While we all want kids who willingly chow on their veggies and sneer their noses up at greasy fast food, the reality is that living in our city where you can get pretty much anything delivered at any time of day (or night) means that come dinnertime, we often choose convenience over health. As parents of kids who would rather sit idly at the dinner table than swallow a morsel of broccoli, we couldn’t be more excited for the debut of Freshmade NYC, a family cooking school devoted to making food healthy, creative, fun.
About Freshmade NYC:
Founded by Cara Buffalino-Silman and Thomas Stevens (both parents who understand the challenge of pleasing little palates), Freshmade NYC is not your ordinary cooking venue. While they’ve been conducting private cooking classes in New Yorkers’ homes, Freshmade NYC’s new cooking school is catered to kids (even picky eaters are welcome). Their variety of classes will provide your children with the skills needed to create a fun, educational and healthy dinner and while we can’t guarantee it, they may just eat those veggies for once!
Besides the bevy of family cooking class offerings, what stands out most about Freshmade NYC’s launch is their huge 1,650 square foot new location, which features two full kitchens, work spaces, office, a parents lounge area, and a kids library with tons of cookbooks and storybooks about healthy eating, the environment, and gardening.
What We Love:
Besides their awesome cooking classes aimed at the skill set (and attention spans) of the little kids, we love that Freshmade NYC is all about making food fun and educating children about healthy and nutritious living. They even have an in-house catering team and event planner and their new space is available for cooking birthday parties and private events.
About the Classes: The first ever semester for Freshmade NYC will begin September 24th and run until December 14th. Choose from courses based on daily produce from the farmer’s market to cooking dinner as a whole family. These family-friendly classes will provide an opportunity for kids to gain hands-on skills that’ll challenge their ability in math, science, literacy, and motor development – all while have a yummy, healthy experience. Definitely check out their website for advance registration.
Classes to Choose From:
Farm to Table: Making meals here will always be a surprise. With seasonal fruits and veggies from a local, organic farmer’s market, these classes will create menus based on what’s available each week. Soon your kiddo will have refined taste buds and probably out-do you on your Saturday morning strolls through the farmer’s market. Classes are $475, and are held on Wednesdays or Fridays from 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm. Suitable for ages 3 – 4.5.
Lunch Express: Ideal for younger tots ready to embark on a tasting adventure with their mom or dad. This is an introductory class where toddlers get to mix, taste and chop their way through lunch. What a great way to spend lunch time with your tot. Classes are $450, and are held Tuesdays or Thursdays from 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm. Suitable for ages 2 – 3.5.
Kids Dinner Club: Let the kiddos decide what to eat. Even their favorite popcorn chicken and mac n’ cheese made with mom’s love can get a little tiring after a while. These classes, where kiddos “work together to create fun and healthy meals,” are definitely a way to get your kid excited about cooking. Classes are $450, and are held Mondays or Wednesdays from 4:45 pm – 5:45 pm. Suitable for ages 3 – 6.5.
Palette-Palate/Brunch & Munch: Join your little one for a unique experience in making mini frittatas to tiny “martinis.” This is an intimate class for you to not only bond with your kiddo, but learn early on what makes their taste buds happy. Classes are $450/475, and are held Tuesdays from 10:30 am – 11:30 am or Thursdays from 9:30 am – 10:30 am. Suitable for ages 2 – 3.5.
Family Dinner: Have the whole family together in the process of creating your own meal. Now your little one has a say in what goes in the family meal, and it’s a great experience if your youngest has an older brother or sister to help them out. Plus, cleanup included. Score! Classes are $495 for 2 adults, 1 child (each additional child is $175), and are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Suitable for ages 2.5 and up.
After School Pick-me Up: Energy packed snacks for your tot that won’t ruin their appetite! No more bagged chips or sweet candy – these classes are going to give your little one the right healthy snack that’ll work up one big appetite for dinner. Classes are $425 and are held Mondays or Wednesdays from 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm. Suitable for ages 4.5 – 9.
