Every year there are a handful of baby names that become so popular you’re sure to have a few kids turn their heads when you shout it out on the playground. The latest baby name trend could solve that duplicate name dilemma with some very unique selections.
While popular book and movie characters and celebrity names have long influenced naming future generations, the latest trend in baby names is being influenced by obscure references and a lot of imagination. According to newly released data from the U.S. Social Security Administration, in 2017 American parents made up over 1,000 new names.
Unique spellings of traditional names and even names of objects are trending. One of the most popular original names of the year was Camreigh, a twist on Camry. Another unique spelling was Mohana, which adds an “h” to the latest Disney princess. Mash-ups of names are another trend, like Knoxlee.
Other new choices included names inspired by other cultures, like Tewodros, stemming from an ancient Ethiopian emperor, and Iretomiwa, a common name in Nigeria, but only now introduced in the US.
