Maybe you’ve heard of some of these museums, but we bet you haven’t yet explored these hidden gems with your kids. These small, local museums are an easy (and cheap) way to find adventure in your own backyard. Keep in mind that many of the museums on this list are staffed by volunteers so it’s always a good idea to call ahead to confirm opening hours. Flip through the gallery to begin your adventure.

Blackhawk Automotive Museum, East Bay

Cars, cars, and more cars and memorabilia too. International and vintage classics, photos, hood ornaments, and more this museum is dedicated to the history of automobiles. They offer lots of educational programs for local school groups, and the first Sunday of every month is their Coffee and Cars event, for auto aficionados to gather in the parking lot and show off their vehicles over a cup of joe.

Hours: Wed.- Sun., 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Also open on many Monday school holidays.
Cost: $15/adults; $10/children 6-18; children under 6 are free
