Attention cake lovers! A second outpost of Bees Knees Baking Company, fully stocked with their famous cake cups of course, has arrived in Kip’s Bay. While the original West Village location is still going strong, now, with the opening of its Third Ave. and 26th St. location, midtownies can enjoy the bakery’s award-winning sweet treats locally. The cake cups are decadent, cakes complete with fillings and toppings layered elegantly in a single-serve cup. What’s more, everything Bee’s Knees makes contains natural (i.e. butter over hydrogenated shortening), locally-sourced ingredients. Keep reading for all the mouth watering details.

What’s to eat?

Choose from 30 cake cup flavors (favorites include Red Velvet, Carrot and Chocolate Salted Caramel), plus coffee house drinks, quiches, muffins, cookies, pastries and, once the shop’s liquor license is procured, a full tapas and wine bar menu.

A sweet spot for kids

Kids love this place. However, there are a few caveats: The space is on the narrow side, so while a single-wide stroller should be fine as long as there aren’t too many other strollers already there, do leave the double-wide model and all scooters, bikes and equipment bags at home.

The bathroom is clean, modern and easy-to-use, but don’t expect a changing table. Children are absolutely welcome, but this isn’t the place for large groups of high-energy kids or moms group meet ups. For the best experience, save Bee’s Knees for an after-school dessert stop, a post-movie treat or a fun afternoon tea with your child and his or her best bud.

Party with Bee’s Knees!

What about birthday parties? The space feels too small and not “kiddie” enough for a high octane children’s party, but there is a way to bring Bee’s Knees to you: The baking company welcomes bulk orders, which you can pick up directly from the store. In fact, the company’s cake cups are delicious (and might we add, visually impressive) options for baby showers, parties, picnic baskets, event favors, bat/bar mitzvahs (though offerings are not kosher), school lunches and even play dates.

Coming soon: Wine and more grown-ups

Now’s the best time to check out the place. Bees Knees Baking Company in Kip’s Bay just received its liquor license and has recently expanded its hours. It’s open Sun. through Thurs., 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Fri. and Sat. 8 a.m. – 12 a.m.

Now that it has the green light to serve beer and wine, owners Billy Mayer and Marco Stucky plan to target Kip’s Bay’s busy adult eating-and-drinking scene. They hope the eatery will attract post-date diners each evening and brunch-going couples on weekend mornings.

For now, however, Bee’s Knees hasn’t been overtaken by packs of entertainment-seeking adults. It feels like a friendly neighborhood sweet spot—and the perfect place to celebrate a sweet summer afternoon.
