Waterfall Hikes in San Francisco

Huntington Falls and Rainbow Falls
Waterfalls in the city? Why, of course! Granted, these are man-made falls but the kids will still love it! Start at Huntington Falls which cascades down Strawberry Hill into Stow Lake then take the stairs behind the falls for a view from the top. Next, meander over to Rainbow Falls located on JFK Drive near Crossover Drive. While at Rainbow Falls, take the trail that leads to the Celtic-designed Prayerbook Cross.

Distance: Roughly 1.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy, has steps
Parking: Free street or nearby lots

Waterfall Hikes in the East Bay

Sunol Regional Wilderness, Sunol
Hiking to Little Yosemite Falls at Sunol Regional Wilderness will make you forget you are five miles away from a major highway! Park by the visitor's center and cross a large bridge onto Camp Ohlone Road. Follow the signs to Little Yosemite or for a longer and more scenic route to the waterfall via Indian Joe Trail. Make sure to stop at the Old Green Barn Visitor's Center where kids can see Native American artifacts and check out the naturalist-led programs at the park.

Distance: 2.2 miles
Difficulty: Mostly easy with mild elevation
Parking: $5

Codornices Park Waterfall
Codornices Park is already brimming with places to explore (40-foot slide and tunnel, anyone?!) but did you know there is also a hidden and secret waterfall? Walk past the kids' play area and up the left set of stairs. Continue left at the top before taking the winding concrete staircase up to the first lamppost where a small gate with the sign “Private Property” is. Enter (it’s ok to do so but please be quiet, clean, and respectful) and make a left up to the falls.

Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, San Ramon
We love this spot after rainfall as the creek fills with little waterfalls and pools. Keep an eye out for California newts and cows grazing nearby. Park in the staging area at the end of Bollinger Canyon Road and take the Bolinger Creek Loop trail with amazing views. Picnic tables and facilities at the trailhead mean you can pack a lunch!

Distance: 1.9 miles
Difficulty: Mostly easy with some elevation
Parking: Lot parking

Waterfall Hikes in the Peninsula

San Pedro Valley Park, Pacifica
A series of small waterfalls will greet you at the top of Brooks Creek trail along with sweeping ocean views—we recommend hiking this counterclockwise so that you are climbing on the narrow portion of the trail with the steep drop off to your left.  Benches along the way will help give little legs a rest before trekking onward.

Distance: 2.2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate, 600+ feet elevation gain
Parking: $6 cash only for lot parking, neighborhood parking is possible

Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, Redwood City
Conveniently located right off 280 in Redwood City, Edgewood is known for its picturesque picnic spots and spring wildflowers with a few small waterfalls worth discovering. Follow the Sylvan Trail and keep a lookout for deer, lizards, and other creatures that make this preserve their home.

Distance: 2.3 miles
Difficulty: Mostly easy with some elevation
Parking: Small lot near trailhead, exercise patience

Portola Redwoods State Park, La Honda
Deep in redwood country, this park has hiking options for even the youngest hikers. Stop by the visitor's center to check out animal bones before taking the Iverson Trail that starts behind the visitor’s center while watching for signs to Tiptoe Falls. Return to the visitor's center via the Sequoia Nature Trail to hike past Shell Tree, the remains of a 17-foot diameter redwood that was destroyed by a camper’s fire in 1989.

Distance: 1.6 miles
Difficulty: Mostly easy with some elevation
Parking: $10 fee

Waterfall Hikes in the South Bay

Christine Lai

Uvas Canyon County Park, Morgan Hill
One of our favorites, there are plenty of opportunities here to chase waterfalls! Start off on Waterfall Loop Trail and choose between a narrow, more challenging path that follows the south side of the creek or a wider and more suitable path for littles on the north side. Be sure you don't miss the impressive Black Rock Falls—follow the signs that head right from the Waterfall Loop Trail. For a slightly longer hike, we suggest starting out on the Contour Trail and ending via the Waterfall Loop Trail.

Distance: 1.8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Parking: Reservations required

Castle Rock Falls, Los Gatos
This short, out-and-back hike will give tiny trekkers a bird’s eye view of a waterfall and, if you’re lucky, the chance to watch rock climbers scale the waterfall! Be sure to stop at the top of the waterfall as the trail continues on for a rockier, more technically challenging portion.

Distance: 1.2 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Parking: Street possible, $10 in lot

Sanborn County Park, Saratoga
Just a short drive from downtown Saratoga will get you to Sanborn County Park. Turn right after the ranger station and park near the visitor's center (look for salamanders after a rainy day in the nearby ponds). Start by exploring the Nature Trail where you will find many smaller waterfalls. More adventurous hikers can continue on the steep (but short) Peterson Trail to the Sanborn Trail for another great waterfall.

Distance: 1.4 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Parking: $6

Waterfall Hikes in Marin

Takuya Mori

Cataract Falls, Fairfax
Marin is well-known for its many beautiful waterfalls and Cataract Falls is at the top of the list! Opposite to the AllTrails suggestion, park at the Rock Springs parking lot to hike along Cataract Trail to Cataract Falls as Bolinas Ridge road is currently closed. This hike is best suited for older children as it is rocky and has some elevation. Reward efforts with a stop by the super popular Double Rainbow Cafe for ice cream and frozen yogurt after!

Distance: 2.8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate with 1000 feet elevation gain
Parking: Streets

Dawn Falls at Blithedale Summit Preserve, Larkspur
Winter is when  this forest comes alive! Dawn Falls Trail loop follows a creek before climbing up to a ridge line and is one of the more challenging ones on our list but we promise you it is worth the trek! The end of the trail is technical and steep so be sure the family has hiking shoes with traction; this hike is best for kids sure-footed kids 5+.

Distance: 2.7 miles
Difficulty: Moderate with technical portions of the trail
Parking: Neighborhood streets

Cascade Falls, Mill Valley
The constant sound of the rushing creek and bridge crossings all await on this awesome family-friendly trail.  Perfect for beginner and tot-sized hikers, the entire family will enjoy this hike. Difficulty: Easy with some elevation gain
Parking: $10

Want to be let in on a secret? Lake Tahoe might be known for its winter and summer activities, but the under-the-radar spring skiing season at Northstar California Resort is the hidden vacation gem that no one is talking about. Called the “shoulder season,” spring skiing typically begins in Mar. and runs through Apr. And, more times than not, you’ll be rewarded with sunny skies, mild temperatures and little-to-no lines to get onto the ski lifts or into the restaurants. It practically feels like you have this quintessential European-inspired mountain village to yourself. If you’re ready to plan an epic family-friendly spring break vacation, here’s everything you need to know about spring skiing at Northstar with kids, including where to eat and what to do on and off the mountain.

What You Need to Know about Northstar Ski Resort

family-friendly ski resort Northstar

Located on the northern side of Lake Tahoe, Northstar is its own, self-contained village. There are shops that sell weather-appropriate gear (no worries here if you forgot something critical for a day on the mountain) plus a variety of restaurants and cafes to dine from both day and night. And lest you forgot something important like toothpaste, there’s a convenience store for must-have items or other forgot-to-pack toiletries.

