Sodor at the Science Center
Recommended for kids ages 2 to 8, Thomas & Friends: Explore the Rails opened on September 23. The exhibit brings the Island of Sodor to the Jersey City museum, and promises an immersive setting in which kids can play and engage in activities that underscore age-appropriate concepts in science, technology, engineering and math (AKA: STEM.)

Something for everyone
With multiple levels of engagement, the show give younger kids the chance to practice counting, compare sizes and identify colors, while older children can practice math skills, engage in some basic engineering and science ideas, and even get an introduction to the technology of engines.

Lots to Explore in Sodor
The settings of the television series brought to the Science Center include Knapford Station and the Sodor Steamworks, and several key players are here as well.

Kids can climb aboard a large-scale model of Thomas and explore the inner workings of the engine, while the “Get Percy Going” area encourages visitors to observe and analyze how Percy’s engine makes and uses steam energy.

At the “Loading Zone” kids can design and test different ways to arrange cargo on a train car, and “Tick Tock, Fix the Clock” help build knowledge of clocks and telling the time. At “Every Part Has a Purpose”, visitors remove and replace train parts, encouraging problem-solving, and at the large “Train Table” (of course there’s a train table) kids design and create tracks to help trains accomplish assorted tasks.
