There’s really nothing like summer time in Portland. The weather is at its best, everything is green and gorgeous, and you get to spend time exploring this fun city. Summer is also the season for festivals in and around Portland – featuring everything from hot air balloons to juggling, you’re sure to find a festival that you and your kids will love!

Festival of Balloons

The early morning launch of the spectacular fleet of hot air balloons is worth it (grab coffee on the way!) and the Night Glow event will make your little one’s eyes shine! Don’t miss all the events beyond the balloons – a full carnival, live music, soccer tournaments and so much more.

It’s berry mania at the Oregon Berry Festival! Located in a huge empty parking lot in the Pearl District, this family friendly event is perfect for young children. There are berry tastings, local berry vendors selling berry goods, berry bake-offs and even a berry gala at the end of the weekend.

Portland Pirate Festival
Arrr! This festival was close to being cancelled this year, due to lack of funds, but the community pulled together and the pirates are ready to celebrate! If you have a little one who is pirate obsessed, you can’t miss this event that will make you feel as if you are truly in another world. Don’t miss the pirate reenactments with cannon demonstrations, the kid’s area with free airbrush tattoos and pirate “celebrities” roaming around. By the way, pirate attire is encouraged!
When: September 3-4, 2011
Where: St. Helens, just outside Portland. Keep an eye on their website for exact directions, coming soon.
Cost: 1-Day Passes: Adult (13 years and older) $10 advance, $12 at Gate; Youth (12 and under) $5 advance, $6 Gate. 2-Day Passes also available, see website. Don’t forget some extra gold for pirate souvenirs & full sized turkey legs.

There will also be special guest performers to enjoy and vendors for picking up juggling supplies!

Where: Reed College Sports Center 3203 Southeast Woodstock Boulevard, Portland 97202 – just off 28th Avenue on the west end of campus