Family-friendly lodging at Northstar includes in-village options called Timber Creek Lodge, as well as the Constellation Residences at Northstar, plus 1-2 bedroom condominiums called the Ski Trails Condominiums and the Northstar Mountain Condos—the latter two (some that are ski-in and ski-out) are just a short walk away from the Village. All condos have fireplaces, balconies and kitchens—super convenient if you want to stay in and cook—clutch when everyone is too tired to move from a full day of skiing. Amenities also include an outdoor pool, hot tubs, game room—and during the summer months, tennis courts and kiddie splash pad are open.

Pro Tip: Instacart is available in the area—order groceries ahead of time and have them delivered to your condo when you arrive.

But what makes Northstar truly spectacular is that it is a family-friendly ski resort top-to-bottom. The vibe is super chill, and there are fun activities for kids of all ages and for all ski and snowboarding experience levels (13% of the trails are beginners, 60% are intermediate, and the 27% are advanced) thanks to 100 trails plus terrain parks for those daredevils.

Village dining options are sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters—from build-your-own burritos at Los Arcos to sweet, mochi cake donuts from Northstar’s newest food shop White Rabbit Ramen + Donuts—the entire resort is a stress-free environment that focuses on the fun (and yum!) of being in the mountains. And if you’re lucky—you’ll get an unexpected spring snowfall that adds even more charm to this mountain resort.

Insider Tip: Pick up a s’more’s kit from Frites (another good food spot for takeaway gourmet fries and craft brews located next to the skating rink) and hang out by a fire pit to roast marshmallows under the stars.

Good to Know: Thanks to Northstar’s free transportation service, getting around the Village and back to your condo is a cinch. Download the Northstar Village Transit App and you can request a ride to pick you up from your condo’s bus stop to take you to any other part of the resort. Another bonus for being here during the spring season? You never have to wait long for the pick-up to take you where you are going. The service does stop running after 6 p.m., though, so if you’re out to dinner, do plan on walking back to your condo in the dark (initiate those iPhone flashlights!), but there are pathways and the night walk makes for a fun adventure.

Skiing for the First Time at Northstar? Here’s What You Need to Know

Pro Tip: Download the EpicMix App—a free app that details everything you need to know about the life on the mountain—trail and lift status, interactive trail maps, dining reservations, where to find rentals, ski school reservations and more. It’s all the information you need about the mountain in the palm of your hand.

Good to Know: The EpicMix App is also used at other Vail Resorts located across the country—from Kirkwood and Heavenly (sister resorts located in Lake Tahoe) to East Coast ski resorts like Okemo and Stowe.

Pro Tip: There is a storage facility where you can check in your “hard gear” (skis, poles and board) next to the Big Springs Express Gondola that whisks you to up the mountain’s base. It is absolutely worth the small fee to store your gear here, so you don’t have to lug your poles, skis, or board around the Village and back to your condo.

We are not experienced skiers, and our kids had never skied before. We knew we wouldn’t be able to teach them ourselves. Our first order of business was signing them up for ski lessons. Another bonus we discovered about spring skiing? The snow is usually soft—meaning falls, and the like don’t hurt as much as when snow is more compact.

There are two types of lessons to choose from—group or private. Both can be booked in half-day or full day increments.

Group lessons have the advantage of being less expensive but there is also less individual instruction. You have to weigh the cost with how much you think your kid will pick up skill-wise. But because the spring season is quieter at the mountain, even if you sign up for a group lesson, your group will most likely not be full—so you get the savings with the extra personal instruction.

best ski resort Lake Tahoe

Since neither of my kids had never skied before, and they have a fairly big age gap (5 years), we opted for private lessons to maximize their time and experience. Our expectations were extremely low, but we received a photo from their amazing instructor Sonja mid-morning—both kids made it onto a ski lift and were officially skiing by lunch! Added bonus: At the end of the day, we were able to ski back down to the Village as a family.

Good to Know: When you book a lesson through the ski school, you receive a discounted lift ticket or discounted rentals—available as add-on options during checkout.

Skiing & Snowboarding at Northstar Resort

best family-friendly ski resort in Lake Tahoe

Kids aren’t the only ones that can use some instruction on their first few days. Booking a guide to take us around the mountain was by far one of the best experiences, as adults, we could have asked for. Rich, our knowledgable instructor, not only provided us with tips along the way, he helped us navigate the various trails for our experience level and showed us cool views around the mountain (like how to see Lake Tahoe from the top). To really maximize your time on the mountain, it’s well worth the investment—even for just a half-day.

Rich also led us through The Kids Adventure Zone (watch the video to see what I’m talking about)—a trail that is filled with wood-carved animals like bears, mountain lions and eagles—an eye-spy game of sorts in the middle of the mountain. And while our kids aren’t experienced enough to ski The Kids Adventure Zone (yet), it was sweet to see and gives us something to look forward to sharing with them when they do become more experienced skiers.

Where to Eat at Northstar Resort in Lake Tahoe

best ski resort Lake Tahoe

During the day, if you’re skiing and snowboarding, there are two dining options mid-mountain.

The Lodge at Big Springs: Located at the top of Big Springs Express Gondola and is a fantastic meeting point for families—especially if everyone is off doing their own thing. We coordinated with Sonja, our kid’s ski instructor, so that we could all have lunch together and hear all about their morning. Expect to find belly-filling fare like cheeseburgers, chicken fingers, fries, salads and wraps. Don’t miss the blondies by the cash register—perfect for stashing in your pocket for a mid-lift snack—we couldn’t get enough of them. There’s also a hydration station to refill those water bottles.

Insider Tip: Need to use the bathroom? It’s located downstairs but just to the left of the stairs is an elevator if you want to give your legs a much-needed break.

The Zephyr Lodge: Located at the top of The Tahoe Zephyr Express ski lift, takes a bit more effort to eat here if everyone in the group isn’t capable of skiing down. To get here, take the gondola at this lift (rather than the chair lift) and then walk 5-7 minutes through the snow, to the lodge—the floor-to-ceiling views of the Sierra Nevada range are totally worth the effort, but if your crew is hungry, we recommend sticking to the Lodge at Big Springs.

Rubicons Pizza: This family-friendly pizza spot offers crowd-pleasing menu items like Spinach Artichoke Dip and Crispy Calamari, and of course, pizza galore. With over ten variations to choose from, your best bet is to order a few different pies to share—or create your own if you’re feeling inspired. And don’t forget to order the “Out of the Oven Chocolate Chip Cookie”—you’ve certainly earned it.

Bourbon Pub: Award-winning Chef Michael Mina is at the helm of this casual, fun dining spot that delivers reinvented pub fare—think warm pub pretzels (order two for the table as everyone will want more), Prime Rib French Dips plus a full kid’s menu. And if you like spicy food, we can’t recommend the Tokyo Hot Chicken enough—and haven’t stopped thinking about since. PS: The dipping sauce is actually spicier than the chicken in case you think you’re cooling your chicken down before diving in.

Where to Eat in Truckee, CA

Truckee is a bustling town full of cafes, bars and restaurants just 15 minutes north of Northstar. If you want want to venture into town, we recommend dinner at Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats—located on the ground floor of the Truckee Hotel, established in 1837. And while this white linen-dining may feel like an elevated dining experience that isn’t kid-friendly, the overall mood is casual, fun and as kid-friendly as they come. There’s a kid’s menu with kid-favorites like cheeseburgers, pasta and pizza. And for the adults, I highly recommend the Crispy Brussels Sprouts, the Maine Day Boat Scallops, and if you have room, the Durham Ranch Hanger Steak Frites. If you don’t have a car, Ubers are readily available and cost around $40 to take you to town.

