Whitaker Ponds

Here, you'll share the road with semi trucks headed though an industrial part of Portland, and you'll wonder if you're in the right place. Park outside the gate, and step into a little slice of nature in a bustling part of the city. Patient visitors, walking at toddler speed, might see ducks, turtles and beavers all going about their business. The .5-mile loop around the ponds and slough is perfect for little legs, but beware that some of the docks have no railings.

Know before you go: Yes, it’s a lot of fun to feed ducks, we know! But the Audubon Society asks you not to, please. Pass along the lesson to your kids, and pass on the loaf of bread.
