Kristina Godfrey

"Almost every fall I take my daughter Mia to Oregon Heritage Farms for a caramel apple, a jug of cider, and a hay ride through the bustling apple orchard. Last year, a half dozen watercolor artists sat with their easels propped up alongside the apple trees, painting the burnt orange, yellow and red colors along the south hills. My daughter watched their colorful creations in wonder before remembering she wanted a chewy caramel apple.

A mile down the road, at Smith’s Berry Farm we buy pumpkins and pay 25 cents to feed their black and white-speckled goats and caramel-colored chickens. Lunch is across the street at South Store Cafe, where they serve homemade soups, sandwiches and pastry yummies behind the oak counter of the old General Store and meeting hall.

It’s a trip that is both nostalgic and fun for me and the girls. When I was kid -- 40 years ago -- my parents stopped for a pop at the same South Store on their way to Newport. To me this tiny Scholls community is a wonderful trip back in time to when there were no housing developments, noisy streets and big box stores. I know my husband prefers OSU fall football, but for us, this is the beauty of fall."
