New York City has produced top film directors like Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee, so why shouldn’t your kid be next? With toddlers already filming with your cell phone, it’s never too early to learn the nuts and bolts of real filmmaking. From animation classes to documentary film courses, here are seven film classes that may pave the way to that day when your kid utters the words, “I’d like to thank the Academy.”

Lights, Camera or Act

New York Film Academy. For the tweens in your family, the New York Film Academy offers a wide variety of filmmaking courses from digital filmmaking to animation to acting. The sessions typically run 12 consecutive Saturdays during the school year. The hands-on classes in directing, writing, editing, cinematography, and production cover the creative and technical demands of telling a story with moving images. NYFA also hosts summer camps that last two weeks that focus on digital filmmaking.