Gear to Borrow, Rent & Buy If Skiing for the First Time

best family-friendly ski resort Lake Tahoe
Winter Gear to Borrow: Tap into your friend and Facebook network and borrow all the soft gear that you can: ski pants, gloves, ski goggles and jackets.

Pro Tip: Spring skiing can be especially sunny—it’s a must to protect those eyes. Make sure to wear ski goggles (the reflection from the snow plus the sun can burn your eyes). If you can’t borrow goggles, the Village has a variety of options for kids and adults, starting at $20.

Winter Gear to Rent: Definitely rent your boots, skis and/or snowboards, poles and helmets from the resort—they will make sure everything is the right fit. Make sure to bring the socks you’ll be wearing while skiing to your boot fitting—this can dramatically change the fit of the boots (believe me—you don’t want to get your boots refit the next day because they are suddenly too tight).

Pro Tip: A company called Kit Lender is solving winter gear problems for those of us that haven’t been building our winter wardrobes. You can rent high-quality ski and snow gear (individual pieces or head-to-toe kits) for both kids and adults and have it shipped to your resort—for free. Simply wear the gear and then return it by dropping it in the mail once you’re done. Bonus: You avoid having to pack all that extra winter gear into suitcases and can avoid some of those airline baggage fees not to mention not having to do all that extra laundry upon your return.

Winter Gear to Buy: If you do end up buying winter gear, most of the shops on the mountain are having their winter sales to get rid of their seasonal stock—a great time to stock up on must-haves like ski goggles. Check out Big 5 (a lot of their winter gear was on sale in Mar. & Apr. as they made room for warm-weather clothes and accessories) or check out some of our favorite consignment shops to save a little cash in the process. I also found this kid’s ski jacket at Amazon for $50 (purchased slightly big to last at least one, if not two, more seasons). Socks and heat tech layers (Uniqlo is a favorite resource for these) are a good investment and can always be used throughout the year on other adventures.

Things to Do at Northstar That Isn’t Skiing or Snowboarding

Of course everyone may not want to be on the mountain all the time but there is plenty to do off the slopes. During the winter and into the spring (weather permitting), there’s Village Tubing, dog-sledding and snowshoeing. There is also an ice-skating rink set up in the middle of the Village for everyone to enjoy (either watching or participating). And if the temperatures does get too warm, all is not lost—the resort quickly swaps ice skates for roller skates. Feeling crafty? Head over to The Villager Candle Shop, where you can pour candles, make soap or paint pottery.

Good to Remember: Spring skiing at ski resorts does require a little flexibility and an open mind when it comes to the weather. Warmer temperatures mean activities, shops, some amenities and restaurants may close early or for the season. Look online or call ahead to confirm what’s open and if any of the hours have been modified.

What’s New at Northstar This Year

While the spring skiing season may officially be over for 2022 (we recommend making your reservations now to experience next year’s shoulder season spectacular), there’s a lot to look forward to next year. Vail Resorts are planning lots of upgrades and initiatives for the next ski season—investing in their employees and upgrading and adding lifts across their properties, including Northstar’s Comstock Lift that will become a high-speed lift, reducing wait times.

What You Need to Know About Epic Pass Whether You’re Skiing Once or All Season Long

There are a variety of Epic Pass options to choose from, which provide great value for skiers and riders. For those who only plan to be on the mountain a few times over the season, you can build your own pass. Choose from one-to-seven days and whether or not to you’ll need to include holiday access.

1. For those who will be regularly skiing or snowboarding at Vail Resort properties, the Epic Pass provides unlimited, unrestricted access to all 40 North American and Australian resorts, plus access to partner resorts, for $841.

2. New this year, Epic FlexPay offers Pass Holders a flexible monthly payment option with zero down payment, zero interest, no fees, and, for a limited time no payments until Sept.

3. Guests can now also pick from three levels of resort access. For those who only want access to local resorts like Seven Springs, Mount Sunapee and Afton Alps, prices start as low as $44 for an Epic 1-Day Pass.

4. Epic Pass Holders get 20% off on-mountain food, lodging, group lessons, rentals and more with Epic Mountain Rewards.

Good to Know: If you have summer in mind, Northstar has a summer suite of activities that you can experience, like a world-class Bike Park and Bike Academy; an 18-hole Golf Course; bocce ball, gem mining, bungee trampolines and mini-golf in the Village.

The Best Way to Get to Northstar California Resort from Los Angeles

While you can drive from Los Angeles—it will take about 8 hours from DTLA (barring traffic, accidents or surprise snowfalls), Northstar is conveniently located 50 minutes from the Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Alaska Airlines depart from LAX daily at 9 a.m., and the flight itself is under an hour (and at the time of publishing, some flights were as cheap as $49 one way)—which means you and your crew can be at the resort by lunchtime. You can rent a car or take a car service to the resort, which costs, on average, $85 per day or you can take a car service from the airport, which costs around $115 one way.

Intro Your Kids to a Chicago Hot Dog

Jeremy Keith via flickr

Love ’em or leave ’em, hot dogs are big in Chicago, and if your kids haven’t begged for one yet, they will soon. We love the on-the-go ease (no silverware!) and colorful condiments (kids get a pass where the sacrilege of using ketchup is concerned). Grab one at a legendary local hot dog spot and turn eating into an adventure.

6 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do with Kids in San Diego

The Best Free Online Activities for San Diego Kids

Free & Cheap Things to Do in San Diego with Kids

How lucky are we that the waterpark capital of the world (yes, world!) is just three hours from Chicago? No need to wait a whole year for summer to take a dip, this kid-tastic destination is hopping year-round. You won’t whiz down an outdoor water slide or bask in the sun on a lazy river, but the Wisconsin Dells still has plenty to offer. Here’s the scoop on where to stay, eat, play and be entertained on the cool weather vacay you know you need.

photo: Chula Vista Resort

STAY
You’ll feel like you’re in Mexico with palm trees towering over the water slides at Chula Vista Resort (2501 River Rd., 855-388-4782 or chulavistaresort.com), which we’re assuming is just fine with you. The water is heated to a cozy level, greenery surrounds you at every turn and indoor structures are modeled after Mayan temples. Relaxed yet? Chula Vista is one of the more toddler-friendly waterpark resorts in the Dells (its oversized wading pool has mini tipping buckets and gentle geysers). But, they also kept the more adventurous in mind with an uphill water roller coaster.

Passes to the waterpark are included in your night’s stay. For an extra fee you can play games in the onsite arcade and catch a flick in the 4-D movie theater. Chula Vista’s restaurants range from a chop house to a casual buffet breakfast spot, and there are also waterpark-side snacks. Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, you can pick from hotel rooms, suites, condos or villas that overlook the Wisconsin River.

