the line, though, all that changed. Sure, I would sometimes drop a hint to my mom or my sister about something I could really use (thanks for the warm gloves and the Zappos gift card!). But once I became a mom, the locus of Christmas became solidly fixed on our only child, the youngest grandchild on both sides of the family.

The only list now was hers—what did she want for Christmas? It was almost as fun, really, to add items to this new list: toys she would like to play with, cute new PJs, a nice winter coat, or a sled. And it was easy, if someone asked, to say, “Oh, I don’t need anything this year” and look forward to unwrapping a new bathrobe or whatever, while the rest of the family enjoyed their gifts.

Putting my kid first was one of the ways I was initiated into being a mom. In much the same way that I often convinced myself that, no, I didn’t really need to pee while I was nursing my daughter or waiting for her to finally fall asleep, I had convinced myself that I really didn’t need… well, anything. That last piece of bread? Go ahead and have it. Are you cold? You can wear my coat; I’ll be fine. It became automatic, until after a while, it got hard to know where my needs ended and hers began—or if I even had any needs left.

But you know what? My daughter doesn’t need any new LEGOs; she wants them. And maybe, just maybe, there are things that I want, too. So this year, I’m breaking the tradition of being the mom who says that all she wants is “just a nice Christmas with my family.” I mean, yes, I absolutely do want that. But you know what else I want? A new pair of joggers. Nice ones. Ones I can actually wear in public and look kind of cute in, that aren’t stained or stretched out or secondhand.

And you know what else? I want a cute hanging planter for my sad houseplant that’s been living less than its best life in an old Mason jar behind the kitchen sink. I want to put my cute little houseplant in a cute little planter and I want to hang it in my home office so that everyone can see it in my Zoom background, because while my room will never rate anywhere close to a 10 out of 10, I am not above striving to do better.

And while we’re at it, I would absolutely love some AirPods. Why do I need AirPods when I have perfectly good corded headphones and literally never leave my desk? Guess what, I don’t need them. I just want them. Other people have them, and they come in a cute little case, and yes, I will almost certainly lose them and/or put them through the laundry, but you know what? I still want them.

It feels a bit daring, a bit risky, a bit selfish to even express these wants to myself—to just have desires that are only for me. It was even scarier to say them out loud to my family. But it also felt kind of amazing. And I’m not mad that my daughter will grow up knowing that moms have wants, and needs, and aren’t afraid to express them. Well, maybe a little bit afraid—but at least I’m trying.

From being an early riser to having several birthstones, people with a December birthday are a special bunch

Being a December baby can sometimes feel like a downer because birthdays can get forgotten in the holiday rush. But the truth is that people with a December birthday are impossible to overlook. While being born in November isn’t very common, December babies (especially those born on Dec. 25) are some of the rarest of them all. Here are some attributes you might not know about your December baby.

Late December Birthdays Are Rare

It might be a celebratory distraction to be born on a big holiday, like Christmas, but the truth is it’s very rare to be born on Dec. 25, which makes those birthdays pretty special. In fact, Christmas Day is the least likely day of the year to be born, ranking at 366th with just over 6,500 births on average. Dec. 24 is also a rare one, ranking at 364th, and Dec. 26 comes in at 361st.

Some December Baby Names Are Related to the Holidays (but Not All)

While some December baby names are related to the holidays (think Joesph, Eve, Noelle, Nicolas), according to Nameberry, other names to give babies born in the last month of the year range from those inspired by light (Lucien) and December's flower (Narcissa, Holly), to the Winter Solstice (Talvi), and good fortune (Felix).

They're Less Moody As Adults

While we can’t make any guarantees when it comes to those terrible twos (and threes), according to research, people with a December birthday are less irritable as adults than those born in other months. A Hungarian study found that those born in the winter months, like December, were least likely to suffer from mood swings. So while the weather might be chilly outside when your December baby is born, expect to get a lot of warmth from these little charmers as they get older.

A baby smiles and laughs in front of a Christmas tree as he holds up a present

They’re Bold Explorers

With all this talk of birthdays, you might ask, what is the zodiac sign for people born in December? Babies born before Dec. 21 are ruled by Sagittarius, the archer, meaning that you can expect wisdom, determination, and a bold attitude. These spitfires are also known being adventurous travelers, so get your world map ready. If their birthday comes after Dec. 21, that makes them a Capricorn. Represented by the goat, this zodiac sign for December implies that your baby will be ambitious and highly disciplined while also good-natured. So, in other words, they have a great work ethic.

They're Rich in Birthstones

What is December's birthstone? Lucky for December babies, they have four beautiful blue-hued gems to choose from if you include the blue topaz. The topaz is known for its sparkle, variety of colors, and affordability (a win-win for birthday gifts), although some history and jewelry experts argue that blue topaz does not represent December. Even if that's the case, you're still left with three gorgeous gems: the calming and ever-popular turquoise, the unique purple-blue tanzanite, and the blue-green zircon (said to be one of the oldest materials on earth).

Four smiling children who were born in December stand in a classroom

They’re the Head of the Class

Depending on what your school entry cut-offs are, your December baby is either one of the youngest in the class or the oldest. Either way, they are on track to be one of the brightest. While some studies show that kids who are the oldest in their class are more successful in academics, other research has shown that being the youngest also has an advantage by the time kids prepare to graduate high school, with the youngest outperforming their older classmates by the time they are applying for college. Either way, it's a win.

