Nothing is quite like summer. School is out, camping trips are on the and veggies are as fresh as ever. This weekend in Oakland you can explore a new farmers market on the East side or learn to make fermented veggies on the North side. If that’s not your jam then the famed silhouette artist Karl Johnson will be cutting out memories all weekend across the Bay. Explore a castle exploration in Pacifica or blast on over to a space festival in Marin—this weekend is out of this world!

San Francisco

Head back to School with the ABCs
Rock out before the first bell with the Alphabet Rockers Back to School Concert at the Asian Art Museum. This admission free family fun day includes a concert mixed with art, beatboxing and dancing, of course. Third Generation Silhouette Artist Karl Johnson will be at Right Start San Francisco to create hand cut silhouettes. Each one is cut freehand and takes just minutes. Get your Kruat on Kids
Head over to this great new neighborhood shop, Preserved, where kids can learn all about vegetable fermentation. Kids will taste their way through various samples of krauts, kimchi and pickles created through a process of a simple salt brine. Afterwards kids will get the chance to choose from a spread of vegetables and spices to make their own jars of sauerkraut to ferment at home. Sat. Event details.

Eat your Veggies in East Oakland
Hey, Oakland. There’s a new farmers market in town the first Saturday of each month at East Oakland Youth Development Center. Come early and grab a $5 sample bag of fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, dairy, grains, nuts, bread and olive oil. The fresh produce market and cooking events are part of EOYDC’s Cooking: Farm to Table series by CIVIL, an urban food platform and learning kitchen beginning in Oakland. Sat. Event details.

A Street Fest you won’t Forget
The Fremont Festival of the Arts is the largest street festival west of the Mississippi. The annual two-day event features entertainment and activities for all ages to enjoy, including more than 600 artisan booths, live music on two stages, street performers, an international array of gourmet cuisine, food trucks and tasty beverages. This Play is the Bare Necessities

This Fair is Moving Full STEAM Ahead
The Santa Clara County Fair’s theme this year is “Full Steam Ahead,” tapping into STEAM activities. Don’t worry, there will be still be tons of rides such as the good old Ferris Wheel and plenty of funnel cakes but also new features called Mind Works, called part science and part wizardry mixed with puzzles, classic games and much more. Conquer a Castle this Weekend
Do you want to check out a real castle? You’re in luck because not only is the 1908 Pacifica Castle open for tours it’s also the most original you’re likely to take. That’s because during the 90-minute visit ghosts from the past wander through the castle explaining various parts of the castle’s cool history. Blast off at a Moon Fest
Moonwalk on over to the this space fest, where you can shake hands with real moon walkers and astronauts that have blasted off into space.