On the other side of town, other lodging options with big-time indoor waterparks include Kalahari Resort, Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort and Great Wolf Lodge. Kalahari has a safari theme (tigers are known to camp out in the lobby in an enclosed area). Wilderness Hotel has a massive indoor amusement park with go-karting, laser tag and bumper boats. And Great Wolf Lodge caters to tiny swimmers with a four-story waterpark treehouse and lily pad walk, plus a kids’ spa.

photo: MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge

PLAY
Make like Harry Potter and grab a magic wand at MagiQuest (1400 Great Wolf Dr., 608-253-2222 or greatwolf.com). The indoor role-playing adventure challenges you to navigate a realistic-looking enchanted kingdom, unlocking clues and fighting virtual dragons along the way. While best suited for kids ages five and up (there is some strategic thinking involved), younger kids will appreciate the visual effects, which include animated fairies and engaging touch screens.

If fantasy and sci-fi is your thing, head deeper into downtown Dells for Wizard Quest (105 Broadway, 608-254-2184 or wizardquest.com), a digitally-interactive game played in a real-life massive labyrinth; it was all developed by a local Dells family. Your mission is to answer riddles and navigate secret passages to unlock imprisoned wizards, while staying on your guard for the minions that will try to stop you in your tracks.

photo: Knuckleheads

Give your body a rest and exercise your brain by heading to a whopper of an amusement park: Knuckleheads (150 Gasser Rd., 608-254-7332 or knuckleheadspark.com). You’ll burn off energy on the indoor ropes course, bumper cars, bowling lanes, 4-D roller coaster and other whirly-twirlies. Their indoor trampoline park has wall-to-wall trampolines. If your tiny bouncer isn’t ready for high-intensity jumping, check out the “jumping pillow,” where they can hop in a more contained environment.

How about spending the day learning how stuff works? Get those noggins turning with science and robot fun at Tommy Bartlett’s Exploratory (560 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy., 608-254-2525 or tommybartlett.com). It’s the only place on earth where you can see and jump right into an authentic Russian Space Station MIR core module (this was the operational nerve center for space explorers living on the MIR Space Station). Another highlight is the Van De Graaff Generator – Bridge of Fire exhibit, a static electricity generator built by Dr. Robert J. Van de Graaff in the early 1940s. Your hair will stand on end as you pick up electro charges from the generator, which has the power of a thundercloud! Daredevils big and small can also feel the thrill of riding a bicycle across a tightrope.

Cap off the fun with a photo memory at Old Abe’s Old Time Portraits (217 Broadway Ave., 608-254-5663, oldabes.com). This is your family’s chance to step back in time and capture an image of what you would’ve looked like as visitors aboard the Titanic, as Wild West cowboys and gals or immigrants to 1870’s Wisconsin. A large variety of old-time sets and a huge selection of costumes make it easier than ever to time travel when the DeLorean is in the shop.

photo: Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty

EAT
It’s impossible to miss Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty (411 Highway 13, 608-254-8717 or dellspaulbunyans.com) with huge statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox standing tall to greet you at the entrance of this Dells cult classic. You’ll find meals fit for a lumberjack with all-you-can-eat, family-style feasts served in a cabin that would look right at home in the Wisconsin northwoods. If you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, be sure to at least stop in for sugar donuts and a trip to their gift shop, where you can buy wilderness-inspired loot (think slingshots and fur caps). In order to prep for the busy summer season and spend time with family, Paul Bunyan’s is closed mid-October through March, so it’s only an option if you plan a late winter/early spring getaway.

photo: Buffalo Phil’s

You’ve probably noshed at a restaurant where food arrives at your table via mini train, but there’s nothing quite like Buffalo Phil’s (150 Gasser Rd., 608-254-7300 or buffalophilsgrille.com). Mini locomotives circle overhead and table-side train service chugs over Lil’ Buckaroo meals (pasta, chicken, burgers), plus surprise toys to play with while you wait. If there’s a line to snag a table to experience this train mania, amuse yourself on the ride-on horse or sit atop the taxidermy buffalo for a photo opp. Buffalo Phil’s is attached to Knuckleheads, and you could easily spend an afternoon bopping between the two.

Head to the old-school House of Embers (935 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy., 608-253-6411, houseofembers.com) for a Wisconsin Supper Club style feast. BBQ baby back ribs are the house specialty, but if you happen to be visiting on a Friday, the unbeatable Friday night fish fry is a don’t-miss.

The Dells has other dining options that are less overtly kid-focused and may appeal to more gourmet tastes. On the downtown strip, MACS (208 Broadway, 608-678-2300 or macandcheeseshop.com) serves inventive takes on mac ‘n’ cheese, including Popeye Mac (provolone, mozzarella, spinach, sauteed onions and mushrooms) and Chicken Bacon Ranch Mac (cheddar, mozzarella, chicken, bacon, ranch).

EXPLORE
When the weather is right, hit the outdoors and trade water slides for ski slopes at Cascade Mountain (W10441 Cascade Mountain Rd., Portage, 608-742-5588 or cascademountain.com), located 15 minutes from downtown Dells. Kids ages 4-10 can participate in the Cascade Kids program to learn the snowy ropes of snowboarding and skiing. You’ll also find a tubing hill that measures 900 feet long, with a surface lift that zips you right back up for more downhill fun. Tubes are provided and no experience is required.

Take your pick between 15 downhill runs that satisfy the needs of beginners to more seasoned black diamond riders at Christmas Mountain Village (S944 Christmas Mountain Rd., 608-253-1000 or christmasmountainvillage.com). Their trails are perfect for cross-country skiing and there’s also tubing, for more slippery fun.

Spend an evening or afternoon bowling at Chalet Lanes (740 Elm St., 608-254-8727, chaletlanes.com), a family fun center that features awesome rock & bowl lanes complete with colorful lights, a mega sound system and even a fog machine. Automatic scoring and bumper bowling make this an easy pick for family fun.

photo: Palace Theater courtesy of Michelle J. via Yelp

Introduce your kids to the magic of live performances at Palace Theater (564 Wisconsin Dells Parkway South, 608-253-4000 or dellspalace.com). Its wholesome entertainment focuses on Broadway shows and Disney classics.

For more information on the area’s hotspots, check with the Wisconsin Dells Visitors Bureau online at wisdells.com.

10 Amazing Adventures You Can Only Find in Wisconsin Dells

The internet has some serious questions about the new Frozen 2 trailer. While we all expected to see Anna, Elsa and Olaf again, but there are a few new faces in Disney’s first look at the highly-anticipated sequel—and Twitter has thoughts.

Here’s what we know so far: in addition to the return of Idina Menzel as Elsa and Kristen Bell as Anna, two more actors have joined the cast, namely Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Sterling K. Brown (The Good Place)—but in undisclosed roles. With the new teaser, there’s speculation that Wood might be the voice of the tunic-wearing girl in a forest scene near the end of the trailer. Take a look for yourself:

The scene also features a mystery man (or boy, it’s hard to tell) who right now, we know absolutely nothing about, other than that he goes flying out of a massive leaf pile and launches into the air. But how? Is the mysterious redhead responsible? So. Many. Questions.

While there are no confirmations as of yet, one theory is that the mystery characters are actually Elsa and Anna’s parents—in a flashback, of course. Another theory proposes that the new female character is none other than Anna and Elsa’s sister.

Other theories include that perhaps Elsa is one of a legion of seasonally-powered princesses.

