For Fierce Takes on Fairy Tales: Fairy Tale Fashion
For fairy tale enthusiasts and budding fashionistas, "Fairy Tale Fashion" at the Museum at FIT is the one to hit. The exhibit looks at these traditional tales through the lens of high fashion, and features more than 80 objects such as dresses, purses and shoes in dramatic, fantasy-like settings designed by Kim Ackert. Garments dating from the 18th century to the 21st are showcased in archetypal settings such as "Forest", "Castle", and "Sea", and the "fairy tale aesthetic" is introduced through illustrations and the striking photography work of Kristy Mitchell's "Wonderland Series", for which the artist creates all the elaborate costumes. From traditional red velvet coats representing red riding hood, to edgy interpretations of mermaids, princesses, queens and more from designers such as Tom Ford, Prada, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabanna, this show is proof these tales can be as fantastical as anything one can imagine.
