You may love city living, but that doesn’t mean you can’t crave fresh air and the chance for your kids to frolic in nature every now and again, too. The good news is, the tri-state area boasts plenty of nature trails within just one hour of the city that are easy enough for you and your little urbanites to conquer.

The landscape of the 28-acre Wave Hill combines wide open spaces with nooks and crannies, plus a half-mile long woodland trail complete with gazebo, that offers variety for short legs and big minds. Visitors are encouraged to get up close and friendly with nature (short of climbing trees), in order to encourage a genuine connection with the natural world. Take advantage of the weekly Family Art Project, free with admission; every Saturday and Sunday morning, in which families spend time outdoors and indoors with storytelling and art-making, all centered around a different theme each week. Also on tap: birding walks, nature walks and talks, Mommy and Baby Yoga and Stories in the Garden.

Good to Know: Each Saturday morning admission to the grounds is free until noon, ensuring that a visit will remain affordable for families.