But perhaps there’s something even more here?

https://twitter.com/ksupercorp1821/status/1095724034233294849

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see—and keep our crazy theories coming.

Frozen 2 is set for a Nov. 22, 2019 release nationwide.

For the very best in both winter and summer getaways, we scoured the Cascades, scaled the Rockies, swung by the Ozarks and beheld the Blue Ridge Mountains, all to bring you mountain towns across the country that offer year-round adventure. So decide whether to pack up your snow boots or the swimsuits and enjoy! See them all below.

1. Jackson Hole, WY

Owen and Aki via Flickr

Why we love winter: A bit of the Wild West has been preserved in Wyoming’s Jackson Hole, where sport and culture roam free amidst the regal Rocky Mountains. Snow bunnies have the options of Snow King Mountain, Grand Targhee, or Jackson Hole Mountain Resorts for powder and views as epic as they get. At the latter, you won’t want to miss a ride on “Big Red,” the nickname for Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Aerial Tram, which ascends over 4,000 feet! And there’s plenty of fun to be had off the mountains as well—try out a sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge’s elk herd!

Why we love summer: The National Museum of Wildlife Art will fascinate the whole family, with plenty for the kids to make and explore, like its incredible outdoor Sculpture Trail. With Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks both within reach, you can take day tours while Jackson is your base camp. And when you’re exploring Jackson Town Square, stop under one of its Antler Arches for a popular photo opp. Each arch has over 10,000 pounds of hand-woven antlers, many comprised from those shed naturally in the National Elk Refuge and collected annually by the Jackson Hole Boy Scouts.

2. Leavenworth, WA

Brad Granger via Flickr

Why we love winter: Wondering what you get when you cross a gingerbread village with a snow globe? The answer would look a lot like Bavarian-themed Leavenworth in the Washington Cascades, about two hours east of Seattle. There’s a ton of fun to be had in the snow, from hopping on a sleigh, dog sled, or snowmobile to hitting the slopes at Mission Ridge or Stevens Pass, both about 30 miles away. Right in town, you’ll find Leavenworth Winter Sports Club with a tubing park, ski jumps, and downhill as well as cross-country trails.

Why we love summer: And there’s just as much to do in the summer! If it’s all about the bike for your family, Leavenworth’s cycling community will welcome you with plenty of dirt trails as well as Enchantment Park’s new Bike Pump Park (it boasts the only paved track on the West Coast). There’s also stand up paddle boarding on Lake Wenatchee, rafting or kayaking the Wenatchee River, nearby Blackbird Island’s swimming beach, horseback riding, climbing, year-found festivals—the Leavenworth list goes on and on!

3. Boulder, CO

Mark Doliner via Flickr

Why we love winter: In downtown Boulder, ice-skate and sip hot cocoa next to the Dushanbe Tea House, a gift from Boulder’s sister city in Tajikistan. Hit the local slopes at Eldora Mountain Resort just up the canyon in Nederland—its layout is family friendly and ski runs aren’t as packed as many of Colorado’s larger ski areas. And you don’t have to wait until summer to get your bike on. Valmont Bike Park is open year-round to the public and accommodates a full range of levels.

Why we love summer: Year-round, Boulder is home to remarkable public facilities loved by locals and visitors alike, such as the new interactive Grillo Center Labyrinth outside the downtown public library as well as Arapahoe Ridge Park, with real boulders the kids can climb. You’ll easily stumble upon a splash park (there is also three indoor options open year round), and the kids will love tubing down Boulder Creek. And there are over 150 miles of Open Space trails to explore. Well-known routes kick off at Chautauqua Park and its landmark Flatirons.

4. Asheville, NC

Brett Kiger via Flickr

Why we love winter: What used to be a crossroads where you might have seen Davy Crockett wander by is now a Great Smoky Mountains gem that will delight the whole family. The craft beer scene is huge here, so be sure to warm up at one of their family-friendly breweries or trendy rooftop fireplace locales. Experiencing the historic and gilded Biltmore during Christmas time is always a seasonal delight, and sports fans take note: this February, Asheville hosts the 2018 Fed Cup, the largest annual women’s team tennis tournament in the world!

Why we love summer: Take a hike! Several trails with amazing views are nearby, including Skyline Trail, made famous in The Last of the Mohicans, and which has reopened after a decade. When it’s time to cool off in the summer, definitely check out Asheville Pizza and Brewing, where you can catch an outdoor movie and hit up their vintage arcade.  Beginning in May, be sure to check out Dale Chihuly’s large-scale glass sculptures in the Biltmore’s historic gardens. In conjunction, it will be the “Summer of Glass” for Asheville this year, with local glass artists and studios joining the celebration.

5. Nevada City, CA

James Gaither via Flickr

Why we love winter: Downtown Nevada City is a classic California mining town in the heart of Gold Country and offers up loads of activities for kids. In town, a Victorian Christmas is hosted in December, followed by the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in January with kid-directed ecology-based movies in the theater. And, of course, renowned ski resorts are well within reach. Donner Summit is closest, but you can also get to Lake Tahoe’s north shore in about an hour.

Why we love summer: The Yuba River is downright magical, with scores of hiking trails, swimming holes, amazing rock formations, and secret beaches (on the authority of one local mama). Scotts Flat Lake offers up sailing and kayaking opportunities. And did we mention hiking trails? Many are just five minutes from downtown, or along Deer Creek, the 34-mile stream that runs from the Tahoe National forest right through town. If you visit in July, you can check out both the Children’s Festival, with sweet fairytale fare for kids (think: queens, trolls, knights), as well as the Summer Nights street festival.

6. Jim Thorpe, PA

Khürt Williams via Flickr

Why we love winter: How about a mountain getaway within reach of Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore? If you’re heading to this Victorian town in the Lehigh Gorge in mid-February, the Jim Thorpe Winterfest will delight with loads of family Pocono fun, including train rides (the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is a historic attraction), and a Mug Walk, where you can fill up on goodies at local shops. If you miss the Mug Walk, Rainbows End can satisfy sweet teeth year round.

Why we love summer: Fancy a ghost tour? Jim Thorpe is the place. On Summer Saturday nights beginning in mid-May, meet outside the Inn at Jim Thorpe at 8:45 p.m. to hear the local legends when it comes to hauntings and folklore. Reservations encouraged. And history buffs are in luck—2018 marks the Mauch Chunk Bicentennial. And if Mauch Chunk doesn’t ring a bell, the museum will fill you in!

7. Cook County, MN

Jason Carpenter via Flickr

Why we love winter: Mountains in Minnesota? You bet. In Cook County, you’ll find the Lutsen Mountains as well as the largest ski resort in the Midwest with 95 runs and the most snow days in the region. Check out the harbor town of Grand Marias for a packed annual calendar of events, like open skating at the Cook County Community Center and “Friday Night Reels.” Hop on a traditional dog sled or a snowmobile for a ride through the powdered forests of a spot said to remind you of Narnia. Keep your eye out for major natural ice sculptures along the way, and don't forget the Northern Lights!

