Barking Cat Studio Arts & Crafts for Everyone just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Awesome Art Class in New York. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!
Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome Art Class” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Barking Cat Studio Arts & Crafts for Everyone: The ability to really connect, encourage, nurture and engage with their children to provide them with a creative outlet to express themselves.
RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
BCSA: At Barking Cat, we help everyone find their voice and strengths. It’s not so much about the final outcome of a project, it’s all about the process and how we support each other to get there together.
RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
BCSA: Barking Cat Studio was originally a graphic design studio servicing customers in the toy industry. After the economic downturn, we were forced to downsize our staff. It was at that time I had to reinvent the business. The studio was originally located in a storefront in Boreum Hill, Brooklyn and the neighborhood had begun to change accommodating more families. It was then I got the wonderful idea to offer art classes to toddlers, and their caregivers, then eventually offering after-school classes, Saturday classes, birthday parties and school break camps.
RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
BCSA: Definitely coffee.
RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
BCSA: It’s the little stories that my customers share with me about their kids and how I have influenced their young lives, when their kids are not in the studio. To me that is the best gift I can receive.
RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
BCSA: Don’t really have one. I love what I do, there are just some task that I like less than others.
RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
BCSA: I laugh. A lot.
RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
BCSA: The ability to make everyone feel important and heard.
RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
BCSA: To treat EVERYONE with respect.
RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
DD: Hasn’t been any.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
BCSA: Sure! How about a BFF discount. Try out a class for $10 off, bring your BFF and their first class is $20 off.
