East Bay eco-conscious shopping just got an adorable boost with the addition of a fun pop-up shop and art gallery on the Berkeley end of Solano Avenue. Kee-Ka Organics, a brand found in some of the Bay Area’s better green gift shops, just moved to the East Bay from the company’s birthplace in Brooklyn.
Owner (and Berkeley native) Yaron Litwin named his line of organic cotton onesies and layette sets after the sweet sounds of baby babble, in an effort to embrace every form of self-expression he started with organic cotton onesies and bibs adorned with baby nicknames like “honey bunny” and “sweet pea”, with accompanying illustrations by Litwin’s sister. The best part about this perfect gift is that each onesie comes with a recycled cardboard postage-ready mailing box, making long-distance baby shower gift-giving effortless.
Kee-Ka has since moved on to kimono-front bodysuits, rompers, leggings and socks, in stripes of vibrant colors and soothing earth tones made from low-impact fabric dyes. The company works with fair trade and fair wage suppliers, and uses minimal packaging.
The shop itself is an inviting space at the top of Solano, and in keeping with the neighborhood’s affinity for art and galleries, Litwin and his wife have curated a selection of works by local artists like Don Hamerman and Dan McClain to display in the store. Colorful and whimsical, most of the paintings and photographs would work equally well in a nursery or a family room. A pair of high-mobiles over the register sing in the white-walled space, and other lines for sale in the shop include charming, classic wooden toys from Maine Toys, gorgeous stuffed animals and puppets made from repurposed materials (like luxe cashmere sweaters) by Cate & Levi, and ornaments by Evelyn Garcia made from upcycled designer fabric scraps (the owls and Halloween ornaments in the store right now are super cute).
Kee-Ka Organics will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., from now until December 31 (with extended hours close to the holidays). And with the promo code POPUP2013, you can enjoy 10% off your purchase through October 31.
