Happy 2014! If you have resolved to be more active, this weekend is chock-full of offerings to help you and your family start the new year off on the right foot. Swing your partner at a Family Square Dance lesson, boogie with Mr. Palindrome, stroll around the Lan Su Chinese Garden or, if you are up for a trip to see some snow, head to Mt. Hood Skibowl for a little shredding and a snowboard competition before school’s back in session.
Wow! It’s Mr. Palindrome
Based out of Sydney, Australia, Mr. Palindrome is a one-man-show in a hipster blazer who introduces big words and concepts, like alliteration, anagrams, onomatopoeia and palindromes to little people through wacky stories and impossibly irresistible, effervescent songs. Sun., 1-2 p.m., $5 suggested donation, All Ages. Event details.
The Little Lady in Red
Once Upon a Time Family Theatre presents the traditional story of Little Red Riding Hood and gives it a modern twist to keep it fresh and unexpected. In this simple, but engaging adaptation, kids will explore with Little Red Riding Hood the concept of what friendship means through live theatre and storytelling. Sat., 12 – 1 p.m., $1-$2, All Ages. Event details.
It’s been said that, if you can count to four, you can square dance. While that may be true, there is more to it than four counts, petticoats and western wear. Tonight, put on your dancing shoes, grab your family and learn the basics of square dancing from real live square dancin’ club members from Tigard’s own Tri Squares Square Dance Club. Fri., 7:15 – 8:15 p.m., Free, All Ages. Event details.
Take your family on a cultural excursion and immerse yourselves in the beauty of the Lan Su Chinese Garden. The garden, built by Chinese artisans from Suzhou, is based on the 2,000 year-old tradition of harmoniously combining art, architecture, design and nature and remains the most authentic garden of its kind outside of China. Sat., 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Free admission with food donation, All Ages. Event details.
Worth the Drive
