While it’s true that you probably don’t want to order up a custom-made cake for every single birthday or special occasion in your child’s life, some events may merit a bespoke creation. When that time comes, give Cake Hero a call. Melissa Torres runs this one-woman operation in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where she crafts cakes that are adorable, stylish and Instagram-ready. Flavors Basic and Beyond

You can get a Cake Hero creation in any flavor you like (Torres encourages requests), but most customers opt for vanilla or chocolate in the interest of pleasing most guests. Torres herself is partial to the vanilla, which she makes using a bit of sour cream, resulting in a cake that's sweet but not an all-out sugar assault. Spring also brings requests for lemon cakes, which Torres tops with fresh berry frosting, which is made using a berry puree reduction. Need a vegan cake? She can do that too.
