When we were young, grabbing a donut usually meant a trip to the nearest Krispy Kreme at a local strip mall. Fortunately for our kids, today’s donut runs hold a lot more appeal: artisanal bakeries in NYC have taken fried dough to a whole new level. Some focus on candy-covered and brunch-food inspired varieties. others insist on using entirely local ingredients. Prepare to drool as you click through our favorite NYC fry factories.

Elsie’s Doughnuts

Elsie’s Doughnuts is just one of the many hot new establishments that have opened up in Crown Heights. It boasts an old school concession-style takeout window that looks out on Bergen Street. The menu features gluten-free pastries, scones, coffee and, of course, donuts made from local gourmet ingredients. The formaggio donuts is made from Crown Finish Caves cheese. The Sweet Elsie’s glazed donut gets its cream filling from Hudson Valley Creamery. Your little sweet monsters will drool over the cannella al burro, a divine blend of dough, cinnamon and homemade butter. Or treat them to a savory delight and order the butterscotch donut made with salted peanuts.