Why we love summer: Two words: Lake Superior! The largest fresh-water lake in the world awaits, making Cook County a true year-round playground for beach days and water sports. There’s also the Grand Portage waterfall to see (Minnesota’s highest) and Eagle Mountain to climb (Minnesota’s tallest). Minnesota’s oldest art colony is also in Grand Marias, and budding artists can even take a class in traditional Northern crafts at North House Folk School.

8. Red Lodge, MT

Frank DiBona via Flickr

Why we love winter: Red Lodge’s historic downtown charms with that funky feel of the old west. For snow sports, a terrain park offers free events all season. Learn about Red Lodge’s rodeo and ranching history at the Carbon County Historical Museum. If you’re in town on Mar. 3, be sure to check out the Winter Carnival for the typical carnival fare like music and costumes (this year’s theme is Superheroes!) and the not so typical, like “feats of daring,” a torchlight parade, and fireworks right over the mountain. As for grub, Bogarts is a staple.

Why we love summer: Known as “the base camp to the Beartooths,” Red Lodge is nestled in the midst of Montana’s highest peaks, offering all the beauty of a scenic mountain town without crowds or pretension. From riding a bike to a horse to a whitewater raft to an ATV, you can do it all from Red Lodge. If you have any mountain climbers in the family, develop some vertical skills. Beartooth Mountain Guides, for instance, will supply all the gear for basic and intermediate “rock craft.” If hiking is more your speed, there are tons of options from the top of Beartooth Pass. Stay in town for the skate park, pig races (yes, you read that right) every summer weekend at the Bear Creek Saloon, and a Fourth of July rodeo. Finally, if Yellowstone is on the list, just head southwest on the famed Beartooth Highway, which ends at Red Lodge.

9. Santa Fe, NM

Granger Meador via Flickr

Why we love winter: Thanks to its high elevation and over 300 days of sunshine, year-round fun in the sun awaits. Be sure to include the view from 12,000 feet at the Santa Fe Ski Basin, 20 miles up the mountain. A major winter highlight is Christmas Eve on Canyon Road in the historic Gallery District, lit with luminaries and warmed with Mexican hot chocolate and churros. Famous for its art scene, make time for the Museum of International Folk Art, which comes highly recommended for kids.

Why we love summer: In the summer the Santa Fe Ski Basin is a hiking trail paradise, rich in Aspens and wildflowers, which peak in July and August. River rafters can take on the Rio Grande, and you’ll want to visit a local pueblo to better understand 600 years of local history as well as contemporary customs. For a family-friendly lunch spot, Cowgirl has a big back lot just for the kids. But if the regional flavors—a one-of-a-kind combination of native American, Spanish, Mexican and pueblo food—strike your fancy, consider a family cooking class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking. In August, don't miss the Santa Fe Summer Indian Market, the largest Native arts festival in the world.

10. Ellicottville, NY

Joy Banerjee via Flickr

Why we love winter: Ellicottville, nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, is also known as the “Aspen of the East,” with several slopes within reach for skiing and snowboarding, including the state’s biggest, Holimot. Nearby Holiday Valley Lodge has awesome night skiing (there’s a mountain coaster!) and a 20+ lane tubing park. If you’re in town for the holidays, Christmas in Ellicottville is a must as the town decks its halls, while the Ellicottville Winter Carnival runs Mar. 9-11 this year.

Why we love summer: Outdoor enthusiasts can take their pick of mountain biking, hiking, fishing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and golf, too. The village has shops and restaurants to explore. And summertime is chock-full of festivals, with the Holiday Valley Mudslide and Summer Music Festival kicking off in June and A Taste of Ellicottville in August for any foodie families. Speaking of, don’t miss some samples from Ellicottville Cheese Company either!

Why we love winter: Craft beer is also making a big name for itself in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Star Hill Pilot Brewery and Side Stage, for one, regularly hosts live music and food trucks. The kids will love ice-skating at Elmwood Park downtown. And “Dickens of a Christmas,” complete with a winter festival, Christmas Parade, and pet costume contest, goes off each December!

Why we love summer: McAfee’s Knob is the Appalachian Trail’s most photographed point and is right in Roanoke County, making a hike up Catawba Mountain well worth that postcard view. The summer also hosts a slew of festivals, with FloydFest at the end of July a must for music lovers. Locals also head to Smith Mountain Lake for wakeboarding, horseback riding, and good old-fashioned beaching.

12. McCall, ID

Why we love winter: Brundage Resort is nearby (and topped our list of The BEST Ski Resorts for Beginners by the way), as is gorgeous Payette Lake with bordering Ponderosa State Park for lake-view Nordic trails. Meanwhile, Little Ski Hill has night skiing and Tamarack Resort nearly 3,000 feet of vertical. McCall’s Winter Carnival is so amazing they post the dates three years in advance for the 60,000 visitors who flock every year for two weeks of festivities, including Mardi Gras Parades, ice sculptures, snowbike races, and Monster Dog Pull.

Why we love summer: Payette Lake turns into a summer wonderland for just about any water sport you can think of, from sailing to jet skiing, making it a hot tourist spot. The area also has 300 other alpine lakes to visit! And the Payette River Basin Water Trails make it easy for recreational travel by canoe, kayak, or raft (Idaho is the “Whitewater State” after all).

13. Eureka Springs, AR

Chris Pencis via Flickr

Why we love winter: Eureka Springs, a Victorian Village and oasis in the Ozarks, is a mid-America charmer. Accommodations of every variety abound, including an impressive selection of treehouses! Challenge the kids to find a statue of Humpty Dumpty sitting atop one of its walls, too.

Why we love summer: Take it all in from above with a zip line tour right through the Ozark Mountain forest or head underground and explore Onyx Cave, which has been attracting tourists to Eureka Springs since 1891. There’s also a wildlife refuge to check out and 100+ shops and galleries to explore downtown. They put on a pretty classic Fourth of July parade, too.

14. Midway, UT

Midway Ice Castles

Why we love winter: Utah is certainly a skiing or snowboarding family’s delight. Midway in the Heber Valley is only 20 miles south of Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Ski Resort’s epic slopes and should absolutely be on your radar. In winter, take a warm dip in Homestead Crater, where it’s always 94 degrees! Touring the factory at Heber Valley Artisan Cheese or selecting a shake from some 60 flavors at Home on the Train make for tasty indoor treats, too. And be sure to plan ahead to book a ticket to Midway’s Ice Castles! Even Queen Elsa would be most impressed.

Why we love summer: Settled by the Swiss, you too may be reminded of the Alps in this verdant landscape, where fly-fishing and hiking abound (we recommend Cascade Springs in Wasatch Mountain State Park). The kids will love the historical train ride (the only one in the state)—be sure to check the calendar to see if your trip aligns with Star Wars or Princess and Pirate Train days.

No Snow Needed: Why Tahoe is the Perfect Destination Year-Round

If you’ve ever dreamt of a European-style island vacation with your little ones (you know, the kind of vacation where you sit at sunny outdoor cafes, wearing striped tops and big sunglasses looking tr´es chic watching the water) but then have a major reality check when it comes to 1. cost and 2. flight time in the air (14 hours say what?!) then do I have news for you. You can get all of that and more (including no jet lag) by hopping on a one-hour boat ride to the darling island of Catalina. Scroll through to see what this piece of paradise, just 22 miles off the coast of California, has in store for you and your kids (yes, even in the winter) and then get ready to put it at the top of your vacation bucket list.

