We get it, Brooklyn. You’ve got a lot going on. So much so that it’s hard to keep up with all the kid-friendly places for jumping and climbing, getting mucky with paints and clay, quiet reading, shopping for some rainbow bling or filling empty tummies with something delicious. But we try! Click through for 9 fresh places just in Brownstone Brooklyn alone.
For Fresh Pastries and Space Inside and Out: Sheila’s
This roomy and bright Carroll Gardens bakery and cafe (formerly the home of restaurant Dover) opened at the beginning of May and has been rolling out menus over the past few weeks. (When we stopped by, brunch and lunch were in effect, while a dinner menu was still in the works.) Pastries, including chocolate and pistachio croissants, brioche and breads, are made on site each day, and breakfast fare includes egg sandwiches of all kinds. Lunch offerings include soups (pea with leeks, potato and creme fraiche), quiche, cottage pie, sandwiches (house-smoked brisket, fried haddock) and market bowls (roasted salmon, salt cod). The main dining area is open enough for a stroller or a fidgety child and a lovely large, shaded outdoor patio provides more space for a meal or quick snack with the kids.
