For most of us, learning to swim was a childhood rite of passage, one that we want for our own children, too. Even though we’re surrounded by water, no one’s dipping into the Hudson or East River (for good reason.) Fortunately, it’s easier than you may think to find the perfect swim lessons for your kids, no matter what their age or level. Here are seven of our favorites to get your family water — and warm weather — ready!

For a Lesson in an Apartment Building or Health Club: Take Me to the Water

Take Me To The Water has been around since the mid-1980s, offering half-hour to 45-minute private and semi-private classes in luxury apartment buildings, as well as health clubs. Lessons meet once-weekly for three to four months at a stretch. Comfort in and around water is built in to the entire "swim lesson experience," hence one of the school's rules: Water must be “an ideal temperature for learning to swim, not too cold, not too hot.” Take Me To The Water's emphasis is on water safety and confidence, teaching children how to feel comfortable and empowered in the water.

Tip: Take Me To The Water requires that a caregiver stay poolside during a child’s lesson. In other words, you won't be able to run errands while your guppy swims.