Bon Voyage!

Andie Huber

To get to the island, take the Catalina Express, an hour-long passenger ferry, from one of three ports on the mainland. We left from Long Beach but you can also depart from San Pedro or Dana Point. Once we had our tickets, we wandered outside, people watched, climbed the stairs (burn some of that energy kids) and eventually got in line. Even though we ended up at the back of the queue, we still scored a window seat. Once the bar opened, the kids got some snacks and we got a couple Bloody Mary’s. Our ride was smooth sailing the whole time which gave us the opportunity to walk around the boat a little bit and watch the waves that the boat made as it cut through the water. There is an open deck with loads of seating (much colder than the interior section) but was fun to check out before returning inside. So far so good.

Island Time

Andie Huber

Once we docked in Avalon, we grabbed our bags and headed to the hotel. We opted to walk, rather than take a cab, and we were happy we did. It gave us a chance to walk along the waterfront and take in all the cute shops and restaurants along the way. The town feels like an Italian seaside resort complete with gravity-defying homes, built into the mountainside in a half circle behind the harbor. You can literally walk anywhere within the town (and much of it is closed to traffic, including the preferred mode of transportation, golf carts).

Hotel Portofino

Andie Huber

Our suite in the Hotel Portofino was exactly what our family of four needed, complete with king bed, a pull-out sleeper-sofa for the kids to share, a huge bathroom with bathtub and separate shower and a balcony where we got to watch the boats in the harbor and the pretty pink sunrises in the mornings.

Right now, the Catalina Island Express and participating hotels, like the Hotel Portofino, are running a "Best of Winter" special through the end of March. You can snag transportation to the island and stays up to 60 percent off compared to the summer season, making it a perfect time to experience the island for yourself (or for when the kids are on spring break!).

Lounging

Andie Huber

The hotel offers complimentary breakfast with croissants, muffins, juice, yogurt, cereal, fruit and coffee and we took full advantage of their outdoor seating every morning, filling our bellies before starting the day’s activities. The staff was super friendly and there was a bonus sun-deck that we got to lounge on in the late afternoon.

What to Do

Andie Huber

Surprisingly, there is so much to do on this barely inhabited island that we didn’t have time to do it all (#nextvisit). Some highlights included: a fun bus tour of the island that climbed into the hills surrounding the town of Avalon, playing mini-golf in Town Plaza, taking the helm at the pirate ship playground, playing a couple rounds of ice hockey in the arcade, collecting rocks while we walked along the sandy shoreline and taking in a glass bottom boat tour.

Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Andie Huber

A highlight of our trip was definitely taking a trip on Catalina Island’s Glass Bottom Boat Voyage. Docked at the pier, conveniently located in the middle of town, the boat has ample seating with soft cushions and open views to the town and the water in addition to the anticipated looking wells that run in the middle of the boat. Everyone gets an unobstructed view of the glass bottom. The knowledgeable guide took us out of the harbor and into Lover’s Cove and I was afraid I’d end up just daydreaming the entire ride (not necessarily a bad thing) but when we got to the location, we saw schools and schools of fish of all sizes that live in the kelp-y forest just offshore. We were shocked by the sheer number of fish that swam under the boat and quite honestly it was near impossible to keep your eyes off the glass bottom as there was always something new to see.

So Many Fish!

It was hard to take your eyes off the bottom! You never knew what you were going to see!

Avalon Scenic Bus Tour

Andie Huber

For a quick tour of the town’s highlights and surrounding area, take the 50-minute bus ride that allows kids of all ages (some tours have age requirements). The bus, much to our disbelief, made it up and down the mountainside, around hairpin turns all while listening to the loveliest tour guide at the helm, who not only knew the island’s history, she also seemed to know every person we passed. Get your camera ready for some breathtaking photo-ops at the top.

Dreamy Catalina

Andie Huber

On our next trip (cause we are already planning it), we'll rent a golf cart to drive around to find some of the wild buffalo that roams the island, try the zip-line adventure, hang out at Descanso Beach (it was just a tidge too cold on our last day, otherwise we would have gone) and try one of the hikes that draw day-trippers.

Where to Eat

Andie Huber

There are a ton of places to choose from in this small town that are sure to delight even the pickiest eaters. First up? Blue Water Grill.

Blue Water Grill

Andie Huber

Voted "Best on Catalina" this family-friendly restaurant with to-die-for views of the harbor features sustainable seafood and a varied menu where everyone will find something they want to eat. While we waited for our food to arrive, we watched the boats come into the harbor and dock, and we saw little fish hanging out, below the deck, just offshore. Remember that moment of tranquil sea-side dining you'd always dreamed about? This is where it happens. The food was fantastic, I highly recommend the Mai-Tai and the kid's meals showed up in clever bento boxes that made their food a delightful treat.

Ben's Bakery

Andie Huber

For a low-stress, grab-and-go type establishment, you want to find Ben's. Located in the Shops at Atwater (an indoor mall-type space that would be a good reprieve during hot summer days), they had a vast range of options including poke bowls, sandwiches, bagels, croissants, coffee, treats and more. The convenience factor is A+ (as is the food) and we'll definitely stop here for picnic essentials the next time we are in town.

Other Highlights:

Andie Huber

  1. Stop for some ice cream at Lloyd's and watch the crazy salt water taffy maker spin some delicious sweet stuff.
  2. Antonio's Pizza (located next to Blue Water Grill on the harbor) is a throw-back pizza joint complete with complimentary peanuts that you can shell and chuck on the floor. An easy spot to hang after a long day of sightseeing and running around the town.

Things to Know Before You Go:

Andie Huber

  1. Drinking water, even from restaurants, is really only available through plastic bottles. Thankfully the cost to purchase them isn't super-inflated considering everything has to be brought from the mainland but maybe stash a couple in your bag so you always have one handy.
  2. Want to get to the island faster than a ferry? Take a helicopter and you'll take off and land in paradise in just 15 minutes.
  3. We can safely say that Catalina is great any time of year but definitely take advantage of it being less crowded during the winter. Catalina Express is offering a "Best of Winter" packages for the ferry and hotels with savings up to 60 percent-off for mid-week stays. Check the website for more details to take advantage of this special rate that is available through March 2018.

One Family’s Best Travel Tips

Tech-y Travel Tips

Even though getting to the Down Under can be an adventure unto itself, lame vacations don’t exist in Australia. Whether your family is looking for pristine beaches, cosmopolitan cities or magnificent natural scenery, you’re sure to find your perfect vacation destination Down Under.

Indeed, the main challenge for rookie visitors to Australia is choosing where to visit first! Since Australia is so vast, you need to plan ahead so you don’t waste all your vacation time in transit. Below, we’ll help you on your quest by sharing 10 of the top family holiday destinations in Australia.

Sydney

Let’s start with the obvious tourist draw: Sydney. Located along Australia’s southeastern coast, Sydney is the country’s most populated and most visited city.

It’s almost a requirement for tourists to take a ferry boat ride by the Australia’s two iconic structures: the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Once you’ve got that checked off your bucket list, get your “beach bum” on at Bondi Beach. Be sure to check online before your visit to see if there are any special Bondi Beach activities going on.

