For most of us, learning to swim was a childhood rite of passage, one that we want for our own children, too. Even though we’re surrounded by water, no one’s dipping into the Hudson or East River (for good reason.) Fortunately, it’s easier than you may think to find the perfect swim lessons for your kids, no matter what their age or level. Here are seven of our favorites to get your family water — and warm weather — ready!

For an Old Standby: Asphalt Green

The granddaddy of NYC swim programs, Ashphalt Green’s warm water pool, identically-trained instructors and performance-based curriculum, make it a favorite of kids and parents. Classes run once a week for 16 weeks, and are narrowly broken down by age group: 0-36 months, 3-5 years, 5- 8 years, 9-14 years and 15- 17 years. In each of these age categories, there are classes for beginner, advanced and intermediate swimmers. Asphalt Green also boasts a youth swim team and specialty swim classes, including deep water swim and swim lessons for children with disabilities. Note: If you need a flexible lesson schedule, Asphalt Green is not your place. Lessons are given on Saturdays and Sundays and you must pay upfront for the full 16 week-term.

Tip: Downtown families may want to look into Asphalt Green’s recently opened Battery Park City facility at 212 North End Avenue.
