Although you’re on duty seven days a week (Fridays aren’t exactly what they used to be, eh?!), getting back into the groove each Monday challenges even the best of us. Today, if your calendar looks dauntingly empty, check out one of these drop-in classes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers that happen every Monday in Manhattan.

92Y lunchtime play


1. Midday Workout for Two: Lunch Playtime with Parents at 92nd Street Y

Parents aren’t required to do somersaults or handstands at this gymnastics-inspired workout but budding athletes ages 18 months to 4 years will enjoy the chance to roll, tumble and flip at the 92nd Street Y every Monday under the guidance of  USA Gymnastics coaches.

2. Discover Dinosaurs: Storytime at the American Museum of Natural History

Amid the towering dinosaurs and animals of the African plains, kids ages 2.5 to 5 can gather for playtime, a story and songs, all included with the price of regular museum admission. Two sessions are offered and tickets can be claimed at the entrance of the Discovery Room.

Cost: Free with museum entrance fee of $22 for adults and $12.50 for kids age 2 to 5; free for kids under age 2.

3. Sing and Dance: Munchkin Music Club at the Museum of Motherhood

The Museum of Motherhood is committed to “putting motherhood on the map” and they offer a robust roster of classes for moms and kids alike, including the Munchkin Music Club which is led by the energetic Mr. James for all ages.

Cost: Free with museum entrance fee of $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5+, free for kids under age 5.

4. Visit an Animal Kingdom: Freeplay at The Art Farm in the City

Not many places in our great city allow you to get up close and personal with furry creatures – the subway system excluded – so head to the Art Farm in the City to nuzzle a rabbit and open your hands for a hermit crab. They are open for freeplay for ages 6 months and older, which includes arts and crafts in addition to animal encounters. Who knows, your little one may even talk you into signing up for a part-time pet!

5. Clown Around: Playtime with Sammie and Tudie at Sprout San Francisco

Sammie and Tudie – dubbed the “cutest couple in clowning” – delight kids (ages 1 to 3.5) and their grown-ups every Monday at Sprout San Francisco. Not only do they claim to make the world a better place, one smile at a time, but also they’ll start your week on a bright note with their storytelling, songs and magic.

6. Music Class Meets Foreign Language: Bilingual Birdies Spanish at City Treehouse

This Chelsea kid mecca says “bienvenido” to you and your little one on Monday mornings when they host Bilingual Birdies Spanish. Using music, games, puppets and more, kids age 6 months to 5 years can practice their budding language skills.

7. Soccer for Beginners: Kick and Play at Kids at Work

Join Mimi and Pepe, soccer-playing puppets extraordinaire, for Kick and Play, an introductory soccer program, which introduces kids ages 12 to 26 months to basic concepts of soccer in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Sign up online for your desired class.

8. New Walkers and Little Readers: Storytime at the New York Public Library 42nd Street

The Children’s Center in the heart of the main NYPL branch is a little-known gem for most New York City parents. Head to Bryant Park each Monday for Baby Laptime for New Walkers, a 30-minute program featuring music, games and dancing. Word to the wise: Tickets are free but available on a first-come, first-served basis and those in the know arrive early to snag one.

9. Music, Yoga and More: Swaddle Waddle Movement & Minds at Books of Wonder

Swaddle up your little one and head to Books of Wonder for Swaddle Waddle’s Movement & Minds, a class geared towards moms and their babies ages 4 months to 3 years. You’ll bond with your tot through music, yoga and movement – parachute play and musical shakers included. Head online to claim your spot up to 1 hour before class time.

10. Monday Mat Time: Yoga with Lil’ Yogis at Citibabes

Add a little Namaste to your Mondays by heading to Soho’s Citibabes for a Lil’ Yogis class for two year olds. Your kid will find his own way on the mat as he stimulates his creativity and explores his imagination. The class is full of games, songs and creative props – and no shortage of fun!

11. Creative Outlet: Drop-in Art Classes at Children’s Museum of the Arts

Take advantage of painting, marker and clay stations, along with lots of other art-y activities in the CMA’s WEE arts studio before the Museum opens its doors for the day. WEE teaching assistants lead little ones through creative projects, music and storytime. Parallel learning is encouraged so bring your singing voice and come prepared to bust out your best stick figures as you spend 75 minutes journeying through your child’s imagination.