Just a few other exceptional attractions you should put in your Sydney travel itinerary include Royal Botanic Garden, the Queen Victoria Building, and Watson’s Bay. If your family loves the thrill of exploring an ultra-modern cosmopolitan city, then Sydney is your place to be.

Cairns

Sometimes called the “Gateway to the Barrier Reef,” the Queensland city Cairns is a popular tourist draw for people who love exploring Australia’s natural scenery. Thanks to the large inflow of tourists over the years, Cairns has built up an exceptional travel infrastructure complete with restaurants, cafés and resorts.

You should have no problem finding many family accommodation in Cairns nowadays. The city of Cairns itself has a very relaxed vibe and is often used as a jumping off point for other attractions in the region.

As for things to do in Cairns with your kids, definitely take a walk on Esplanade Boardwalk, book a ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, and explore the Cairns Botanical Garden. In addition to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is a great home base to explore areas like the Daintree National Park, Port Douglas, and Cape Tribulation.

Tourists flood into Cairns between June and August to take advantage of the city’s milder winter temperatures. If you’re traveling to Cairns during the summer season, you might not have to face huge crowds, but you will have to contend with increased humidity.

Hobart

Hobart is the largest city in the southeastern island state of Tasmania. Originally a penal colony, Hobart is now a huge tourist draw for artists, tourists, and even Antarctic adventurers. Fun fact: this city on the Derwent River is one of only five gateways to Antarctica.

Although Hobart may seem more like an adult tourist draw with its history and architecture, let’s go over what to do in Hobart with kids. First off, consider a visit to interesting historic areas like the Penitentiary Chapel, the Australian Army Museum Tasmania, and the old suburb known as Battery Point. If your child isn’t into history, maybe she/he will listen to a professional guide’s ghoulish tales on one of the nightly ghost tours offered in the city.

Besides the fascinating history of in Hobart, there are plenty of natural attractions here like Mount Wellington and Mount Nelson to explore. By the way, on good weather nights you could get a clear view of the Aurora Australis in the sky.

The Gold Coast

Located on Australia’s southeastern corner, the Gold Coast is the perfect location for sand, surf and sun. This city is split into four main districts, but the two most tourists stay in are called Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

There’s a total of 32 miles of beaches on Gold Coast and numerous opportunities to teach your kids to surf. Besides surfing, you could take part in a kayaking excursion, head out for some whale watching, or, if you feel up to it, go on a jet skiing adventure.

This Queensland city is also home to tons of exciting “worlds” like Sea World, DreamWorld, and Warner Brothers Movie World. Unfortunately there’s no Walt Disney World in Gold Coast yet…but you probably won’t miss Mickey Mouse in this fabulous city.

Kangaroo Island

No visit to Australia is complete without visiting a few kangaroos. And what better place to visit Australia’s favorite animal than on Kangaroo Island? Yes, there is actually a place named Kangaroo Island (abbreviated KI) in Australia! At 100 miles wide and 30 miles across, KI is the third-largest island in Australia.

The easiest way to get to this island is by taking a boat from the southern city of Adelaide. Besides checking out kangaroos at the KI Wildlife Park, you and your family will enjoy visiting the impressive rock formations at Flinders Chase National Park, the caves in Kelly Hill Conservation Park, and the seals at Seal Bay. Some of the other unique fauna you’re bound to encounter on KI include koalas, penguins, and platypi.

Once you’re done exploring all that KI has to offer, you can head back to the Australian mainland to explore Adelaide’s top sites like the Glenelg Beach, the German Hahndorf settlement and the Adelaide Zoo.

Brisbane

Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city and the capital of Queensland. The best way for tourists to get the most out of their Brisbane experience is to take CityCat ferries to all their destinations. There are at least 21 CityCats on the Brisbane River that can take you anywhere you need to go in the city. This is also a great way to orient yourself to the city without having to worry about driving around.

One of the major draws in Brisbane for kids is meet and greet koalas at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Museums that are bound to entertain kids include the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the Queensland Maritime Museum, and the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre.

For families who aren’t afraid of heights, plan to scale the 941-foot summit of Mount Coot-tha and/or the Story Bridge for exceptional views of bustling Brisbane.

Canberra

There’s far more to Canberra than snooty politicians, government buildings, and historical monuments. First-time visitors are often surprised just how much green space is in Australia’s capital city. Nature lovers have many hiking paths to choose from all around Canberra’s bushlands.

For the best aerial views of the city, climb to the top of the Black Mountain Tower or the summits of Mount Pleasant and Mount Ainslie. As you descend from your climb, you must want to visit Canberra’s highly respected Australian War Memorial. As you stroll through the Parliamentary Triangle, take a few pics by Australia’s most important buildings like the Parliament House, the High Court, and the National Library.

You’ll also find the kid-friendly Questacon, an interactive museum dedicated to the sciences, in Parliamentary Square. If you can, try to visit Canberra during the Floriade Flower Festival between September and October.

Launceston

While it’s not as big as Hobart, Launceston deserves a spot on every serious traveler’s bucket list. Founded in 1805 by Tamar River, this city has plenty of charm and family-friendly attractions for an exceptional Tasmanian adventure.

The most noteworthy draw here is the lovely Cataract Gorge Reserve. Another wonderful nature reserve in the area is called the Tamar Island Wetlands. Launceston is also home to the charming Tasmania Zoo and the impressive Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

Finally, anyone in your family interested in vintage cars will love a stop at the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Even if you haven’t heard the name “Uluru” before, you’ve probably seen this massive stone in Australian tourist booklets. Uluru, which means “Earth Mother” in the indigenous Anangu tribe’s language, is one of the most striking rock formations on the planet.

Scientists say this monolith has a height of at least 216 miles, extends into the ground 1.5 miles, and has a circumference of 6 miles.

If you have any budding geologists or anthropologists in your family, you can’t skip a visit to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Just so you know, this park in central Australia is split into the Ayers Rock Airport area, the actual park, and the Yulara resort area.

Besides Uluru, guests also get to visit Kata Tjuta, which are about 35 rock domes nearby. Today there are many tour options available for you to get the most out of your visit no matter your level of fitness. If you don’t feel up to hiking, then book a Segway, bike, and camel tour of the region.

Ballarat

About 60 miles northwest of Melbourne, Ballarat is a quaint city in Australia’s Victoria region. The key attraction here for families is the recreated town of Sovereign Hill.

As you walk through Sovereign Hill, you’ll feel as if you just walked into a time machine and came out in 1850s during the height of the Ballarat’s gold rush. Everyone visiting Sovereign Hill can’t afford to miss the 80-minute spectacular “Blood on the Southern Cross” that tells the story of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion.

You can learn even more about Ballarat’s history with the gold mining at the Gold Museum. A few other interesting spots for kids to visit include the Kryal Castle, the Ballarat Tramway Museum, and the Ballarat Wildlife Park.

Around 8.7 million international tourists visit Australia every year. Now it’s time for your family to join the millions who visit this enchanting land every year. Hopefully this list gave you a few great family holiday ideas to keep everyone in your tour group satisfied.

Look over this list again and do a bit of research before booking your flight to the Land Down Under. No matter where you choose to go, however, take this piece of advice to heart: bring extra sunscreen. Trust us, you’re going to need it.