They’re Early Risers

A study of human circadian rhythms found that those born in winter months, including December, were more likely to be morning people, which means at least you’ll face a smiling tot when you’re up at the crack of dawn. Better still, other similar studies found that those born during the same season were more likely to go to bed earlier, which means more me-time for mom and a more efficient schedule going forward.

Celebrities with a December Birthday

Some famous December babies include Walt Disney, Beethoven, and Jane Austen. Do you like movies and television? There's a VIP list filled with celebrities born in December such as actresses Lucy Liu, Amanda Seyfried, and Julianne Moore, as well as film director Judd Apatow. Mckayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas, two Team USA Gymnastics gold medalists, were born in December. Dec. 30 alone marks the birthdate of several iconic baseball players in history including Sandy Koufax, Frank Torre, and Jose Morales.

There’s something about twinkling lights that gets us in the holiday spirit—that is, after we’ve picked up the best Christmas tree and made an initial pass through LA’s best toy stores for gifts. And while Los Angeles may not have the winter weather charm of those cities that actually see a white Christmas, our palm trees sure can prop up Christmas lights just as magically as their evergreen cousins can. From the sprawling sea of bulbs at Descanso Gardens to festive local neighborhoods layered in all things merry and bright, LA’s got its share of impressive holiday light displays.

This article is sponsored by Kidspace Children’s Museum, a children’s museum located in Pasadena, CA with over 40 unique hands-on exhibits that engage for kids 10 and under emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Now through January 7, Kidspace is transforming into a winter wonderland with the return of “Kidspace Winter Frolic,” where little ones can enjoy imaginative, cold-weather activities—without the snow!

The Best Holiday Lights near LA That are Totally Worth the Drive

Astra Lumina  at the South Bay Botanic Garden

What if you could walk amongst the stars? That's the question asked by Moment Factory, the visionary multimedia company (they do visuals for Billie Eilish!) behind Astra Lumina, a luminous night walk that uses projections, lasers, and sounds to immerse visitors in a celestial world where the stars "descend to Earth." You'll walk through dark forests bathed in twinkling lights, see stars seemingly rise and fall from the sky, and set out on a trail that features 10 distinct areas to explore, with names like "Starlit Lanterns," "Falling Stars," and "Starburst Rays." At each stop, guests are invited to mingle with the lights as they are blanketed in the projected stars.

This is the 17th of Moment Factory's Night Walk series—and the fourth American incarnation. If this walk is anything like the ones before it (Travel and Leisure called Night Walk "unlike any hike you’ve ever been on"), it's sure to wow you and all your little stargazers.

Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza

Homeowners pull out all the stops for this annual neighborhood Lights Extravaganza (which also calls itself Candy Cane Lane), where you'll see everything from soaring lights across rooftops to simple nativity scenes set on yards. Every house has its own unique theme, and you'll want to see them all. Consequently, it will take at least an hour to walk the network of neighborhoods that encompasses the event (the sidewalks are safe, and strollers are welcome). You can drive through the area, but make sure your kids use the restrooms before you get there, because traffic is usually at a slow crawl throughout (you'll appreciate this when you want to take in the view—not so much when you have a toddler who has to go potty).

Hungry? Stop at one of the many front yard bake sales, where you and your kids can nosh on cookies and cocoa (bring at least 10 bucks for a family of four, as most items are $1-2 each).

Insider Tip: Start at Roberts Rd. in Torrance (entrance at Pacific Coast Hwy.) and walk or drive around adjacent streets (including Doris Way, Carol Dr., Linda Dr., Reeese Rd. and Sharynne Ln.). If you plan on walking, park on Pacific Coast Hwy., Calle Mayor or Prospect, and walk toward Roberts Rd.

Holidays at Disneyland

It's hard to talk about holiday lights in Los Angeles without mentioning Disneyland. Sure, the Happiest Place on Earth is already sky-high in "wow factor," but the resort ups its merriment ante big-time over the holidays. Everywhere you turn, you'll experience holiday joy, with decor and lights strewn all over the park and the"Believe in Holiday Magic" fireworks display ending the night with stirring music, snow showers, and a spectacular light show.

The lights also dazzle at California Adventure, where the streets are similarly adorned. And it's not just for Christmas: Across the park, you'll find tributes, cuisine, and activities related to the season's other holidays, including Navidad, Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and Three Kings' Day. Several rides are totally done up for the season (including a transformed Cars Land featuring Luigi's "Joy to the Whirl" and a decked-out Mater's Jingle Jamboree. What’s the History Behind Pumpkin Carvings and Jack-O’-Lanterns?

The tradition of carving pumpkins has origins in the Irish myth of Stingy Jack. People began carving faces in turnips to keep Jack’s (and other evil spirits) soul away, and when immigrants came to the United States, they started using pumpkins. Halloween is rooted in the Gaelic celebration of Samhain, which starts on Oct. 31 and ends on Nov. 1 and celebrates bringing in the harvests and ushering in the dark winter months. People would go from house to house in search of food and drink. They would also often carve makeshift lanterns out of potatoes and other root veggies, and as the years passed, several of these traditions blended to become what we now celebrate as Halloween.

How to Use a Pumpkin Carving Template

So, you’re ready to pick your pumpkin carving stencil and get to work. But, do you know the tips and tricks for carving a pumpkin? We love this tutorial from HGTV that offers advice on how to get the best-looking pumpkin on the block. We also recommend using tracing paper with a dry-erase marker or pencil on your pumpkin and having the best tools at the ready. A serrated knife is a must, as is a big spoon for scooping out the seeds and a paring knife is good for carving. You can also invest in a pumpkin carving kit, which will include everything you need to get started.
