Sharone Mendes Nassi is definitely in the family business. She’s the genius behind Carmel Blue, a well-known San Francisco resource for new parents with lots of questions, old pros who want to refresh their knowledge, and everyone in between. A community hotspot, Carmel Blue offers classes, products, and all sorts of social opportunities and was your pick for Most Awesome Baby & Maternity Shop in the Bay Area. Sharone recently took time to dish about winning a Totally Awesome Award, the tricks of being a mom-business owner, and more.
Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do your customers value most about your business?
Sharone Mendes Nassi: Our customers love our assortment of products, our personable service, our classes, and that we readily provide “survival skills” for those first few months of parenting.
We hand-pick our products, and we stay on top of the market for innovation, health and design. People come from across town because they know they will always find something great and very useful for themselves or as a gift.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
SMN: The need for a business like mine. When I had my son, the only place to meet other moms was at Trader Joe’s! I started mom groups and found that community of new parents to be key to my happy, healthy parenting experience. My background is in product development so researching products and having a good eye for “winners” is something with which I have a lot of experience.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
SMN: Love what you do! You have to love what you do. Even on the days that you hate it, you have to remember that you love it.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
SMN: Be realistic. Set a practical and do-able schedule for work and for the kids. Don’t try to work and take care of the kids at the same time. Set up a lot of play dates. If all else fails—bribe them with yummy snacks.
And be a good Boss to yourself…..
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
SMN: I keep getting those proudest moments—it’s every time a new mom or dad (or both) tell me how we made the whole new parent experience so much better for them.
And of course – Winning Red Tricycle’s best baby store in SF award! The award shows me that the community that we have set out to support supports us back.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
SMN: Yes, $10 off of $50 or more spent on products.
