The fog is rolling into San Francisco and it’s getting hot outside the city…meaning summer’s almost here! There are plenty of indoor pools and outdoor pools to suit your microclimate and geographic location, so put on your bathing suits and jump on in. Here’s a list of a few of our favorite places for kids to take a swim lesson:
Swim in San Francisco
Janet Pomeroy Center features the warmest pool in San Francisco and is conveniently located near San Francisco Zoo, Lake Merced and Stern Grove, to create a full day of kid activities! The center offers classes for infants and caregivers starting at 6 months all the way up 12 year olds. Registration for summer session classes just started this week so there is plenty of availability!
UCSF offers two amazing family-friendly pools at Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center in Mission Bay. Swim lessons are typically at the indoor pool, are open to the public, and range from mommy-and-me classes with infants, to preschool swimmers and youth swim team up to age 12. The summer session starts in early July and registration just opened to the public. You’ll be sure to find something that suits your needs, and if not just visit the resort-like rooftop pool during family swim hour!
Paddle Around the Bay Area
La Petit Baleen has three locations—one in San Francisco (in the Presidio), but the other two down south in San Bruno and Half Moon Bay. Families love this swim school because of its new facilities, year-round programming and emphasis on teaching skills in the water (and warm water). LPB is membership based, so after summer the classes continue!
King’s Swim Academy in San Mateo is convenient for families along the peninsula and offers swim classes year-round. Become a member here and receive a weekly swim class for your children with experienced instructors in a 90-degree pool!
Marinwood in San Rafael offers a host of different swim classes throughout the summer and easy online registration! There is an outdoor 25-yard length pool and a separate tot pool for children under age seven with a beautiful park and playground situated next to the aquatics facilities. Get your dose of summer heat and outdoor pool fun here!
Who didn’t grow up visiting the YMCA as a kid? With eleven locations in San Francisco, nine on the East bay, two in southern Marin and one down south in San Mateo, the Y may offer the most aquatic programs in the Bay Area. Each branch location has different class offerings, so be sure to search for the location nearest you on their web site to see what swim lesson works for you.
Community recreation centers are another option for swim lessons that is welcoming and affordable. Livermore Area Recreation and Park District and East Bay Regional Park District offer so many swim classes in the East Bay that your eyes will get tired just perusing all the options! Mill Valley Community Center in Marin is another popular pool with great facilities and lessons. San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department offers a host of aquatic programs and much more this summer. Act quickly though as programs fill up fast! Visit your local town or county recreation department for pool information and summer schedules.
We want to hear from you – where will you be taking your kids to swim lessons this summer?
