Happy New Year! Who says New Year’s celebrations are only for the grownups? We’ve got plenty of events this weekend that are all about the little people ringing in 2011 in their own unique and fun way! There’s an all-night bash at Kids Club for the 4- to 12-year-old set, a New Year’s Eve Sock Hop, a DJ dance party and countdown at Portland Children’s Museum, and a P. Bear’s New Year’s Party story time. If you’re looking for a yummy dinner out with the kids, head to Yakuza in NE Portland on Sunday for their Kid’s Happy Hour. Finally, perhaps it’s time for some quality family learing and discovery at the Portland Art Museum where they’ll offer tours, art making and story times all centered around a theme of music.

P. Bear’s New Year’s Party at Barnes & Noble Lloyd Center
A fun story with learning—counting and telling time—built in! A dapper polar bear has an elegant New Year’s party and invites all of his animal friends: one whale, two horses, three cows, and so forth until midnight. You’re invited as we count our way to the New Year with Paul Owen Lewis’s story. Fri., 11:00 a.m. – noon, Portland, free. Event details.

Yakuza Kid’s Happy Hour
Couldn’t find a sitter for a New Year’s Eve date night? Do the next best thing and head to Yakuza—NE Portland foodie favorite—with the kiddos in tow for their Kids Happy Hour. The grownups will enjoy their signature dishes and drinks and the 1-2-3 Kids Menu provides a choice of 1-2-3 items for 1-2-3 dollars each, including avocado or edamame ($1), noodles or rice ($2), and chicken, salmon or pork katzu ($3). Sun., 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Portland, prices vary. Event details.

New Year’s at NOON
Better than Times Square and earlier too! Portland Children’s Museum will count us down to the New Year every half hour starting at 11:00 a.m. and going to 1:00 p.m. DJ Greasy Kids Stuff will spin music, plus dancing, noisemakers and hats. Fri., 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Portland, $8 per person, under 1 free. Event details.

Sundays for Families
Start the New Year with a family outing to the Portland Art Museum! The theme is music, and there are lots of family-oriented activities planned: tours, drop-in art making, and story times. Sun., 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Portland, $12 18+, 17 and under free. Event details.
