San Francisco

Head to Niñolandia at SF’s Carnaval Festival and Parade
The 40th annual Carnaval San Francisco is a free 2-day family Festival and Parade packed with the best of Latin American and Caribbean cultural arts and traditions.The largest multi-cultural festival on the West Coast, Carnaval features global cuisine, international music, dance, arts & crafts, Niñolandia with children’s activities for the kids and more. The Grand Parade is on Sunday, May 27th, at 9:30 a.m. Sat.-Sun. Event details.

Memorial Day 21-Gun Salute at the Presidio
Join veterans, families and the community for the annual Memorial Day grand march and ceremony at the Presidio to honor the history and commitment of service men and women. The Grand March with veterans and the 191st Army Band begins at 10:30 a.m. from the Presidio Officers’ Club with a formal program to follow at 11 AM at the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio.  A 21-Gun Salute by the U.S. Army’s Pacific Training Division will take place at noon at Pershing Square, Main Post. A free tour of the cemetery will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Meet at the large tree near the cemetery crossroads. Mon. Event details.

East Bay

We’re not Kidding about this Kid Fest
This is it, kids. It’s all for you, well mostly you, from dozens of activities for littles as well as tweens to parents including face painting, balloon art, bounces and crawls. The 29th Annual Kidfest in Concord has hundreds of arts and crafts booths and non-stop entertainment on the community stage, plus food courts, a zip line, rides, you might need to go to all three days of this festival just to take everything in. Let’s go Fly (and Make) a Kite
What do art and wind have in common? Kites. You guessed it, the San Ramon Art & Wind Festival will include over 150 arts and crafts booths, live entertainment and kite-flying demos. Families can participate in free kite making workshops or play games and hop on some cool rides. Sun.-Mon. Event details.

South Bay

Whack a Pinata at the Taco Festival
This deliciously named festival has a bevy of awesome food to choose from which will please the parents but kids will love the pinatas, balloon artists, face painters, Luche Libre (Mexican-style masked wrestling) and the Annual Air Accordion Championship. Sat. Event details.

Take a Civil War History Lesson IRL
Roaring Camp Railroads is holding its Annual Civil War Battles and Encampment throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Families can travel back in time to experience one of the longest running reenactments in the Western United States, which includes sounds of cavalry charges, musket fire and artillery shells. It also includes a train ride through the forest where you’ll get a first hand look at a soldier’s daily life, cooking over a campfire and cleaning his musket. Finally, fill up on a Chuck Wagon Barbecue at the camp. This year, there is a special evening encampment on May 27th. Sat.-Mon. Event details.

U-Pick the Berry Best
Ready to get your berry on? Then make way to Coastways Ranch in Pescadero where you can pick your own strawberries. Organic strawberries are $5 per pound and $4.50 per pound if you pick more than 10 pounds. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing, dress in layers and bring your SPF. Sat.-Sun. Event details.

Chow Down at the Muir Beach Volunteer Fireman’s Barbecue
The 46th Annual Muir Beach Volunteer Firemen’s Barbecue is a fun event for the whole family with delicious food, activities for the kids, and dancing to live music. An annual Memorial Day Weekend tradition in MarinThe Firemen’s Barbecue is a festive gathering and fundraiser for the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Some of Marin and the Bay Area’s best musicians will rock the stage while Muir Beach firefighters and community members tend to smoky grills. Sought after raffle prizes are offered and, for the kids, there is a special play zone with climbing walls and bounce houses. Sun. Event details.

Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade
Bust out the red, white, and blue and join the town of Mill Valley in honoring Veterans everywhere. Kids can collect candy, watch a wonderful parade and enjoy creative floats as well as inventive window displays. Mon. Event details.
