It’s a great time to be a vegan in New York City. From restaurants to cafés to food halls, meat-free eateries are popping up everywhere. And long gone are the days of brown rice and steamed vegetables. Today you can get vegan versions of Southern comfort food, traditional Mexican fare and even fast food burgers. Even better? They’ve got your little ones’ taste buds covered. Hello, mac ‘n’ cheese! All vegan, all family-friendly, all delicious. Click through to check out the city’s newest and greatest vegan restaurants and cafés.

JaJaJa Plantas Mexicana

If you’re a fan of authentic, classic tasting Mexican fare, you’ll go gagaga for Jajaja. This new vegan restaurant on the lower east side is quickly becoming a favorite among locals and those visiting New York. The atmosphere is colorful, fun and lively (a.k.a. perfect for toddlers that aren’t using their restaurant voice) and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The real beauty of Jajaja though is the menu - versions of a chorizo burrito, a sausage egg & cheese torta, and fish tacos are so good that even your meat-eating friends will soon be joining you there. And don’t forget to save room for dessert, the raspberry cheesecake and flan topped with coconut whipped cream are worth going back for alone.

Good to know: Jajaja is currently not accepting reservations and is walk-in only.
