Sure, who doesn’t love a slice of freshly baked pie? From pumpkin to cherry, rhubarb to blueberry, pie come in just about every flavor you can imagine. But why go through the painstaking process of having to make your own pie when Portland is full of bakeries and restaurants that offer delicious slices of your favorite flavor–without the work. If you’re planning a holiday gathering, make sure to call and order your holiday pies soon–many of these places book up quickly.
Screen Door: What better place to start our pie suggestions than a true Southern-style restaurant? It’s a well-known fact in Portland that families come to Screen Door for the fried chicken and stay for the pie – from pecan to strawberry coconut cream pie; this is not the place to be concerned about your child’s sugar intake. Beware – the wait at Screen Door can be long on the weekends, so try visiting on a quieter weekday evening. Parents especially love coming here for pie and for meals, and because it’s a bit noisier you can easily conceal a squealing toddler.

Pie Spot: This wouldn’t be a complete Portland food list without including a food cart, and this tiny turquoise trailer creates some of the tastiest pies in Portland. Kids love food carts because it doesn’t require any sitting and waiting – and, Pie Spot makes tiny little pies (we dare you not to laugh when your three-year old orders a Pie Hole) that are perfect for little appetites. Be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook page where you can find out what they’re offering each day – we highly recommend the S’mores Pie Holes, for kids of all ages!

Banning’s Restaurant and Pie House: Sometimes, going to a classic diner is your best bet for pie and in Portland, Banning’s is the place to go. They make all their pies in house with the freshest ingredients and let us be the first to tell you – they are delicious – true classic pies: cherry, banana cream and strawberry rhubarb. Add a cup of coffee for you and a hot chocolate for the kids and this is the perfect pie outing! Their whole pie prices are also very reasonable, if you want to take one home to enjoy later or for a special occasion.

Perry’s on Fremont: Although Perry’s offers a full-menu (which is tasty, by the way), we suggest popping in for a slice of pie! Their pie menu is long and varied with kid favorites like peanut butter pie. Families love it at Perry’s because they can typically walk right in and get a table and the servers are very sweet. Be sure to give Perry’s a call before you go to see what special pies they have for the night – some are only served on weekends and some are only served during the week.
