Being a working mom isn’t easy, even if you happen to be a Sports Illustrated model. When you’re a nursing mom, it can be hard to keep up with pumping while at work. But for Mara Martin, strutting down the catwalk with a pump just wasn’t an option, so the thirty-year-old model simply breastfed while walking the runway!
The Sports Illustrated model made quite the standout statement about breastfeeding and working moms as she did her thing. It all went down in Miami at the SI Swim Search show, where Martin scored a spot as a finalist in the open casting call. The show was all part of Miami Swim Week.
Unlike its iconic swimsuit issue, Sports Illustrated’s Swim Search wasn’t just for supermodels with Barbie-esque measurements. Sports Illustrated editor MJ Day told CBS4 Miami that SI wants to highlight women of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities, noting, “That’s the energy that they brand has always been about. It’s more important than ever that we scream it from the rooftop. It’s a strange world we live in now, so it doesn’t need to be any other way than supportive and embracing.”
And to that end, it looks like Martin was totally embraced. When the mama strutted her stuff while nursing her five-month-old, she got the attention and adoration of SI and the world alike.
Not only was Martin applauded for her statement, but many of the Swim Search models also made their own impact too. The 16 finalists included a range of women with different sizes, shapes, skin tones and more.
So bravo to SI for embracing Martin and her mama power!
