New York City parents need playgrounds as much as they need air: to stave off the tedium of our apartments and give kids a chance to roam. But when your closest playground starts to feel like your backyard and your neighborhood starts to feel like your living room, its time to cross some borders. With this handy guide, a visit to a new playground comes complete with a great bite to eat because after all of that running, swinging, sliding and climbing, your kid is sure to work up an appetite.

Play at First Playground, Eat at Russ and Daughters

Perfect for kids mastering their monkey bars skills, First Playground also features big kid and baby swings, a sweet little fish fountain and a slew of donated cars and bikes. Russ and Daughters, the permanently popular, and 100 year old appetizing shop, awaits just across Houston. With toppings like salmon roe, this is the fanciest bagel sandwich you’ll ever eat, and for kids the standards remain: cream cheese, egg salad or butter, with Joray fruit rolls for dessert.

Go: First Playground, 1st St. at 1st Ave.; Russ and Daughters, 179 E. Houston St., Lower East Side
