New York City parents need playgrounds as much as they need air: to stave off the tedium of our apartments and give kids a chance to roam. But when your closest playground starts to feel like your backyard and your neighborhood starts to feel like your living room, its time to cross some borders. With this handy guide, a visit to a new playground comes complete with a great bite to eat because after all of that running, swinging, sliding and climbing, your kid is sure to work up an appetite.

Play at Union Square Playground, Eat at Breads Bakery

Union Square playground's most unique feature is its climbable, slidable dome, but its two super-steep steel slides, tunnel slide and newly renovated sandbox have special appeal, too. For food, no one should pass up a chance to visit Union Square Green Market, but Breads Bakery is not to be missed either. The cafe has been a hit since the day it opened in February 2013, serving scrumptious sandwiches, salads and quiches. Take a braided, flakey, Nutella and dark chocolate filled babka to go.

Go: Union Square Playground, 16th St. at Union Square West; Breads Bakery, 18 E. 16th St., Union Square
