When writer and mama Christine Burke chronicled her genius idea to throw a wedding dress party she never could have imagined what would come next. A fellow mom, Caroline Sakla, read the creative gown reuse story and took Burke’s bash a step farther.

Sakla told Scary Mommy, “Not every mom is married, and not every mom still fits into their wedding dress.” And with this in mind, Sakla created the “Mom Prom.”

The mom, and owner of the Little Explorers play space in Palm Harbor, Florida, posted her Mom Prom idea on Facebook. Soon after, over 200 people had responded and were interested in the idea.

Scala got plenty of help turning her Mom Prom vision into a reality. Local mom-preneurs volunteered their DJ-ing, photography and other services for the event. The super-sized response did more than give Scala some extra help. With so much interest in the prom, she decided to turn it into a charity benefit for Foster Florida—an organization that helps families who foster children.

If you live in the Palm Harbor area and missed this year’s Mom prom, don’t worry. According to Scala, “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t do this every year.”
