Finally, the unofficial start of summer is upon us! Celebrate our troops and a season of outdoor fun with our lineup of family-friendly events. Visit the Intrepid for a full weekend of Memorial Day activities and performances or stop by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan on Monday to make cards for US troops. The LES Festival of the Arts has their youth program on Saturday, which also happens to be National Tap Dance day so kids can take a free class in midtown. Searching for other fun? In Search of the Unicorn
Do your kids believe in unicorns? Imagine a fantasy-driven world with unicorns and dragons lurking about at this Cloisters workshop. You’ll learn about these fantastic creatures of the Middle Ages and hear stories medieval people told about them. And of course, kids won’t go home empty handed. Memorial Day is so much more than a day off of school and the start of summer. Show your kids the true meaning of this day with a Thank You Card making workshop at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Tap Your Heart Out
Celebrate National Tap Dance Day with free Tap Classes in NYC at Nola Studios. The schedule includes: Try Tap, a Basic Tap Class for Kids under 12 at 11:00 am and Love Tap, a  Beginner/Intermediate Tap Class for Kids under 12 at 12:00 pm. If you want to “Try Tap” and don’t have tap shoes, hard soled shoes or boots will work just fine. Sat., 11:00 am & 12:00 pm. Even though Fleet Week is canceled this year, you can still visit the Intrepid this weekend for an array of festive Memorial Day activities. 18th Annual LES Festival of the Arts
Theater for the New City Presents the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts with three days of performances, food, vendors and more. There will be a special youth program from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, which features kids performing for kids. Expect a selection of juggling, bubbles, dance, theater and music curated for children. Sat., 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Lower East Side. Free. All ages. Event details.

Learn to Ride: McCarren Park
Think your child is ready to ride, but not sure how to teach him? The Parks Department and Bike New York are here to help with a free class that teaches you how to help your kid learn to ride a two-wheeler using the “balance first” method. Class participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike and your little rider may even master the task before you leave.
