the scoop:

Celebrate the Japanese New Year. In ancient Japanese culture, each grain of rice was believed to symbolize a human soul.  At the end of each year, communities would offer the rice and their subsequent symbolic souls to the gods by pounding on it with wooden mallets.  This act was said to have purified their own souls.  The rice was then made into rice cakes, called mochi.  Mochitsuki means mochi-making. Visitors can take learn how to pound rice, try calligraphy and origami and more, as well as enjoying taiko and traditional dance performances.
